Peak Design unveils redesigned ‘Greatest Hits’: All new Clip, Slide and Slide Lite

07 Nov

Peak Design—the makers of top rated and much loved camera accessories that have raised nearly $ 15 million on Kickstarter since their first got into crowdfunding—have just launched a special ‘greatest hits’ 5-day Kickstarter campaign to fund their latest products: a totally redesigned Capture Camera Clip and revamped Slide and Slide Lite camera straps.

The campaign launched this morning, and already Peak Design is racing towards its funding goal at record speed—which was, after all, the point.

“We wanted to bring these redesigned products back to Kickstarter because our backer community brought them to life in the first place,” says Adam Saraceno, Peak Design’s Marketing Director. “We also wanted to get gear into folks’ hands before the end of the year. These are busy times so we opted to keep our Kickstarter short and sweet.”

Here’s the company’s Kickstarter video, to give you an overview of the new products:

Capture Camera Clip

First up, the one that started it all: The Peak Design Capture Camera Clip. The first product Peak Design launched on Kickstarter, the Capture clip is a staple in many a photographers’ camera bag (or rather ON their camera bag), but the original design needed some love.

Enter former Apple design engineer Max Maloney, who took some time to show us the improvements they’ve made on the Clip at PhotoPlus this year.

The clip has been totally redesigned to be smaller, sleeker, and more functional all at the same time. It now features an all aluminum built (no plastic parts in sight), a lighter and smaller build that should still fit on almost any belt or backpack strap out there, an embeddable grip on the backplate so you don’t have to tighten the thing so much for it to stay in place, and a much sleeker profile that’s less likely to snag on clothing or gear.

Here’s a closer look at the new Clip, including a side-by-side with the old version:

The new Capture v3 will cost you a $ 55 pledge (MSRP $ 70). Find out more on Kickstarter.

Slide and Slide Lite

The Capture v3 is probably the most exciting ‘Greatest Hits’ release, but for those of you who love Peak Design’s camera straps, the Slide and Slide Lite revamp is definitely worth looking into.

The Slide (meant for DSLRs) and Slide Lite (meant for mirrorless cameras) are some of Peak Design’s most popular camera straps, and now they’ve been upgraded with updated dual adjusters that keep a lower profile, a new anchor mount for ‘low-profile connection point to bottom of camera’, smooth and durable nylon webbing for easier adjustment, and updated anchor connectors for easier one-handed use.

Here’s a closer look:

The Slide and Slide Lite will MSRP for $ 65 and $ 50, respectively, when they hit store shelves, but if you contribute to the Greatest Hits Kickstarter you’ll be able to get them for $ 50 and $ 35. Click here to learn more.

To see check out either of the new products for yourself or contribute to the campaign—which has already raised nearly $ 50,000 in funding in just a couple of hours!—click here. Estimated delivery for all of the new products is December of 2017.

Wiral LITE cable system lets you capture cinematic shots almost anywhere

20 Oct

A simple cable cam system called Wiral LITE has launched on Kickstarter, where the campaign has already blown away its funding goal, raising nearly a quarter-million dollars in just a few days’ time. The system is comprised of a motorized, remotely-controlled device that rolls across a cable fixed to two poles or similar structures. A camera can be attached to the bottom of Wiral LITE, which itself rolls across the cable while the camera records cinematic motion shots.

The cable cam system is being presented as an alternative to portable motorized slider devices, offering the ability to record motion shots over much larger distances than the average portable slider.

Wiral LITE features a standard camera mount on the bottom and can handle camera/lens weights up to 3.3lbs / 1.5kg. The system includes a ball joint, a GoPro mount, cable, quick reel for retracting the cable, a tightening strap, end stop clips, batteries, and a battery charger.

The cable system offers multiple modes, including a time lapse mode that moves with a minimum speed of 0.006MPH, but the device’s top speed is 28mph / 45kmh.

The team behind the device explains that the Wiral system takes 3 minutes to setup, which involves attaching both ends of the reel to a pair of objects, tightening the cable between the two, and then mounting the Wiral LITE onto the cable. In other words, setup is a breeze:

And once you’re set up, you can capture long-range panning shots like this with ease:

Wiral LITE is being sold to backers for a pledge of $ 200. Bundles are also available for those who want to pledge a bit more, such as an ‘Ultimate Kit’ for pledges of $ 250 or an ‘Extreme Kit’ for $ 1,700.

To learn more or put a pledge in yourself, head over to the Kickstarter page.

Lume Cube returns to Kickstarter with the Life Lite mini LED cube

01 Nov

Lume Cube launched the first generation of its high-powered LED-lighting cube for smartphones and action cameras back in 2014. Now, the company has returned to Kickstarter to raise funding for its follow-up product Life Lite. Compared to the original Lume Cube the Life Lite is about half the size and weight but, at 1000 lumens, still offers approximately 70% of the Lume Cube’s light output.

As before, you can control one Life Lite, or several units, via a smartphone app and a Bluetooth connection. The Life Lite is waterproof down to 10m/33ft, making it suitable for filming surfing and other water-based activities. There are multiple levels of strobe mode for creative lighting effects, a physical multifunction button and a custom fresnel lens. The emitted light has a color temperature of 5600K and the light is charged via a microUSB connector. A full charge gives you approximately 30 minute of illumination.

The Life Lite also comes with an internal magnet and a standard tripod mount, allowing for attachment to a wide range of metallic objects and camera support systems. You can secure a Life Lite now by pledging $ 39 on the project’s Kickstarter page. Shipping is planned for March 2017.

10 Aug

Olympus UK has announced its recommended pricing for the PEN Lite E-PL3. The MSRP will be £549.99. Olympus US has not yet announced pricing but, to put the UK price in context, it is around the same list price as Nikon’s D3100 kit or the Panasonic GF3, 14mm lens combination – both of which have recommended selling prices of $ 699 in the US. Neither territory has yet given details of the even simpler (and less expensive) PEN Mini (E-PM1). Olympus UK says the PEN Lite will be available from ‘late summer.’

Olympus PEN Lite and PEN Mini announced and previewed

03 Jul

Alongside the PEN E-P3, Olympus has announced the PEN Lite and PEN Mini. These closely-related sister models (formally called E-PL3 and E-PM1) feature similar specifications but smaller bodies that borrow heavily from the styling of the company’s XZ-1 enthusiast compact. Both cameras are aimed at the point-and-shoot upgrader and feature 460,000 dot LCDs, rather than the E-P3’s OLED display but otherwise retain much of that camera’s capability, including what’s claimed to be the world’s fastest AF. We’ve been using a PEN Lite for a while and have prepared a brief hands-on preview.
