Photographer turns old computer parts into functional large format ‘Frankenstein’ camera

07 Aug

Iranian photographer Alireza Rostami has introduced the world to his ‘Frankenstein’ camera, a functional product handmade from old and broken computer components. According to Rostami, who recently spoke with DPReview, he purchased his first computer in 1999, a moment he said he’ll ‘never forget.’

Rostami explains that as he upgraded the computer over the years, he saved the older hardware, including the motherboard. ‘One day I thought, I can turn my old computer into a device that works again!’ Rostami said. ‘And I thought, well, why not make a camera?’

Rostami crunched the numbers and developed a design for his large format camera, which features a Linhof large format lens and film back, as well as a low-power battery that powers the camera’s computers fans, adding to the overall aesthetic. Rostami says his computer camera is suitable for landscape photography without adjusting the focus but can be readjusted for other uses by utilizing a universal lens ring and changing the lens.

Below is a video walkthrough of the camera, shared with DPReview by Rostami:

‘Unfortunately, I don’t have access to high-end technology,’ Rostami notes on Instagram, explaining that he’d like to make a different model that functions as both a computer and camera. Despite that, Rostami is pleased with the current version, saying, ‘I find the camera very exciting and beautiful, like something out of science fiction. I have a very unique camera now.’

The ‘Crapinon’ is a 135mm lens made from discarded parts

04 Apr

You know what they say about one man’s trash. Well, lens enthusiast and freelance video producer Mathieu Stern took the phrase to heart when he found an old lens tube at his local flea market. It was in a box of unsold items destined for the trash when he rescued it and gave it a new life. With the addition of an ND M42 to NEX adapter, M42 tubes and a couple of rubber bands, the ‘Crapinon 135mm’ was born.

$ (document).ready(function() { SampleGalleryV2({“containerId”:”embeddedSampleGallery_8949319656″,”galleryId”:”8949319656″,”isEmbeddedWidget”:true,”standalone”:false,”selectedImageIndex”:0,”startInCommentsView”:false,”isMobile”:false}) });

Stern admits that the lens isn’t too sharp, as you’d expect, but it does work. See some of his sample images above. You can see more of his work at his YouTube channel and his website.

Sony Digital Filter camera app merges parts of three images into one

19 Mar

Sony has announced the release of a new camera app called Digital Filter, giving photographers a way to merge parts from two or three different images into a single photo. It adds greater flexibility to a similar existing app called Sky HDR. Digital Filter is priced at $ 29.99 or $ 19.99 as an upgrade to Sky HDR.

Though they offer similar functionality, the biggest feature difference between Sky HDR and Digital Filter is that the new app supports merging sections of up to three different images, whereas Sky HDR only allows for two exposures. Sony merely states that, ‘The Digital Filter application offers functionality, ease of use and image quality that go beyond the features of Sky HDR.’

Digital Filter supports the following camera models:

  • Alpha a7
  • Alpha a7 II
  • Alpha a7R
  • Alpha a7R II
  • Alpha a7s
  • Alpha a7s II
  • Alpha a6000
  • Alpha a6300
  • Alpha a6500
  • RX100 III
  • RX100 IV
  • RX100 V
  • RX10 II
  • RX10 III
  • RX1R II

Sky HDR supports certain camera models Digital Filter doesn’t, including the a5100 and three NEX models.

Dynamic Architecture: 13 Buildings with Moving Parts

moving buildings villa girasole 2

Entire Italian villas spin in circles on wheels, solar-powered shades follow the sun, rooms zoom up into the air on telescopic stilts and windowless facades lift up on one end like shoebox mousetraps, all at the push of a button. These dynamic houses, apartment buildings, pavilions and offices have all sorts of moving parts, transforming as if of their own accord to change the views or keep the interiors cool.

Phalanstery Module

phalanstery module 3

phalanstery module 4

Envisioned as a house for zero-gravity, where all surfaces are treated equally, the Phalanstery Module rotates a full turn per hour, with one of the surfaces becoming parallel to the ground every fifteen minutes. Say the creators, “In the middle of every 7.5 minute conversation, two people are bound to collide. Architectural program and activities become overpowered by the instinctive interpretations of our bodies against measurable dimensions.”

At the push of a button, three wooden volumes tucked inside a main structure turn their glass-capped ends in various directions. The residents of the Sharifi-Ha House by next office i Tehran can choose whether they want these particular rooms to be shaded or illuminated by the sun, as well as the view they prefer. Rotated fully out of their containing spaces, they telescope out over the driveway.

Villa Girasole

Set on wheels and rails, northern Italy’s Villa Girasole rotates to follow the sun as it arches across the sky throughout the day, just like its namesake, the sunflower. Built in the 1930sby a wealthy engineer the two-story house rotates from a 42-meter-tall tower at the center, moving about 4 millimeters per second. It takes 9 hours and 20 minutes for it to rotate a full turn.

From afar, this house looks like a giant shoebox mouse trap, one end tilted up to reveal an elevated concrete slab. The windowless exterior moves up and down to either open the interior to the elements, or seal it off completely when the owners are gone. Designed by architect Javier Corvalan as the vacation home of a filmmaker, the house transforms with a manual winch. When closed, a pinhole allows the entire structure to function as a camera obscura, projecting an upside-down image of the landscape outside onto the interior walls.

Electronic Autopsy: 24 Sculptures Made of Computer Parts

29 Apr

[ By Steph in Art & Sculpture & Craft. ]

circuit art mandala 4

Art made of salvaged circuit boards and other computer parts put what is normally hidden on full display in a sort of autopsy of our consumerist society, highlighting how quickly the things we create become obsolete. Is our obsession with technology a sign of our achievements as a species, or a festering problem threatening to overtake the natural world? These artists are all working with unwanted components, but have different takes on the issue of electronic waste.

Computer Bugs by Julie Alice Chappell

CIRCUIT ART 1

Pesky metaphorical computer bugs are made literal when artist Julie Alice Chappell transforms reclaimed circuit boards from electronics into little winged insects. The project started when Chappell discovered a box of tiny electronic components at a ‘craft bank’ in Portsmouth, England, instantly seeing the bodies and legs of bugs. Chappell hopes her work will raise awareness about the problem of electronic waste.

Technological Mandalas by Leonardo Ulian

Circuitry and microchips come together into intricately arranged, perfectly symmetrical mandalas in the work of London-based artist Leonardo Ulian. “With the Technological Mandala series I combined the suggestive and spiritual meaning of the Indian Mandalas with something that has been perceived as far from that sphere of influence, technology,” says Ulian. “The search of perfection as necessity within the electronics industry has stimulated my curiosity to produce this series of pieces in order toe locate that specific need. I wanted to show what has been hidden from the eyes of the consumer, representing electronic circuits as extraordinary objects where the perfection of the design can become almost something ethereal.”

Ornate Rug Made from Computer Parts by Federico Uribe

You won’t be getting too comfortable on this particular rug by Federico Uribe, which consists of thousands of tiny, sharp electronic components. The mixed-media piece, which mimics the patterns on traditional Persian carpets, measures 22 by 12 feet. Uribe specializes in making art from unwanted ‘waste’ objects as well as everyday items found in the home.

Smart Bikes: Connected Parts Use GPS to Prevent Theft

15 Jan

[ By Steph in Design & Products & Packaging. ]

smart bikes 1

Never lose a bike to theft again with smart, GPS-connected parts that alert you when it’s moved without your permission. Two new bike accessories that can be swapped out with standard parts on virtually any bike not only track your bike’s location, but also provide turn-by-turn, eyes-free navigation so you can get to where you’re going without having to glance at your phone.

smart bikes 2

The first is smrtGRiPS by Boréal Bikes, a connected bike grip that offers haptic feedback notifications and can easily be installed within standard bicycle handlebars. Used in conjunction with an iOS or Android app, the grip will tell you when to turn using vibrations.

smart bikes 3

You can also get the bike to audibly ring if you have trouble finding it, and in case of theft, it’ll notify a crowd GPS network so that when another smrtGRiPS user comes within 100 feet of your missing bike, you’ll get the location. It’ll even have your phone call 911 automatically when a crash is detected.

smart bikes 4

Another product, the Connected Cycle Smart Pedal, alerts cyclists when their bike has been moved via a mobile app. The app will also help you track your cycling activity with detailed statistics about how far you’ve ridden over a selected period of time, which routes you take and how many calories you’ve burned. The pedal fits onto any standard bike and made its debut at CES 2015.

Exo-Prosthetics: Light, Cheap & Custom 3D-Printed Body Parts

09 Jan

[ By WebUrbanist in Conceptual & Futuristic & Technology. ]

3d bio printed leg

Lightweight, individualized and inexpensive, this design and manufacturing strategy bends artificial limbs in new directions and promises a more personalized product for those in need of a replacement (or upgrade).

3d custom titanium prosthesis

Developed by Adam Root, the process involves inverted laser scanning, 3D modeling and printing to generate form-fitting body parts that are comfortable, affordable and suited to a particular individual. The result is a “highly precise virtual model of the patient’s residual limb and matches its anatomy to within a fraction of a millimeter” which together with the “MIT biomechatronics lab-developed fitsocket captures leg tissue properties to enable a better fit.” Off-the-shelf parts round out these customized creations.

3d proesthetic pictures renderings

3d space frame mesh

A custom-patterned mesh model forms the basis for fabricating an exo-skeletal structure, held together with titanium dust particles that are laser-sintered into place for strength and durability. This technique obviates the need for cumbersome central supports by spreading the loads in a sort of three-dimensional ‘space frame’, to borrow an architectural term. The resulting aesthetic is not only personalized but compelling – stylistically, it leaves choices up to the user and gives a unique look to each individual creation.

3d scanned bio limb
3d stage two rendering

3d printed limb connections

3d modeled exo prosthetic

Gizmag puts these developments in context: “There are over 2 million amputees in the United States with 185,000 amputations every year. More than 90 percent of these involve amputations of the lower limbs. Traditional prostheses can be prohibitively expensive due to their complexity and the specialized labor required to customize them for each patient. They also have a very mechanical and robotic look and feel about them, which can exacerbate the sense of loss and negatively affect the psychological wellbeing of some amputees.”

Aviator’s Villa: Ultramodern House Made of Airplane Parts

15 May

[ By Steph in Architecture & Houses & Residential. ]

Aviator House 1

A long, narrow ultramodern residence envisioned as a composition of disassembled aviation components offers an evocative home for a retired pilot. ‘Aviator’s Villa’ by Urban Office Architecture is elevated on a hill between a lake and a swimming pool, and exposed on three sides so it feels like it’s floating on air.

Aviator House 2

The cantilevered master bedroom juts out from the main volume of the home like the nose of an airplane, hovering over other ‘floating’ volumes conceived as abstracted clouds. You might expect a smoother silhouette from a plane-inspired structure, but the architects deliberately gave it a “twist and torque” to simulate the way a plane steers through air currents.

Aviator House 3

Aviation House

The house consists of three primary spaces including a thirty-foot-tall living area and kitchen, the 40-foot bedroom, and the library. Between the two separate structures are a series of hidden spaces revealed during the ascent up a circular staircase.

Aviator House 4

Throughout the villa, little details echo those found within a plane, like the riveted metal frames around the windows, and perforated metal screens  that filter harsh direct sunlight the way clouds do in the sky. The sharp, geometric panes of glass that make up the windows are meant to recall the angles found within a cockpit.

A wooden seat that needs to wood, glue or screws, but focusing on traditional construction techniques, this design is about the craft-oriented journeyman and not a comfort-driven destination.

Jorge Penadés of Spain emphasizes the act of construction and deconstruction with his Nomadic Chair, which slots together and back apart in two minutes. It utilizes bright metal connectors and tucks away into a simple leather sling for travel.

In both seating and backpack form it is built to stand out from the crowd. Critics will no doubt point out that it is not the most comfortable item to carry or even to sit in, but its assembly involves joinery methods that stress the process over the product. Someone looking for a camping chair is probably still best off buying one made of lightweight aluminum and seat-friendly fabric.
