GoPro announces Hero10 Black with new chip, better performance and improved usability

Precisely one year ago, GoPro announced the Hero9 Black action camera. Today, GoPro has announced its successor, the Hero10 Black. While GoPro’s latest action camera looks familiar, a new GP2 chip inside results in significantly improved performance.

With its GP2 chip, the Hero10 Black features double the performance frame rates compared to 2020’s Hero9 Black. The increased processing power has other benefits. The Hero10 can upload a video to your phone or the cloud 30 percent faster than the Hero9. The Hero10 can plug directly into your smartphone for even faster uploads through GoPro’s Quik app, something not possible on the Hero9. The Hero9 introduced a front screen, although it was limited by poor framerate. Thanks to the GP2, the front display now runs at 30 frames per second despite being the same display.

Increased processing power gets more out of the 23.6MP image sensor. The Hero9 allowed users to pull 12MP still images from 4K 4:3 video. The Hero10 instead grabs 19.6MP stills from 5.3K 4:3 video. The Hero9 was limited to 5K 16:9 video, where the Hero10 records 5.3K 16:9 video, resulting in an additional megapixel when grabbing stills.

The GP2 chip helps with video framerates as well, which is perhaps the biggest boost offered by the increased processing power. The Hero10 Black records 5.3K/60p, 4K/120p and 2.7K/240p video. The Hero9 recorded 5K/30p, 4K/60p and FHD video at 240 frames per second.

Video is not only higher quality and faster, but it’s also more stable thanks to the inclusion of new HyperSmooth 4.0 stabilization software. The GoPro Hero10 includes three levels for its stabilization: off, standard, and boost. Boost results in cropping but promises the most stable footage possible. Standard doesn’t crop but won’t be quite as smooth as the boost setting.

The Hero10 uses the same batteries as the Hero9, but with higher-res video at faster frame rates, it does drain faster, per The Verge. During hands-on time, reviewer Becca Farsace investigated GoPro’s claims of improved tone mapping and noise reduction from the GP2 chip. Farsace found that low-light performance is improved.

While the GoPro Hero10 Black is available now for $ 499 ($ 399 with an annual GoPro subscription), some new features are being added on November 16, including Max lens mod support, additional resolutions, 24fps at all resolutions and GoPro’s SuperView lens at 5.3K at 30, 25 and 24fps. Samsung’s new Galaxy Flip 3, Galaxy Fold 3 promise better performance, durability and more

Samsung has announced a pair of new foldable smartphones, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 and the Galaxy Fold 3. The Flip 3 is a clamshell design, harkening back to a classic flip phone design. The Flip 3 is compact when not in use and gets taller when you flip it open. The Fold 3, on the other hand, has a more typical smartphone footprint, and then it unfolds like a book to offer a massive display. Let’s look at each of Samsung’s new folding phones in turn.

Samsung Z Galaxy Flip 3

When folded, the Flip 3 is 106.7mm (4.2″) diagonally. It’s nearly square and has rounded corners. It’s sleek. It’s also more usable than the prior iteration, thanks to a much larger cover screen. The cover screen is just under 50mm (1.9″) diagonally, although the viewable area is slightly less due to its rounded corners. The Super AMOLED display has a 260 x 512 resolution. It’s not a large display, but it’s large enough to allow users to see and interact with notifications and preview images taken with the dual rear camera.

Samsung Galaxy Flip 3

Speaking of selfies, due to the phone’s flip design, you can use what Samsung calls ‘flex mode’ to set up the phone, partially folded, to capture hands-free selfies. The dual rear cameras are both 12MP. The standard main camera has an F1.8 lens, includes optical image stabilization and can record HDR10+ video. The front camera is 10MP.

The main screen, which is usable when you flip the phone open, is a 6.7″ dynamic AMOLED 2X display with 2640 x 1080 resolution. The display has a 120 Hz refresh rate.

Samsung Galaxy Flip 3

The phone is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 Octa-core processor paired with 8GB of memory. The phone is available with 128GB or 256GB of storage. Unlike the Fold 3, the Flip 3 is not compatible with Samsung’s S Pen.

Samsung promises that durability issues that have plagued earlier Samsung foldables have been rectified. The Flip 3 features more durable materials. Samsung writes that its new Galaxy Z Flip 3 is built using its strongest aluminum frame yet and that the phone’s front and back covers feature Samsung’s toughest Galaxy Z glass. The Flip 3 is also the world’s first water-resistant foldable smartphone and includes an IPX8 rating, meaning it can survive in 1.5m of freshwater for up to 30 minutes.

Samsung Galaxy Flip 3

The Galaxy Flip 3 is Samsung’s first foldable phone to start at under $ 1,000, with a $ 999.99 list price. The phone Z Flip 3 is available in phantom black, green, lavender, cream, gray, white and pink colorways and will begin shipping on August 27.

The Galaxy Fold 3 has a more typical smartphone form factor…and then you open it up. When opened, the Fold 3 has a 7.6″ Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with 2208 x 1768 resolution. The display has a 120 Hz refresh rate. The cover screen is large, too, at 6.2″ with a resolution of 862 x 2268. By the way, unlike prior models, the cover screen is also 120 Hz.

Samsung Galaxy Fold 3

While the display is the star of the show, there’s quite a lot going on inside. The Fold 3 has the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 Octa-core processor as the Flip 3, although paired with 12GB of memory instead of 8GB. The Fold 3 also has a larger 512GB storage option in addition to the standard 256GB. Further, the Fold 3 is compatible with the Samsung S Pen.

The Fold 3 is compatible with the S Pen due to Samsung using an 80% stronger protective film on the folding display. The cover screen is stronger, too, using Gorilla Glass Victus now for improved drop protection. Speaking of durability, the Fold 3 has IPX8 water resistance, like the Flip 3, and like Samsung’s other new folding phone, the Fold 3 includes better aluminum materials.

Looking at cameras, both of Samsung’s new folding phones include a pair of 12MP wide (the main camera) and ultra wide cameras. The Fold 3 also adds a 12MP telephoto camera with an F2.4 lens. This is the same basic camera setup as in the Fold 2, but the new phone’s tele lens has optical image stabilization. There’s also a camera under the display. It’s only 4MP, but it should work well for video calls and meetings. In their hands-on, The Verge says the pixels on top of the camera are noticeable.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 is available for preorder now in three colors, black, green and silver. The device starts at $ 1,800 and will ship on August 27.

Fujifilm to improve X-T3 AF performance with new firmware, bringing it more in line with X-T4

In addition to announcing a camera, lens and more, Fujifilm has also revealed it will soon release a free firmware update for its X-T3 that will improve autofocus performance and more.

The firmware update will go live on October 28, according to Fujifilm’s press release. The improvements should see autofocus speeds more than double, taking focus times drop from 0.06 seconds to 0.02 seconds, bringing the X-T3’s autofocus performance more in line with the X-T4.

Fujifilm says it’s also improved the algorithm for predicting subject movements, which should result in a >90% ‘hit rate.’ The Face Tracking and Eye AF algorithm has also been re-written to double the tracking performance in continuous shooting modes.

Other improvements include the ability to use AF in low light levels down to -7EV with the new Fujinon XF 50mm F1.0 R WR lens, a new ‘Focus Limiter’ feature for setting pre-determined focus ranges, the ability to change the size of Single AF points while recording video and improvements that make it possible for third-party programs to read the ratings applied to pictures in-camera.

ACDSee Photo Studio Ultimate 2021 announced, promising faster performance and new features

ACD Systems International has launched ACDSee Photo Studio Ultimate 2021. This is the newest version of the company’s flagship photo editing software. The new version is focused on providing improved performance. ACD Systems International states that Photo Studio Ultimate 2021’s performance enhancements are up to 100 percent faster and RAW decoding is up to 20 percent faster.

Xiaomi introduces 3rd-gen under-display camera, promising unparalleled performance

As consumers demand increasingly sleeker smaller smartphones, manufacturers have been grappling with how to convincingly hide front-facing cameras. Solutions have included Apple’s now-ubiquitous notch design, a punch hole design and even cameras hidden underneath the phone’s display. Xiaomi hopes its newly announced third-generation under-display camera will be the best version of the lattermost approach yet.

Xiaomi’s first two generations of under-display camera tech never made their way into mass-produced devices. The latest generation, on the other hand, will be widely available in 2021.

Underpinning the new tech is a revised pixel arrangement solution. The screen allows light to pass through the gap between the sub pixels in the display. This allows each individual pixel to retain a complete red, green and blue (RGB) pixel layout. By utilizing the gap between sub pixels, the display doesn’t need to compromise with respect to pixel density.

Xiaomi states that ‘Compared with other common solutions on the market, Xiaomi has doubled the number of horizontal and vertical pixels, achieving the same pixel density above the camera as on the rest of the display area.’ Xiaomi continues, promising that the area above the camera will match the rest of the display in terms of brightness, color accuracy and color gamut.

There’s no question that the more seamless a front display, the better. However, it’s a considerable engineering challenge to produce a display with a hidden camera without sacrificing the quality of either the display or the camera it conceals. Thus far, hidden camera technology has not completely convinced discerning viewers, as discussed by Engadget with respect to similar tech from Oppo.

To showcase its latest generation, Xiaomi released an overview video, which you can view below.

As first pointed out by The Verge, if you look closely at the 0’29” mark of the above video, there appears to be a slight square shadow. In earlier portions of the video, you can see a very faint circle where the camera is located. Xiaomi assures that the camera will be invisible, so it’ll be interesting to see the final product when it ships next year.

While we must wait until 2021 to see Xiaomi’s third-gen camera out in the wild, we won’t have to wait long for a new smartphone with an under-display camera. ZTE will launch its ZTE Axon 20 smartphone next month. It’s unclear if this device will be available outside of China. Nonetheless, as is often the case, a race between firms to develop better technology will benefit end-users.

SD Express 8.0 announced, promising speeds up 4GB/s and improved performance

The SD Association (SDA) has announced the SD Express 8.0 (SD8.0) specification, promising up to transfer speed of up to 4GB/s (2GB/s per lane up to two lanes). The SD8.0 spec is built on the PCIe 4.0 standard and uses NVM Express (NVMe) technology.

It builds on the previous 7.0 specification that used PCIe 3.0, which powers the rival CFexpress format. The newest format can either deliver up to 2GB/s transfers with the PCIe 4.0 standard over a single lane using the familiar SD card format with two rows of pins (a combination denoted as PCIe G4L1 in the diagram below), or using PCIe 3.0 across two lanes (PCIe G3L2) which will add a third row of connection pins. The 4GB/s transfer speeds will be delivered by PCIe G4L2 cards using PCIe 4.0 transfer across two lanes (and three rows of pins).

The SDA, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, believes the new SD Express standard will create additional variety in the market and allows manufacturers to make the most of the increased speeds of SD Express to produce more storage choices for consumers. Additionally, the SDA states that SD 8.0 ‘may open even more opportunities for extra high-performance solutions using removable memory cards.’ Importantly, as with all SDA advancements, the SD 8.0 specification maintains backward compatibility across previous generations.

SD8.0 is arriving nearly two years after the SD 7.0 (SD7.0) spec was released in July 2018. The SD7.0 specification introduced PCIe 3.1 and NVMe architecture to SD cards. In February 2019, the SDA introduced the microSD Express 7.1 specification.

Notably, camera and card makers haven’t yet made use of the UHS-III format set out in the older SD6.0 specification. Memory card manufacturer Sandisk has already shown mockups of SD Express (SD7.0) cards, which raises the possibility that the industry will skip the UHS-III specification entirely.

An alternative memory card format, the CFexpress standard, has been increasing in adoption due to its impressive speeds and performance. CFexpress cards can utilize up to four lanes and currently can deliver 1GB/s speeds per lane. However, the current CFexpress 2.0 standard, announced in February 2019, promised comparable speeds using four PCIe 3.0 lanes to the ones that SD 8.0 will get from two v4.0 lanes

It will be interesting to see when CFExpress standards adopt a PCIe 4.0 interface, as the SDA and CFA continue to be in a memory card arms race. If history has proven anything, it’s that it will take some time before the new standards, and the accompanying performance increases, are commonplace in consumer products. However, the new SD8.0 spec lays impressive groundwork technology for faster cameras and improved workflows for photographers and videographers.

Blackjet’s CFexpress Type B and XQD card reader, 4-bay Cinema Dock offer Thunderbolt 3 performance

Blackjet has two relatively new storage peripherals: the new TX-4DS four-bay Cinema Dock with Thunderbolt 3 and the TX-1CXQ reader for CFexpress Type B and XQD cards. Both products offer rapid data transfer speeds up to 40Gb/s due to the inclusion of Thunderbolt 3, making them suitable for users who often shoot Ultra HD footage, manage data-heavy projects or who need to rapidly transfer large batches of images between drives.

The Blackjet TX-1CXQ Thunderbolt 3 hub features support for CFexpress Type B cards and Sony XQD / XQD 2.0 cards with ingest speeds up to 1600MB/s and 500MB/s, respectively. The hub is powered by the Thunderbolt 3 cable that connects the device to the user’s computer. The TX-1CXQ works with Windows 10 and macOS 10.12 and higher.

The model is priced at $ 199 but is listed on multiple online retailer websites as on backorder without clear availability or shipping dates at this time.

Joining the card reader is the Blackjet TX-4DS Thunderbolt 3 Cinema dock, which features four M.2 NVMe SSD enclosures, dual Thunderbolt 3 ports for daisy-chaining up to five Thunderbolt devices (displays, external drives, etc.), and optional reader modules for directly turning the inputs into CFast 2.0, XQD, SDXC, SSD, SxS and CFexpress card readers.

The TX-4DS features a built-in cooling fan and can be configured with RAID 0, RAID 1 and JBOD using the included software. The unit measures 120 x 145 x 155mm (4.7 x 5.7 x 6.1in); it is compatible with Windows 10 and macOS 10.12 or higher.

The enclosure is available from numerous retailers, including Amazon and Adorama, for $ 499.99—the price doesn’t include SSD drives, which are sold separately. You can find out more information on Blackjet’s website.

ON1 Photo RAW 2020.1 released, delivering improved user interface and better performance

ON1 has announced that the new version of ON1 Photo RAW 2020 is available now. ON1 Photo RAW 2020.1 includes new user interface updates, new features, performance enhancements, and new camera and lens support.

For photo editing improvements, ON1 Photo RAW 2020.1 includes improved highlight recovery. The software utilizes a new algorithm, which promises better recovery in highlight areas while maintaining more accurate hues. Further, ON1 Photo RAW 2020.1 now includes the ability to quickly edit a single image. You can drag the photo onto the application to edit a single image, with results saved non-destructively. A finished file is then ready to share without any fuss.

ON1 Photo RAW 2020.1 includes a new highlight recovery algorithm. The algorithm has been designed to deliver better highlight recovery with more natural colors.

If you enjoy using focus stacking techniques, ON1 Photo RAW 2020.1 includes a new focus stacking algorithm. The focus stacking tool also provides users with additional options to control the output.

The user interface has seen numerous improvements. There is a new and improved map view, which incorporates higher quality maps and improved search results. In the metadata pane in the new version of Photo RAW 2020, there is now a location tab and users can sync location metadata across multiple selected photos.

Inside the Browse section of the user interface, fast browse mode and cataloged folders mode now have their own tabs. There is also a new Copy to Catalog Folders option, which works like a quick import function to copy your photos from one location to another.

To help you find your images faster than ever before, ON1 Photo RAW 2020.1 has enhanced search features. There is now a simple search at the top of the Browse section. Users can now choose which cataloged folders to search as well, rather than searching all of them simultaneously.

Browsing large folders of images, such as hundreds or thousands of images from a single shoot, should be quicker in ON1 Photo RAW 2020.1. It is now faster to scroll through large groups of thumbnails images, rather than needing to wait for the thumbnails to appear on your screen.

Other speed improvements include a much simpler and quicker initial setup for first-time ON1 Photo RAW users. There’s also a new ‘getting started’ dialogue that guides new users through the process of finding images and making the first edit.

ON1 Photo RAW 2020.1 adds support for a number of new cameras and lenses. Newly supported cameras include the Fujifilm X-T4, Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark III, Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark III, Nikon D780, Nikon Z50, Canon EOS 1D X Mark III, Panasonic Lumix S1H, Sony A9 II and more. New lenses from Canon, Fujifilm, Leica, Meike, Minolta, Nikon, Panasonic, Sigma, Sony, Voigtlander and Zeiss are now supported as well. Blackmagic Camera Setup 6.8 improves start time and performance for 4K, 6K Pocket Cinema Cameras

Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K

Blackmagic has released an update for its Blackmagic Camera models that adds a number of new features, bug fixes and other improvements to the systems.

On both the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K (BMPCC4K) and Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K (BMPCC6K), Blackmagic Camera Setup 6.8 improves startup time, improves the USB PTP control performance and fixes an issue with ‘slow mounting of media containing a large number of clips.’

The update also increases 4K 2.40:1 recording pixel height from 1712 to 1720 pixels on the BMPCC4K and fixes an ‘issue where EF lens stabilization cannot be turned on if the camera is started with lens IS turned off’ on the BMPCC6K.

The update also includes Blackmagic RAW 1.6.1, which adds support for Blackmagic’s URSA Broadcast. Other ‘general performance and stability improvements have been made for Blackmagic’s RAW plugin for Avid Media Composer and Adobe Premiere Pro.

This software package allows you to update your Blackmagic Camera to the latest software release for new features, bug fixes and other enhancements.

The software installer no longer installs the Desktop Video or UltraScope applications and they will need to be downloaded separately from the Blackmagic Design website: https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/support

To use UltraScope via Thunderbolt with Blackmagic Cinema Camera or Production Camera 4K, download and install the Blackmagic UltraScope software. If you want to use Media Express with the supported cameras, download and install the Blackmagic Desktop Video software.

Please ensure that your device is plugged into mains power before running the software update. To update Blackmagic Camera Fiber Converter you will need to ensure that the unit is powered from the camera using the URSA 12V power supply rather than SMPTE fiber during the update.

For updating Blackmagic Cameras from Camera 4.0 or above it is advisable to export your presets and LUTs onto a card as they will be removed during this update.

Installing Blackmagic Camera Utility

Before installing the software, we recommend that you run “Uninstall Blackmagic Camera Setup” first.

While installing Camera Update on URSA Mini and URSA Mini Pro you may notice a pause around the 10% mark in the install process, this is normal and will continue installing after around 20 seconds.

While installing Camera Update on Pocket Cinema Camera 4K you may notice a pause around the 70% mark in the install process, this is normal. Please do not power off the camera as it may still be in the middle of the update process. When the update is completed, the camera will restart into its normal operating state.

After loading the software on the Blackmagic Cinema Camera PL, EF or MFT, you may notice a slight flickering on the built-in LCD screen. This is normal and expected behavior. The flickering will go away after a few minutes of operation.
