Hyperloop Hotel: Zoom from City to City in a Luxury Lodging Pod

22 Jun

[ By SA Rogers in Drawing & Digital. ]

Hyperloop transit is about to make the world a whole lot smaller, and with it could come a system of luxurious private pods outfitted like high-end hotel rooms so you can zoom from one city to the next in unprecedented comfort. While it might seem like there’s little need for such cush train cars when your trip takes less time than ever, the Hyperloop Hotel aims to solve the problem of where you’re going to stay while traveling.

Developed by Radical Innovation Award winner Brendan Siebrecht, the Hyperloop Hotel consists of shipping containers that double as traveling guest suites, able to ‘dock’ themselves at any of 13 different hotel stations in cities like Seattle, Portland, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Austin and New York City. While the nightly fee hasn’t been set yet, Siebrecht reveals that for a fee of $ 1,200, guests can even visit multiple cities in a single day. That’s right, you could maintain a comfy home base while having breakfast on the East Coast, lunch in the South and dinner on the West Coast.

It might sound too futuristic to be real, but Hyperloop One is already being tested in Las Vegas and could be carrying passengers by the year 2020, so it’s actually not that far away, assuming the technology stays on track (pun intended.) But the hotels definitely wouldn’t come cheap – it would cost about $ 10 million to build each one. The pods themselves feature a bedroom, office, bathroom and living room, with a glazed wall that can be covered while you’re in motion.

“I believe the Hyperloop One is the next big innovation in transportation in the United States and possibly the world,” Siebrecht told Business Insider. “I wanted to explore ways in which this technology could transform the overall travel experience and hospitality.”

The Vertu Constellation is a luxury smartphone with high-end specs, for a change

26 Jan

Vertu is company known for its “handmade in England” luxury smartphones and eye-watering price tags. However, while many Vertu devices easily set you back as much as a decent used car, the specifications tend to be in line with mid-range rather than high-end models.

However, the latest incarnation of the Vertu Constellation, announced today, changes things up. It comes with actual high-end specifications and dual-SIM capability as an added bonus. The  5.5″ QHD AMOLED display is protected by scratch-proof sapphire glass and the Android 6 operating system is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chipset and 4GB of RAM. Also on board are 128GB of expandable storage, NFC, a USB Type-C port, and a 3,220 mAh battery. Front-facing stereo speakers with Dolby Digital Plus virtual surround sound processing should provide a good sound experience and all the components have been wrapped up in a hand-crafted shell made from anodized aluminum and finished with leather, ‘sourced from a specialist, family-run tannery in Italy.’

In the camera department the Constellation offers a 12 MP rear camera with 1.55um pixel size which equates to a 1/2.3 sensor. Video recording at 4K is supported but there is no talk of optical image stabilization. No pricing information for the device has been released yet but it’s safe to assume it will be a four-figure US$ number. In case you’re still not sure if this kind of price tag is justified, you should consider Vertu’s 24-hour concierge service is included. On the Constellation it is accessed by pressing a ruby button on the side of the phone. You also get access to iPass, the world’s largest Wi-Fi network. If you want to take your mobile image in style you won’t have to wait too long. The Constellation will be available from February. You can register your interest now on the Vertu website.

Hawkesmill England, a maker of luxury camera bags and accessories, has launched its new line of smaller bags designed to be used with mirrorless cameras, or smaller DSLRs with an attached lens. Like Hawkesmill’s larger models the new line comes with a removable camera insert and a rear sleeve for memory cards, documents and other smaller items and valuables.

The bags come in various styles and are made from premium materials, such as Scottish Harris Tweed and triple-layered waterproof canvas. A dual D-ring closing system allows for quick access to your gear while holding it safely. It also lets you slightly expand the bag’s capacity when some extra space is needed. All models of the new line come with the same overall dimensions of 10 x 8 x 5in (25.4 x 20.3 x 12.7cm). However, weight varies slightly between 2.5lb and 3.5lb (1.13kg to 1.58kg).

All canvas models of the small bag are available now for £329 (approximately $ 420), the Regent Street model, which is made from leather, will set you back £469 (approximately $ 595). All Hawkesmill bags are handmade in England and come with a lifetime warranty.

Press Release:

Hawkesmill England Launches New Small Range of Luxury Camera Bags

West Sussex, England (December 5th 2016) – Today, Hawkesmill England, one of the leading high-end camera accessories brands, announced it is rolling out a line of smaller luxury camera bags. Currently, Hawkesmill makes a stylish large camera messenger bag, suitable for needed gear and a 15” MacBook Pro. These new bags are designed to be used with smaller cameras, i.e., mirrorless, Leica, or a DSLR and single lens attached.

Hawkesmill utilizes superbly luxurious materials, such as Scottish Harris Tweed and triple-layered waterproof canvas, while the firm’s innovative dual-d ring closure and trigger hook system ensures that all of the gear it holds is safe and secure, while also being quick to access. A second d-ring acts as an overflow ring, for those occasions when a little too much has been packed.

Similar to the large bags, the small line also includes a removable insert that is replaceable, ensuring a lifetime of use, as well as a rear sleeve that keeps valuables, such as passports, tickets, memory cards and money, against your body and safe.

There are five models currently available: the classic all-black Bond Street; the olive Jermyn Street, sporting a traditional Harris Tweed design; the distinctive 18oz canvas Marlborough with English vegetable tanned leather; the black body with charcoal Harris Tweed flap Sloane Street; and, in a first for camera bags, the Regent Street, an all-Horween Chromexcel version, known as one of the finest leathers in the world.

The overall dimensions of each of the new Hawkesmill bags are 10? wide x 8? high x 5? deep (25.4cm x 20.3cm x 12.7cm), while the weight varies slightly by model, from 2.5lbs to 3.5lbs (1.13kg to 1.58kg).

All of the small canvas bags sell for £329.00, while the small leather Regent Street is £469.00. Along with the large bags, these are all handmade in England with a lifetime warranty against defects.

The company also makes luxurious leather camera neck straps, card holders and passport holders.

Rugged Luxury: Take Your Queen Bed On the Road In This Modern Camper

08 Nov

[ By SA Rogers in Technology & Vehicles & Mods. ]

tvan-mk4-trailer-main

If your camping style is somewhere in between sleeping under the stars and ‘glamping’ with all the comforts of home, Track Trailer’s MK4 ‘Tvan’ camper has your number. Designed to be towed behind standard trucks and SUVs, it’s basically a hotel room on wheels, packing a queen-sized bed, two kitchen configurations, air conditioning and a quick-erect tent to multiply the available space.

tvan-trailer-3

tvan-trailer-7

The latest in a series of Tvan designs, this camper trailer enables the most rugged of adventurers to go deep into the wilderness, and it’s gotten a thumbs-up from explorers of Australia’s most punishing desert landscapes. The Tvan is manufactured in Melbourne and has been around since the early ’80s, and features MC2 suspension, a riveted steel and aluminum cabin body, hot-dipped galvanized chassis, and a rear folding platform for the tent, which stows away in its own compartment.

tvan-trailer-4

tvan-trailer-5

tvan-trailer-6

The slide-out kitchen offers a surprising number of features, including four burners, a sink, counter space and three storage drawers, and it all packs up tight for travel, remaining secure even when you’re driving over rocky terrain. There’s an integrated windshield that deploys simply by raising it into position so windy conditions don’t blow out the flames on the range.

tvan-trailer-2

The cabin itself is substantial enough to block out noise, sun, heat, cold and wind, and when the tent is in use, it secures to the hard fold-out floor, keeping it up off the ground. The rear hatch is assisted by gas struts to make it easy to open and close, and the whole thing is aerodynamic, making it easy to tow.

Well Wheeled: 12 Luxury Bike Accessories for the Discerning Cyclist

18 Oct

[ By SA Rogers in Design & Products & Packaging. ]

bike-life-velo-sock-2

Ride your bike in style with crocheted skirt guards, leather beer carriers, hand-carved saddles and picnic sets that cost more than your car. These luxurious bicycle accessories will make sure you’re ready for drinks at the park or a fashion shoot with Vogue while also outfitted in top-of-the-line practical gear worthy of even the most serious cyclists.

DIY Built-In Bike Bar

bike-life-built-in-bar

This DIY mini bar is built right into the unused section of a bike’s frame, packed full of coasters, cups, bar tools and mixers with a lid that folds down to become a tiny triangular table. It’s a pretty clever idea for picnics – just don’t drink and bike. Want one of your own? You’ll have to make it yourself, since it’s so particular to the individual shape of your bicycle.

Leather Growler & Six Pack Carriers

bike-life-six-pack

growler-carrier

If beer is more your (bike) speed, there are options for that, too – like a fancy lather carrier that holds either a six-pack or an entire growler and mounts to your saddle or frame. The full-grain leather growler coozie by Cicada Leather Company fits most 64-ounce glass growlers, and Walnut Studio’s ‘Bicycle Beer Combo’ comes with a ‘frame cinch’ design, which can be used to carry anything with a handle on the top tube of your bike.

Crocheted Skirt Guard

bike-life-skirt-guard

Why sacrifice your fashion sense while biking? Not only does this crocheted add-on make your bike look fancy, it enables you to wear skirts and dresses without worrying about them getting caught in your spokes. Made by Knits for Life, it comes in two sizes and snaps onto the fender with included clips.

World’s Most Expensive Bicycle Saddle

If you can’t afford the whole Fendi shebang, but still want to drop a giant wad of cash on your ride, replace your saddle with one of three designs by Crown Saddles – the Graf Ludwig, the Konig Friedrich or the Herzog Eberhart. The priciest saddles in the world, with the Herzog boasting a price tag of €1554 Euros (around $ 1700 USD), the saddles are made of lightweight carbon fiber and Kevlar Rowling with airbrush finishing.

Leica and ONA introduce more luxury bags for the red-dot-obsessed

15 Oct

$ (document).ready(function() { SampleGalleryV2({“containerId”:”embeddedSampleGallery_7420218348″,”galleryId”:”7420218348″,”isEmbeddedWidget”:true,”standalone”:false,”selectedImageIndex”:0,”startInCommentsView”:false,”isMobile”:false}) });

Leica and bag-maker ONA Bags have teamed up again, this time to launch a new premium lineup of exclusive camera bags called the ‘ONA for Leica’ collection. This new lineup is composed of half a dozen camera bags that will be available solely through Leica Camera AG, each of them featuring a red rivet and red lining, as well as space for Leica camera gear and, in some cases, other accessories and personal items as well.

The new collection is composed of ‘The Bowery for Leica’ bag, ‘The Prince Street for Leica,’ ‘The Brixton for Leica,’ ‘The Berlin II for Leica,’ ‘The Camps Bay for Leica,’ and ‘The Roma for Leica.’ Though they all share a similar style, each bag is unique in its offerings, and some are available in multiple versions. There are five versions of ‘The Brixton,’ for example, while some of the others bags — particularly ‘The Camps Bay’ and ‘The Roma’ — are larger and more practical with less design variations. Both waxed Italian leather and waterproof canvas bags are offered in the collection.

ONA’s website currently only lists the The Bowery for Leica bag, which is $ 279. Pricing for the other bags in this collection isn’t clear at this time. Availability is set for November.

PRESS RELEASE

Leica Camera and ONA present an exclusive collection of high-quality, premium camera bags

13 October 2016: Leica Camera has today announced the ‘ONA FOR LEICA’ collection of high quality camera bags.

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the legendary 35mm camera in 2014, ONA – an American manufacturer of premium camera bags – created ‘The Berlin II’, a bag designed especially for the Leica M-System. As a follow-up to this collaboration, the two companies have once again joined together to present the ‘ONA FOR LEICA’ collection, featuring six distinctive models crafted by ONA. Each piece will be lined in red and will feature a red rivet, as a discreet reference to Leica. The series will be offered exclusively by Leica Camera AG in a range of materials and colour combinations.

The Bowery for Leica: This special edition of ‘The Bowery for Leica’ camera bag represents a mutual commitment to the creation of exceptional products for photographers from both ONA and Leica. The bag is specially designed to provide stylish and practical protection for Leica camera equipment. Two of the five models are crafted from finest quality Italian leather with a lightly waxed finish. The remaining three models are made from a robust and waterproof canvas fabric. With five compartments, it offers enough space for a Leica M-Camera, one to two M-Lenses and various personal possessions or accessories. By detaching the carrying strap, the bag turns into a useful, padded insert for safely stowing camera equipment in a larger bag or case. Its cleverly designed features, variable storage options, compact size and minimalist design make it the perfect universal and modern camera bag.

The Prince Street for Leica: Combining the look of a casual shoulder bag with the practical advantages of a camera bag, ‘The Prince Street for Leica’ offers a unique messenger style. Two models in finest leather and three in robust canvas with real leather trim offer generous capacity for photographic equipment. The two retro-styled clip-buckles ensure that the bag’s valuable contents are safely locked away. Six compartments allow an M-Camera with two to three lenses, an 11-inch laptop or tablet PC and other accessories to be safely and unobtrusively stowed away.

The Brixton for Leica: This sophisticated bag has been designed to be particularly spacious, and is available in five different versions. The ‘Antique Cognac’ and ‘Dark Brown’ models are created from the finest Italian leather, with a wax finish. The water-repellent waxed canvas of the other three bags in the collection keeps cameras and equipment safely protected. All five hand-crafted models offer multiple practical features, numerous outer pockets and compartments and flexible storage space with room for a camera, two to three lenses, small personal items and even a 13-inch laptop computer. The bags are available in water-repellent canvas in the colours ‘Black’, ‘Field Tan’ and ‘Smoke’ (water-repellent canvas) and in real leather in ‘Antique Cognac’ and ‘Dark Truffle’.

The Berlin II for Leica: This exclusive bag is hand-made from finest Italian leather in the colours ‘Black’ or ‘Vintage Bourbon’ and has been specifically designed for the Leica M-System. The premium leather style offers space for one camera, two to three lenses and small accessories, and develops a unique patina during years of use that reflects its truly unique character. Additional storage space inside the bag makes it particularly flexible. Lined in iconic Leica red, four dividers can be used to adapt the space to meet specific needs and can be completely removed, if required. The Berlin II, available in a choice of ‘Black’ or ‘Vintage Bourbon’ leather, offers space for documents in a compartment on the back and features a front pocket with a zip-fastener for storing small personal items.

The Camps Bay for Leica: This stylish, high-capacity rucksack in water-repellent canvas and real leather appliqués is perfect for transporting a wide range of camera equipment, comfortably and flexibly. The space inside can be adapted to meet the needs of the owner’s individual products or to make room for additional accessories. The padded main compartment provides space for the safe storage of one camera with up to seven lenses and a 17-inch laptop computer, while smaller items can be secured away in a pocket with a zip-fastener on the front. Both the straps and the back of this ‘Smoke’ coloured canvas rucksack are padded and covered with breathable fabric, to ensure complete comfort when on the move.

The Roma for Leica: This practical insert with five compartments transforms almost any standard bag into a camera bag. The robust, water-repellent canvas material offers optimum protection for valuable equipment and features real leather grips to make it easier to remove from bags. This cleverly-designed combination of bag and organiser is the ideal solution for photographers looking for a smart way to carry a single camera, one lens and a couple of small accessories.

Minimal Luxury: Monumental Concrete Hotel by Tadao Ando

24 May

[ By SA Rogers in Boutique & Art Hotels & Travel. ]

setouchi aonagi 6

Master of minimalist architecture Tadao Ando has remodeled a small boutique hotel on Japan’s Shikoku island in a refreshingly spare yet luxurious aesthetic, with few distractions to break up his trademark expanses of concrete and glass. The seven-room Setouchi Aonagi perches on a mountain overlook gazing out onto the glassy surface of the Seto Inland Sea, its narrow rooftop swimming pool extending in the opposite direction like a telescope to focus on the distant skyline.

setouchi aonagi 1 setouchi aonagi 2

setouchi aonagi 4

setouchi aonagi 13

In recent years, the Setouchi International Art Festival has brought tourists and press from around the world into this quiet corner of Japan, with the central venues all shining examples of Ando’s work, so it was only natural for the Setouchi Aonagi to ‘join the lineup’ as another architectural masterpiece. The building previously functioned as an art museum and private residence, and was outfitted with interior furnishings the architect deemed unnecessary. His transformation strips away all distractions, giving each spacious suite its own subtle theme.

In addition to the cinematic rooftop pool, there’s an indoor pool dubbed ‘The Cave’ that can be reserved for private use. The hotel notes that the ‘luminous light’ that pours into the building, as well as the view of the sea, are art in and of themselves – but that a selection of minimal contemporary art is also on hand, sparingly displayed to keep the focus on the architecture and surroundings. One example is a mossy garden installation by Yutaka Ono, mimicking the look of the islands when seen from afar.

The rooms range from about $ 820 per night for the Garden Suite on the bottom floor to $ 1450 for the Aonagi Suite, which might sound a bit steep until you consider the general cost of travel in Japan and the fact that each room sleeps 3 to 5 guests.  Plus, staying in a Tadao Ando creation is a once-in-a-lifetime kind of experience, after all.

Creature Comforts: ARK Luxury Terminal for Animal Passengers

30 Jul

[ By WebUrbanist in Architecture & Offices & Commercial. ]

ark daycare facility

Swimming pools, private suites, flat-screen televisions, medical facilities and luxury lounges – all these amenities cannot be yours, but can be enjoyed by your pets (or pigs or horses) at the new AFK airport terminal just for animals.

ark pet car

Opening next year alongside JFK international airport, over 70,000 animals of all kinds are expected to pass through ARK annually. This 50,000,000-dollar, 178,000-square-foot space will be the “world’s only privately owned animal terminal and USDA-approved, full-service, 24-hour, airport quarantine facility for import and export of horses, pets, birds and livestock.”

ark livestock horse travel

Your best (canine) friend can enjoy more comforts than you can imagine, including pawdicures, massage therapy and even a swimming pool shaped like a dog bone, while you close feline companion climbs through dedicated jungle gyms or cat TV. Horses will enjoy food, water and rest while basking in daylit stalls that can be individually climate-controlled. You can also watch (and envy) your critters, large or small, via remote webcams on demand.

ark horse stalls individual

All animals have access to a veterinary hospital equipped for general health, emergency care, advanced diagnostics and with surgery suites, providing healthcare but also helping to streamline checks and certifications required for overseas travel.

ark horse transport

The ARK will replace VetPort, a small 10,000-square-foot onsite facility (effectively a glorified kennel) with meager amenities that still requires a separate offsite quarantine system located miles away.

ark animal airport terminal

If this sounds like a luxury affair from a front-of-house perspective, consider all of the work architecture firm Gensler has put in to make the place function, like cleaning up 5,000 pounds of waste produced by up to 180 head of cattle per day. Clever architectural solutions are needed to deal with the sheer volume of animals passing through as well as their species-specific needs.
