Meyer Optik Görlitz releases redesigned Primoplan 75mm F1.9 II lens for a handful of mounts

01 Dec

Meyer Optik Görlitz, under its new parent company OPC Optics, is bringing yet another lens back to life — the Primoplan 75mm F1.9 II.

This fully-manual ‘legendary portrait lens’ is a revitalized version based on the original 1936 design by Meyer Optik designer, Paul Schäfter. Meyer Optik Görlitz says this redesigned version has been ‘carefully adapted it to the high standards of digital photography after an intensive development period,’ which included the support of Meyer Optik Görlitz engineer Dr. Wolf-Dieter Prenzel.

Meyer Optik Görlitz says the ‘Primoplan 75 f1.9 II is an enhancement of the Cooke triplet, in which a central dispersion lens is flanked by two groups of lenses, each acting as a converging lens.’ It adds, ‘the rear group consists of a single biconvex converging lens.’

A low-res sample photo, provided by Meyer Optik Görlitz.

The lens features an all-metal construction, is hand-assembled and each unit is calibrated and tested. Other features include an aperture range of F1.9 through F16, has 14-blade aperture diaphragm, has a minimum focusing distance of 75cm (2.45ft) and uses a 52mm front filter thread.

A low-res sample photo, provided by Meyer Optik Görlitz.

The lens is available today for Canon EF, Fuji X, Leica M, M42, MFT, Nikon F, Pentax K and Sony E mounts for €973.82 (approximately $ 1,155) on the Meyer Optik Görlitz online store.

Halide Mark II is a redesigned Raw camera app for iPhones with over 40 new and improved features

22 Oct

Lux Optics, the company behind the popular iOS camera app Halide, has announced the release of Halide Mark II, a second-generation camera app for iOS that’s the culmination of more than 18 months of work.

Halide Mark II is an entirely new app with a revamped interface designed from the ground up to make a more a user experience that is simple to use, but rich in professional-level features for those who want to get the most out of their iPhone photography.

Halide Mark II has the same exposure control and focus gestures as before, but has further refined the experience with additional interface elements. Now, when manually adjusting focus, a new Focus Loupe will appear in the center of the screen that zooms in to help ensure you get focus just where you want it. When you let go, the Focus Loupe will disappear and show the usual overlay so you can compose your shot.

The manual exposure controls, including ISO and shutter speed, have also been moved and are now accessible with a quick swipe from the right-hand side of the screen. The app keeps its interface minimal, but when tapping on an icon, a text description of the tool or setting you’re adjusting, as you can see in the below GIF:

With Halide 1.0, you were given the option to see both Color and Luminance histograms to ensure you achieved just the right exposure. Well, as with most things in Halide Mark II, both of these have been updated with option to make the overlays smaller on the screen. Also new is the ‘Color Zebras’ feature, which breaks down three separate color channels — red, blue and green — into individual waveforms with zebra stripes that will appear if certain colors are clipped in either the highlights or the shadows. This ensures that no matter what color the scene you’re composing is, you can ensure you’re not clipping the highlights or shadows for any three of these channels.

If you’re using the histogram, waveform or zebra tools while in fully-manual mode, where you adjust the ISO and shutter speed, things get even more powerful thanks to a new feature Lux Optics calls XDR Analysis. Rather than using the post-processed 8-bit data other camera apps do to display the waveform and histogram data, Halide Mark II uses the full 14-bit Raw data, in real time, to calculate the exposure. Although Lux Optics says it has a more in-depth post in the works on the technology behind XDR Analysis, it sums it up like this in its blog post:

’Consider that video of the Golden Gate Bridge from earlier. Your histogram, analyzing 8-bit data, might think the sky is clipped. If you saw that in your zebra stripes, you’d say, “It’s over exposed, I should go down turn things down a bit.” In fact, the cloud are not over exposed in the RAW, and there’s no need to turn down your exposure. By under exposing, you’re now going to lose details in the shadows!’

The redesigned image reviewer now shows more accurate metadata information and allows you to view both the Raw and JPEG/HEIC image with a toggle between the two buttons.

Halide Mark II also features ‘Coverage,’ a new capture mode that takes two photos — one with Smart HDR 2/3 and Deep Fusion, and one in RAW. This gives you the benefit of having a more robust Raw file to work with in an editor as well as an instantly sharable JPEG or HEIC file to share with family and friends. Also new is ‘Instant Raw,’ a feature within Halide Mark II’s image reviewer that uses a 17-step process powered by onboard machine learning to instantly create a sharable image from an iPhone Raw file.

If all of these new features, settings and modes seem confusing, don’t worry. To complement the new app is a built-in 10-day course that will not only show off the features of Halide Mark II, but also teach a number of photography concepts along the way through examples.

As Lux Optics explains at the conclusion of its introduction blog post, it’s decided to make Halide Mark II an entirely separate app from Halide 1.0; one that’s free-to-download with a one-week trial and two options for continuing to use the app after the one-week trial is up.

After spending time talking with current users of Halide, as well as beta testers of Halide Mark II, the Lux Optics team decided to offer both a one-time purchase option in addition to an annual subscription option, both prices of which were based on the suggestions of users. A one-time purchase, which will include all future updates and features, costs $ 30 at launch and will go up to $ 36 after the introductory offer. Subscriptions will start at $ 12/month with a limited $ 10/month introductory offer that will lock you in at $ 10 for the life of the app.

Users who have already purchased Halide 1.0 will get Halide Mark II for free and have a year’s membership comped to their account.

You can download Halide Mark II in the iOS App Store and find out more information on the Halide website. For a full run-down of all the new features and updates, check out Lux Optics’ thorough introduction blog post.

Fujifilm announces redesigned Fujinon XF 10-24mm F4 R OIS WR

17 Oct

$ (document).ready(function() { SampleGalleryV2({“containerId”:”embeddedSampleGallery_8923565060″,”galleryId”:”8923565060″,”isEmbeddedWidget”:true,”selectedImageIndex”:0,”isMobile”:false}) });

Fujifilm has announced the Fujinon XF 10-24mm F4 R OIS WR. Updating the older XF 10-24mm, the new lens keeps the optics unchanged, but adds weather-resistance, improved optical image stabilization and a physical aperture ring.

Covering an equivalent focal length range of 15-36mm in full-frame terms, the XF 10-24mm F4 R OIS WR is a high-quality wide-angle option for Fujifilm X-series shooters. Now featuring weather-resistance, the new lens should be a better companion for the similarly tough X-T4 and X-T3.

Despite the sealing, the new lens is very slightly lighter than its predecessor (by 25g / 0.9oz) and optical image stabilization has been improved by one stop, bringing the total stabilizing effect to a rated 3.5EV (CIPA). When combined with the in-camera IBIS system of the X-T4, total stabilization increases to 6.5EV.

The new lens will be available next month, for an MSRP of $ 999.95 USD.

Press release:

Fujifilm Introduces FUJINON XF10-24mmF4 R OIS WR lens

Newly updated, ultra-wide angle zoom lens features weather-resistance and more

Valhalla, N.Y., October 15, 2020 – FUJIFILM North America Corporation is pleased to announce the launch of the FUJINON XF10-24mmF4 R OIS WR Lens, the 36th interchangeable lens designed for Fujifilm’s X Series digital camera system. The lens, an update to the current FUJINON XF10-24mmF4 R OIS Lens, also features significant design and usability updates.

The new XF10-24mmF4 R OIS WR Lens is an ultra-wide zoom lens covering focal lengths from 10mm to 24mm (equivalent to 15mm – 36mm in the 35mm format). “XF10-24mmF4 R OIS WR packs many updated features including an f-stop scale on its aperture ring, an Auto-position lock, and a new weather-resistant design,” said Victor Ha, senior director of marketing and product development for FUJIFILM North America Corporation. “We’re confident that this lens will be a top choice among landscape and nature photographers who need an ultra-wide angle zoom lens designed to withstand the elements.”

Additionally, the internal structure has been redesigned to make the focus and zoom rings slimmer, giving the XF10-24mmF4 R OIS WR lens a lower overall weight than its predecessor by 25g (.88 oz). Also, Optical Image Stabilization has been extended in the new version by 1 stop, bringing the total stabilization effect of the new lens to 3.5 stops.
The new lens utilizes the same optical design from the original XF10-24mm OIS Lens to provide similar image-resolving performance and also has a maximum aperture of F4.0 across the zoom lens’ entire focal length range.

Main product features

A new, weather-resistant design and usability updates

  • Updated aperture ring with f-stop scale and Auto-position lock
The aperture ring of the new XF10-24mmF4 R OIS WR lens has been updated with an f- stop scale to allow photographers to visually check what aperture the lens is set to, eliminating the need to check through the camera’s EVF or LCD Display. The ring also features an Auto-position lock, similar to that found on Fujifilm’s GF lenses, which is designed to prevent unexpected aperture ring movements, and ultimately ensure the photographer’s shooting efficiency.
  • Added weather-resistance features
This new lens is both dust and moisture resistant, is able to operate in temperatures as low as 14°F (-10° C) and weighs 0.88 ounces (25 grams) less than the previous model, despite the addition of the weather resistant features.
  • Improved optical image stabilization
A new, sophisticated gyro sensor used in this lens improves image stabilization by 1.0 stop from the previous model, to 3.5 stops. When used with a new X Series camera, like FUJIFILM X-T4, the lens and camera work together to achieve approximately 6.5 stops of 5-axis image stabilization.

Optical design that delivers advanced image resolving performance

  • The new lens consists of 14 lens elements, including four aspherical elements and four extra-low dispersion elements, in 10 groups. The aspherical elements are designed to minimize spherical aberration, field curvature and distortion, while the extra-low dispersion elements are designed to correct chromatic aberration, delivering crisp, edge- to-edge sharpness. Despite its compact form factor, the lens can maintain the maximum aperture of F4.0 across its focal length range from the ultra-wideangle 10mm to wide- angle 24mm (equivalent to 15mm – 36mm in the 35mm format), while still allowing users to keep a constant f-stop value at any focal length.
  • The front lens element is carefully coated to minimize ghosting, which tends to occur with the extremely concave elements normally found on an ultra-wide angle zoom lens, to give a high level of image sharpness and clarity.
  • With a minimum working distance of just 24cm (9.5in), the lens is also suitable for macro-style photography. Use the lens to close in on a subject while also taking in the background at the same time, thereby creating powerful images that take maximum advantage of the available ultra-wideangle focal lengths.

Fast and near-silent autofocus (AF)

  • The use of lightweight focusing elements and a high-precision motor allows for fast and near-silent AF, even when using it with an X Series cameras’ Face / Eye AF functions.

Pricing and Availability

The new FUJINON XF10-24mmF4 R OIS Lens is expected to be available in the U.S. and Canada markets commencing November 2020. Pricing for the lens will be at a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $ 999.95 USD and $ 1,349.99 CAD.

Apple announces updated iPad and redesigned iPad Air, saves new iPhones for later date

16 Sep
The new iPad Air, seen attached to Apple’s Magic Keyboard.

Today, Apple announced the details of its latest iPad and iPad Air devices. While many had hoped Apple would also announce its next-generation iPhones at today’s virtual event, the Cupertino company didn’t have ‘one more thing’ in store.

Starting with the new 8th-generation iPad, Apple kept the update fairly straightforward. The new entry-level iPad, which starts at $ 329, now uses the A12 chip, a step up from the A10 found in its predecessor.

In addition to improved performance and battery life, this new chipset also means the iPad will feature Apple’s Neural Engine technology for the first time. Aside from the small internal update though, little was changed, as no external design changes were made.

The 8th-generation iPad is available in Space Gray, Silver and Gold. Pricing starts at $ 329 for the 32GB model.

The same can’t be said for Apple’s new iPad Airs though, which feature an entirely new design that clearly takes inspiration from Apple’s recent iPad Pro devices.

The new iPad Air devices now feature a 10.9” Liquid Retina edge-to-edge display and eschew the Touch ID button on the bottom of the front glass in exchange for a new Touch ID button integrated into the power button. The edges of the device have also been squared off, as has been seen with recent iPad Pro devices. The updated 2360x1640px display features P3 wide-gamut color, True Tone and a laminate coating. It does lack the 120Hz functionality of the display found on the iPad Pro devices though.

Performance has also been dramatically improved thanks to the new A14 Bionic processor, the first in the industry to use 5nm construction. Apple says the CPU is 40% faster than the previous-generation, while GPU performance has improved by 30%. An updated Neural engine also improves the machine learning performance of the device.

As for the built-in cameras, there’s a single 12MP rear camera and a 7MP FaceTime HD camera. Apple has also added USB-C to the iPad Air for the first time, which means it will be able to use various adapters and hubs, as well as support 20W charging and 5Gbps data transfers. Wi-Fi 6 is included and the cellular models will feature LTE that Apple claims is 60% faster. The new iPad Airs will work with Apple’s new Apple Pencil as well as the Apple Magic Keyboard.

The new iPad Airs come in five colors: Space Gray, Silver, Rose Gold, Green and Sky Blue. Pricing starts at $ 599 for the 64GB Wi-Fi model.

Tokina announces redesigned ATX-i 100mm F2.8 1:1 Macro lens for Canon EF, Nikon F mounts

15 Nov

Tokina has announced the release of its new ATX-i 100mm F2.8 Macro lens for full-frame Canon and Nikon DSLR cameras.

The ATX-i 100mm F2.8 Macro lens is constructed of nine elements in eight groups and features a 1:1 reproduction ratio at 30cm (11.8in) from the sensor with a minimum focusing distance of 11.5cm (4.5in). Tokina has used a ‘flat-field’ optical design which it claims ‘suppresses the field-of-view curvature to zero [for] excellent edge-to-edge sharpness at all focus distances and apertures.’

The lens uses Tokina’s One-Touch Focus Clutch Mechanism for quick switching between auto and manual focus by snapping the focus ring forward (for autofocus) or backward (for manual focus). The lens weighs 490g (17.28oz) and measures 9.5cm (3.74in) long and 7.3cm (2.87in) diameter.

Below are three sample photos captured with the lens and shared with us by Tokina:

Same great optics, brand new look – The atxi 100mm f/2.8 Macro FF lens for full-frame Canon and Nikon DSLR cameras

Huntington Beach, CA, November 15, 2019: Kenko Tokina, Japan’s leading manufacturer of premium camera accessories, is releasing the Tokina atx-i 100mm f2.8 Macro FF lens for full-frame DSLR cameras from Nikon and Canon. Distributed in the US exclusively by Kenko Tokina USA, this new lens provides unparalleled versatility with the award-winning optics.

The Tokina atx-i 100mm F2.8 FF Macro is a versatile mid-range auto-focus telephoto lens with excellent close focusing capabilities reaching life-sized (1:1) reproduction at 11.8 inches (30cm) from the sensor plane. Engineered for Canon EF and Nikon F mount full-frame DSLR cameras.

At (1:1) reproduction, the lens provides a very comfortable 4.5 inches of working distance between the front of the lens and your subject. The fast f/2.8 aperture makes it easy to focus in low light and renders soft beautiful bokeh. Making it an excellent choice for portraits, landscapes, video, and small world photography.

The Tokina atx-i 100mm F2.8 Macro is a “flat-field” optical design that suppresses the field-of-view curvature to zero. This means the lens yields excellent edge-to-edge sharpness at all focus distances and apertures. The lens’ multi-coatings render natural color with extremely low light falloff, perfectly controlled chromatic aberration, flare and ghosting.

The One-Touch Focus Clutch Mechanism makes switching from auto-focus to manual focus simple. While in AF mode the user only needs to snap the focus ring back toward the camera to engage “real” manual focus control. This gives photographers an authentic tactile MF feel with hard stops on either side of the focus range like traditional manual lenses. Additionally, the directional rotation of the focus ring matches the direction of proprietary Nikon and Canon lenses.

“This is the second lens offering in the new atx-i series.” says Yuji Matsumoto, President at Kenko Tokina USA. “It combines the award-winning optics of the original ATX model with a sleek new look that matches the cosmetics of today’s advanced DSLR cameras.”

Worldwide sales of the Tokina atx-i 100mm F2.8 FF Macro lens will begin on December 6, 2019 with authorized Tokina USA retailers taking pre-orders November 15, 2019.

Estimated USA Street Price of $ 429.00
