Ricoh releases SDK for Pentax cameras, opening the door to 3rd party remote control apps

17 May

Ricoh has released a software development kit (SDK) for Pentax cameras that allows third-party developers to create mobile and desktop apps that can control the camera remotely via USB cable or Wi-Fi.

The wireless package is available for Android and iOS. The USB-version can be downloaded for Microsoft .NET Framework and for C++ (Linux, Windows or MacOS). Both variants offer functions for controlling Pentax’s DSLRs and medium format cameras remotely, including photo and video capture, live view and adjustment of camera settings.

The SDK should allow for straightforward development of sophisticated remote control apps and other, more specialized, camera software, without any need for reverse engineering.

Free downloads and comprehensive documentation are available on Ricoh’s dedicated API website.

Reuters photographers banned from Olympic opening ceremony over leaked photos

31 Jan

Reuters is in hot water with the IOC and PyeongChang Winter Olympics organizing committee after the news agency broadcast several images of the olympic cauldron being lit during an opening ceremony rehearsal this past weekend. The lapse—highly uncharacteristic for a major news agency with decades of experience respecting image embargoes—has gotten Reuters banned from covering the Opening Ceremony.

The news broke through the Yonhap News Agency, who is reporting that Reuters pulled the photos after the IOC and PyeongChang organizers complained.

However, as the damage had already been done, the IOC has decided to punish Reuters all the same, revoking the agency’s media accreditation for the Opening Ceremony on Friday, February 9th. Furthermore, the Reuters photographer who took the leaked photos has been banned from covering the games altogether.

The PyeongChang organizing committee wants to make it clear that violating Olympic media embargoes is being taken very seriously, telling Yonhap that it will “enforce strong penalties on media companies and their reporters who disobey embargoes of the opening and closing ceremonies.”

Manfrotto launches secure backpack with concealed rear opening

11 May

$ (document).ready(function() { SampleGalleryV2({“containerId”:”embeddedSampleGallery_8063110177″,”galleryId”:”8063110177″,”isEmbeddedWidget”:true,”standalone”:false,”selectedImageIndex”:0,”startInCommentsView”:false,”isMobile”:false}) });

Accessory manufacturer Manfrotto has launched a new backpack that hides the opening of its main camera compartment between the bag and the person carrying it. The Advanced Rear backpack’s main compartment zipper is between the shoulder straps on the back side of the bag, so that when it is being carried no one can open it from behind.

Manfrotto says that the lower part of the bag is big enough for a professional DSLR along with three wide aperture zooms as well as accessories such as flash units. The camera compartment in this lower section is removable and comes with its own zipped cover so items can be stored when the rest of the bag is being used for something else.  The top section can be used for more accessories or personal belongings.

An additional pocket is suitable for a 13in laptop, a tablet and documents up to A4 in size. A tripod can be attached via the tripod pocket, and a cover is built-in to protect against rain and dust. The company says that the pack is a suitable size to carry as hand luggage on most airlines.

The Manfrotto Advanced Rear backpack costs $ 159.99/£119.95. For more information visit the Manfrotto website.

Press release:

MANFROTTO PRESENTS: Manfrotto Advanced Rear Backpack

Manfrotto, world leader in the photography, imaging equipment and accessories industry, announces the launch of the new Manfrotto Advanced Rear Backpack.
The Advanced Rear Backpack can be used as a camera backpack, a laptop backpack, or just as a protective camera case.

Protective for photographers
Featuring the Manfrotto Protection System, the lower part of the bag is dedicated to holding photographic equipment, and will safely hold a professional DSLR camera body with up to 3 lenses. The zip for the camera compartment is hidden on the back of the bag, giving maximum security to your equipment. The camera compartment is completely removable, meaning the bag can be transformed into a spacious daypack.

Practical for travellers
The new Manfrotto Advanced Rear Backpack features plenty of space for personal belongings when you are travelling. The front pocket can store a 13” laptop, A4 documents, 10” tablet and small book and can be opened separately without affecting your camera equipment. The side pocket is suitable for a notebook and water bottle and the upper compartment can contain other documents and personal items. The zips can also be locked for further security.

The bag comes with a dedicated tripod compartment, a side pocket perfect for a small tripod and a branded rain cover to keep equipment protected in all weather conditions.

World’s Longest Tunnel Slide Opening at Sculptural London Monument

30 Apr

[ By Steph in Destinations & Sights & Travel. ]

arcelormittal slide main

Experience monumental sculpture like you never have before with a new 15-story tunnel slide that spirals around London’s ArcelorMittal Orbit monument, set to be the world’s longest. The UK is really pushing its public art to the next level by adding a record breaker to a record breaker, as the sculpture already holds the title of tallest in the nation. The slide wraps around the sculpture 12 times, and it takes forty seconds to get from the very top to the bottom in a trip through the tube.

Opening to the public on June 24th, 2016, the Carsten Höller-designed slide features both opaque and transparent sections so riders get brief glimpses of the London skyline before plunging back into darkness. A tight corkscrew section snakes its way around the red geometric structure, ending in a straight run to the ground. The slide’s total length is 584 feet.

London erected the strange and rather controversial ArcelorMittal for the 2012 Summer Olympics, offering panoramic views of the city from its location in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. Tickets for the attraction are already on sale for £15 ($ 22), with a limited number available each day, and you can book more than one ride at a time.

Opening 2015 Paddling Season on the South Platte River

08 Mar
winter paddling on South Platte River

Paddling Sea Wind canoe upstream of the South Platte River above Masters

March 6, 2015. Finally, I started my 2015 paddling season on the South Platte River. I took Sea Wind canoe to Masters (about 28 miles east of Greeley on highway 34) and paddled 2.5 miles upstream and back: easy workout, a short photo session, watching bald eagles and deer.

Masters offers a typical bridge access to the river with a barbed wire fence and wide shoulder parking. It is similar to Kuner access, perhaps a little easier and shorter. There is a diversion dam just above the bridge. It was open and easy to paddle in both directions. Several diversion dams below Kuner can be open and runnable, at least in winter. River flow was much lower (~650cfs) than at Kersey (~1000cfs), but I still had plenty of water to paddle.

Riverside Park at Evans. The main park access from 37th Street remains closed, but the park was partially open in September 2014. Here is information from City of Evans webpage:

On September 13, 2013, Colorado experienced widespread flood destruction from what the media referred to as “biblical” rains. Riverside Park was completely destroyed in that flood.
One year after the flood, on September 13, 2014, the City was able to proudly open a section of the park accessible from 42nd Street. The 7-acre Riverside Lake was opened for fishing and a portion of the trail around the lake was opened as well.

It would be worth to check if there is an easy access to the river from the reopened part of the park. Last year, I was looking for an alternative river access at Evans. There is a possibility to launch boats under the highway 85 bridge (the end of the frontage road on left shore where a bike trail starts).

Opening 2014 Paddling Season on the South Platte River

27 Jan

January 21, 2014. Finally, I started my paddling season for the year 2014. I took the Sea Wind canoe to Kersey and paddled upstream to the confluence with the Poudre River and back. It was my first paddling on the South Platte after last year flooding. There are a lot of signs of that flooding on shores, but the river remains the same – wide open without any new obstacles.

The river flow was ~950cfs at Kersey. There is a new station near Greeley – PLAGRECO. I don’t know its exact location yet, but it may be pretty useful for planning paddling trips since it shows the river flow not affected by subtraction and addition of water between Greeley and Kersey (2 diversion dams and the Poudre River).

I will be doing more training runs at different locations on the South Platte during winter time if anybody would like to join me. Most of the time I will paddle the Sea Wind canoe which is my first choice boat for this year Missouri River 340 race. I am hoping also for some downriver SUP runs. You can expect updates to my South Platte River guide.

Last week North Korea started to allow foreigners to use a 3G mobile network from inside its borders. This means that tourists and visiting professionals alike can now tweet and upload instagrams from Pyongyang. However, access to mobile networks is still limited for locals. Two of the most notable Instagrammers in North Korea are Associated Press journalists Jean Lee and David Guttenfelder. Since the change, the journalists have used their accounts to present life inside North Korea. Click through to see their images.
