California dreaming: The zen of photography with Rinzi Ruiz and Jonathan Alcorn

11 Dec

Street photographer Rinzi Ruiz and photojournalist Jonathan Alcorn are both based in the Los Angeles area, but their personal photography takes them to very different places. Ruiz thrives in the bustle of downtown L.A., while Alcorn loses himself photographing skateboarders and surfer-types at Venice Beach. They each find their zen in these environments, shooting until the sun is low in the sky, letting everything slip away except for the shot. Take a look at what zen means to these photographers, and let us know in the comments where you find yours.

The Workflow Process With Jonathan Skow

19 Jan

Hi FashionPhotograhyBlog.com readers,

Vince Gonzales from Vinpix has joined us again on the site, following the interview he did with Trina Turk and Jonathan Skow; the faces behind the popular Californian fashion label, “Trina Turk”, Vince takes Jonathon Skow, LA photographer and fashion celebrity, aside to find out how the photographer processes his workflow when shooting for the “Trina Turk” range. Take it away Vince…

Vinpix Jonathan Skow Trina Turk

Vince Gonzales:  Jonathon, tell me a little about your workflow when you are approaching these shoots when you are going to a location. Our readers are kinda nerdy and techie so you can’t get too nerdy here… obviously, you are shooting digital, but do you shoot any film?

Jonathon Skow: No, no film. All digital

Vince Gonzales: And is it 35 format or medium format?

Jonathon Skow: 35 format.

Vince Gonzales: Do you use natural light for exteriors with strobes?

Vinpix Jonathan Skow Trina Turk

Jonathon Skow: [I use] Pretty much all natural light. I like back lighting, yeah it’s pretty much all natural light. Sometimes we’d use the shiny board or we’d put a black cloth on one side; something that would give in a little bit of shape.

It’s pretty much [natural light], I don’t want it to look like too polished, the idea is like this natural California lifestyle so I don’t want it to feel too refined. It’s nice to me when there’s a little bit of shadow to it, or if there’s some flare or sunspots; things like that I like l welcome.

Vince Gonzales: And what’s your post process? Are you doing that or is that being handled somewhere else?

Vinpix Jonathan Skow Trina Turk

Jonathon Skow: No, I just have a digital tech who comes on the shoots and we use light room. Usually we have a recipe like “oh this [image] let’s try to make this a little warm or less contrast”.  Honestly, and I hate to admit this, but I am influenced a lot by Instagram, in the idea of their filters.

I came into photography from the creative side, being someone old enough to start in film and then moved into digital. I still was kinda [wary] of [digital] you know. I always thought that the film was this natural sort of process that would happen and [when] you would get it back it would be surprise but younger people would be like  “oh but why bother, why not do that yourself on digital?” And I was like “no you can’t do that” but then Instagram  made me think “oh why not put a weird filter on it and have a look”.

Not that we go super extreme but I’ll talk with the digital tech before and we’ll look at some different things and have a plan for the sort of mood of what the [shoot] is going to be. Not that we stray too far but there’s little tweaks.

Vince Gonzales (VinPix) Interviews Trina Turk & Jonathan Skow

Hi FashionPhotograhyBlog.com readers. Do we have a treat for you! Today, we have a special guest at FPBlog, Vince Gonzales, LA based fashion photographer from VinPix and Pro Photo Coalition shares his interview with popular California based fashion designer, Trina Turk and her partner, photographer and fashion celebrity, Jonathan Skow. Vince met with the dynamic fashion duo at their beautiful Palm Springs home and spoke to them about their journey and processes with their retail label, “Trina Turk”.

Vince Gonzales: Trina, I have to tell you that, on this interview coming up, I don’t think I’ve had so many friends say that they wanted to help. I mean you are like a rock star! It’s like anytime I bring up Trina Turk they’re like “Oh my God, I love Trina Turk”… Your fans are very passionate and it’s really fun to see. So, you have women’s apparel, men’s apparel, textiles for the home, retail?

Trina Turk: Yes we do, and we originally started as a wholesale company so we started as a women’s contemporary collection, started wholesale and our first store was actually in Palm Springs, we opened in Palm Springs in 2002. People really associate the brand with Palm Springs although we are really more a Californian brand but since we expanded our store 2 years ago we have now space for “Mr Turk” which Jonathan is designing and you’ve got Trina Turk Residential in its own little area and I think that when people come to Palm Springs our store is often on the to do list and it’s just become a thing you do when you are in Palm Springs.

Vince Gonzales: You guys collaborate on how that brand looks when you shoot and when you design, I imagine…

Trina Turk: Well, Jonathan knows what’s going on in the design process as we are developing the collections. As far as the actual photo shoots for the look books go, it’s really Jonathan. He’s doing the casting, choosing the location etc…

Vince Gonzales (VinPix) Interviews Trina Turk & Jonathan Skow

Jonathan Skow: Well we really talk back and forth even when the first inspiration for the line starts to happen we start talking about “Oh well if the inspiration is ‘dessert road trip’ wouldn’t it be cool to shoot it at that house where we were, that we just saw”.  There are some times where the actual photo shoot is, was where we started thinking about, pretty early on about the design process.

Trina Turk: A lot of the house tours out in Palm Springs and in Los Angeles have resulted in us finding locations that haven’t been shot that much and, so it’s the architecture comes into it as well.

Vince Gonzales: That’s great! I read somewhere that you guys are always working, not in a bad way but you do these tours and you travel. You are always banking concepts and ideas and things like that…

Trina Turk: I mean it’s hard not to. Our company is 18 years old and I think that it becomes part of what we’re doing. You can’t really stop thinking about it and it’s not like there’s a clear definition between what work is and what is not work – it all goes in there.

Jonathan Skow: I think after all these years, we are actually still excited about putting a line together and say “oh, wouldn’t it be cool to do this”. It is still fun to see architecture or when you see designs, colors, prints or whatever it is. When we are travelling it’s not “oh we can’t get away from it”. We embrace it and it’s pretty much what our life is about.

Big thanks to Vince Gonzales for sharing this interview with FPBlog! Stay tuned to FashionPhotographyBlog.com for part 2 of his interview with Trina Turk and Jonathan Skow. BTS: Jonathan Snyder’s So-Cool-It-Must-Be-Fake Night Portrait

16 Oct

When this photo popped up on Gizmodo last week, several of the site's readers could not quite process how the image could have been made. I tweeted at the time that I hoped the guy who shot it was one of our old DINFOS lighting students.

As it turns out, Strobist reader and USAF SSgt. Jonathan Snyder attended the "one extra" Flash Bus day McNally and I did for the Defense Information School in 2011 at Fort Meade in Maryland.

Milphogs are taught to improvise in the field as a matter of course. And turns out, this image was made with neither a tripod nor a speedlight… Read more »
