Huawei P30 Pro features super-wide-angle, 5x optical zoom and ISO 409,600

27 Mar

One year after launching the P20, Huawei has announced its new P-series high-end smartphone models: the P30 and P30 Pro. As usual, the Chinese manufacturer is at the forefront of smartphone camera development and the P30 Pro in particular has some real innovation to offer in the camera department.

The top-of-the-line device comes with a triple-camera setup (Huawei calls it a quad-camera, counting the time-of-flight (ToF) sensor), covering a focal length range that has previously been unheard of on a smartphone. The primary camera features a 1/1.7 40MP quad sensor that puts out 10MP images. The optically stabilized lens comes with an 27mm-equivalent focal length and F1.6 aperture. If you want to go wider there is also a 20MP 16mm-equivalent super-wide-angle option but the P30 Pro’s real highlight is the stabilized 5x (125mm-equivalent) periscope-style tele-camera with folded optics.

Huawei P30 Pro

The concept is very similar to OPPO’s prototype zoom system and allows for a much longer reach than would be possible with a conventional lens in a thin smartphone body. In addition Huawei also uses clever software algorithms to further enhance the P30 Pro’s zoom performance. In combination with a super resolution algorithm which merges several RAW frames into one high-resolution image that is then cropped to produce a zoomed image, a maximum zoom factor of 50x can be reached.

During the presentation Huawei CEO Richard Yu also put a lot of emphasis on the the camera´s low light capability, claiming a maximum ISO of 409,600 and the capability to capture well-exposed images in near darkness (1 Lux). This is made possible through the use of an RYYB sensor in the primary camera. According to Huawei the chip is 40 percent more light sensitive than a conventional RGB sensor. Combined with OIS and a fast F1.6 aperture the new Huawei should be one of the best performing smartphone cameras in low light we have seen.

There is also an improved portrait mode that creates a background-blurring bokeh effect. A first depth-map is created using data from the super-wide and primary cameras. It is then refined with the help of the ToF-laser that can precisely measure subject distance in all ligh conditions. Other imaging innovations include adaptive frame rates in video mode – the camera shoots at 60fps in bright light and with camera motion and reduces to 30fps in lower light or when the camera is held still – and HDR video recording on the front camera.

Other key specs include a Kirin 980 chipset, 8GB RAM, a 6.47-inch display with minimal bezels and FHD+ resolution as well as a 4,200mAh battery with fast charging. The Huawei P30 Pro is available from today but unfortunately isn’t quite a bargain. Pricing ranges from 999 ($ 1130) Euros for the 128GB version. You’ll have to invest 1249 Euros ($ 1410) for the 512GB top-of-the-range model.

Huawei P30 Pro key camera specifications:

  • Triple-camera setup
  • Primary: 40MP, 1/1.7-inch quad sensor; F1.6 aperture, OIS, 27mm-equivalent
  • Tele: 8MP sensor, folded optics with F3.4 aperture, OIS, 125mm-equivalent
  • Super-wide: 20MP, F2.2 aperture, 16mm-equivalent
  • PDAF/Time-of-flight (ToF) autofocus
  • LED flash
  • 32MP front camera, 26mm equivalent, F2 aperture, HDR video
Huawei P30

The P30 is the Pro version’s mode affordable cousin. In the camera department it lacks the 5x optical zoom and comes with a similar camera setup to last year’s Mate 20 Pro. The primary camera uses the same sensor as the Pro but has to make do without an OIS system. The super-wide comes with a lower 16MP resolution and the conventional tele ‘only’ offers an 80mm equivalent focal length.

Other differences include a smaller 6.1-inch OLED display and a lower capacity 3650 mAh battery. The Huawei P30 comes with 6>GB of RAM and 128GB of storage and will set you back 799 Euros ($ 900).

Huawei P30 key camera specifications:

  • Triple-camera setup
  • Primary: 40MP, 1/1.7-inch quad sensor; F1.8 aperture, 27mm-equivalent
  • Tele: 8MP sensor, F2.4 aperture, OIS, 80mm-equivalent
  • Super-wide: 16MP sensor, F2.2-aperture, 16mm-equivalent
  • PDAF/Time-of-flight (ToF) autofocus
  • LED flash

3rd time isn’t a charm for Huawei, who once again gets busted faking smartphone photos

12 Mar

You would think Huawei would’ve learned its lesson by now, but apparently not. Yet again, the Chinese smartphone manufacturer has been caught suggesting DSLR photos were images taken with its upcoming P30 and P30 Pro smartphones in an advertisement.

In both 2016 and 2018, Huawei was caught trying to do the same thing by passing off a DSLR photos as images captured with its P9 and Nova 3 smartphones, respectively.

$ (document).ready(function() { SampleGalleryV2({“containerId”:”embeddedSampleGallery_6581560962″,”galleryId”:”6581560962″,”isEmbeddedWidget”:true,”selectedImageIndex”:0,”isMobile”:false}) });

This time, Hauwei shared a collection of advertisements, seen above, on its Weibo social media account to promote the launch of its upcoming P30 Pro smartphone on March 26th with a visual design that suggested the images were captured with the much-anticipated periscope camera system inside the devices.

In a result that’s surprising no one, it turns out the images weren’t actually captured with the smartphone. While it doesn’t take much of a pixel-peeper to tell the images weren’t actually captured with a smartphone, GadgetMatch took a closer look and confirmed the images weren’t just DSLR images, but stock photos that can easily be licensed by anyone.

Using reverse image search, GadgetMatch discovered the volcano image was first shared on Flickr back in 2009 by photographer Tom Pfeiffer and also available for use on Getty Images. Similarly, the duck image was captured on a DSLR by photographer Jake Olson from a photo shoot some years ago.

Not long after it had been called out, Huawei updated the advertisements with a disclaimer saying the ads were meant only as an example, not photos actually captured by the P30 or P30 Pro. Huawei also made the following statement to GSMArena regarding the ‘misunderstanding’ in the P30 Pro preview ads:

We’ve been made aware that there might have been some misunderstanding regarding our recent HUAWEI P30 Series teaser posters. We would like to reiterate that those are, in fact, only teaser posters, and are only intended to hint at the unique new features that will come with the HUAWEI P30 Series. Huawei has acquired the licenses to the original images and the posters are artistic renditions of said features only. We’d like to take this opportunity to thank the media for their interest in our posters. We have much to announce in the coming weeks. Please stay tuned!

Fool us once, shame on you. Fool us three times…we can’t get fooled again. Let’s see how long it’ll take until we’re inevitably running the fourth edition of this article.

Huawei P30 Pro to come with periscope-style tele lens and updated night mode

06 Mar

Huawei will unveil the successor of its P20 series smartphone at an event in Paris on the 26th of March. However, the company has already revealed a couple of interesting details about the P30 Pro camera to Android Central during a meeting at MWC in Barcelona.

According to Huawei’s VP of Global Product Marketing, Clement Wong, the top-of-the-range model in the P30 series will feature a periscope-style tele camera, similar to what we’ve seen on OPPO’s 10x prototype that is expected to make an appearance in a finalized product any day now.

Huawei hasn’t provided any information about the exact magnification the module will provide but given the P20 Pro already offered a 3x optical and 5x optical zoom last year, we’d expect an improvement over that. So maybe, the P30 Pro will beat OPPO to the line and be the first smartphone on the market to come with a 10x optical zoom.

A photo of the moon that was recently captured with the device in question by Huawei CEO Richard Yu would certainly indicate a zoom factor that is not available on any current smartphones.

In addition to the powerful zoom, Huawei engineers have also been working to improve the previous generation’s low light capabilities. The company did not provide any detail but suggested the next version of its night camera will be major upgrade over the already pretty impressive existing one. Despite the current lack of detail, it seems there’s a lot to look forward to for mobile photographers at the Huawei launch in a few weeks time.

Huawei P30 Pro could come with periscope-style zoom lens

25 Jan

There’s a good chance we’ll see a periscope-design 10x zoom smartphone camera from Chinese manufacturer OPPO at MWC this year. However, it looks like rival Huawei could follow soon after.

According to reports from people using engineering samples, Huawei’s upcoming P-series flagship model, the P30 Pro, could come with a periscope zoom module for large optical magnification. The primary camera will likely use a new 6-series image sensor from Sony, possibly the 1/1.8″ 38MP IMX607 model.

Its sister model, the P30, is said to keep the existing triple-camera setup of the current Mate 20 Pro.

The rumors also say that both phones will now feature an OLED display, insteaf of only the Pro version. This is necessitated by a move to optical in-display fingerprint readers. Both devices will be powered by Huawei’s Kirin 980 chipset with 8GB of RAM on the standard model and 12GB on the Pro.

With its triple-cam models P20 Pro and Mate 20 Pro Huawei has released two of the best camera phones in 2018 and it looks like the company has no intentions to slow down. We’ll know more in a few weeks time around MWC in Barcelona.

Huawei joins the “hole-punch” game with the Nova 4

17 Dec

Huawei has announced the latest model in its range of smartphones, the Nova 4. It’s the brand’s first device with a “hole-punch” front camera, that is mostly hidden behind the display and does away with the display “notch” found on many other high-end phones.

The Nova 4 isn’t the first phone with a “hole-punch” camera – that honor goes to the Samsung A8s – but it looks like its 25Mp front camera is peeking through a smaller-diameter hole than the Samsung’s, minimizing the “display disruption”.

Huawei sub-brand Honor has also already pre-announced its VIew 20 phone which seems to have a lot in common with the Nova 4. For starters, there’s the same “hole-punch” design and the two devices also share the same 48MP primary cameras on the rear.

The Nova 4 comes with a triple-cam setup, however, including a 2MP depth-sensor, while the main camera setup of the View 20 is still unknown. In terms of chipset the phones are going down different paths, though. The Nova 4 is powered by last year’s Kirin 970 processor; the View 20 phone will use the newer Kirin 980.

The Nova 4 display measures 6.4 inches and comes with a 2310 x 1080 resolution. 8GB of RAM are plenty and 128 of built-in storage offer space for a good number of images and video.

For now the Nova 4 has only been released in China where it will cost approximately $ 490 (3,399 yuan) but, like previous Nova models the phone will likely make it to other regions soon. If you don’t want to spend quite as much, there is also a cheaper variant ($ 450) that replaces the 48MP primary shooter with a more modest 20MP unit.

Samsung and Huawei introduce the ‘hole-punch’ front camera in their latest smartphones

12 Dec

Smartphone manufacturers are facing a dilemma these days. Consumers want a display that covers as much of the front of the device and has bezels that are as thin as possible. On the other hand some components, for example the front camera, proximity and light sensors or the earpiece have to be placed onto the front of the device as well to work efficiently, taking away some of the available real estate from the display.

This has resulted in the much-dreaded display-“notch” as it was first popularized by the iPhone X and since then has appeared on most other high-end phones as well.

Apple iPhone XR with display notch

Samsung and Huawei are now going down a different route, however, with their new A8s and Honor View20 models, respectively. Both new smartphones feature a so-called ‘hole-punch’ front camera which is designed to be less obtrusive than a ‘notch.’

In this design the camera is hidden behind the display which comes with a small circular hole for the lens to peek through. It’s worth noting however, that unlike many current high-end models neither the A8s nor the View20 come with any face recognition features that would require additional sensors at the front. Both new devices are placed in the mid-range bracket of the market which makes them more suitable for the new design.

The View20’s main camera also comes with a promising specification. The camera features the same 1/2″ Sony sensor with 48MP resolution that we are also expecting to see in an upcoming Xiaomi device. The sensor’s high pixel count is used for high-quality digital zooming and computational frame-stacking methods, though, so don’t expect any medium-format resolution out of your smartphone any time soon.

Huawei Mate 20 Pro triple cam offers focal lengths from 16 to 80mm

16 Oct
Huawei Mate 20 Pro

Huawei launched its latest flagship smartphone Mate 20 Pro at an event in London today. Like the P20 Pro, the new device comes with a triple-camera setup on the rear but replaces the P20 Pro’s monochrome camera with a super-wide-angle unit, offering the widest range of focal lengths of all current smartphones. Using a combination of optical and digital zoom the new Huawei offers a zoom range from 16 to 270mm equiv.

The 40MP main camera is the same as on the P20 Pro and comes with large 1/1.7″ sensor, F1.8 aperture and 27mm equivalent focal length. The 8MP tele-camera features a F2.4 aperture and 80mm equivalent focal length.

The new super-wide-angle offers a 16mm equivalent focal length and uses a 20MP sensor with F2.2 aperture lens. A minimum focus distance of 2.5cm allows for better macro performance.

Very high ISO values up to 51200 allow for photography in very dark conditions and a new Super HDR mode that fuses 10 frames at Raw level offers improved dynamic range. New AI features include a Portrait Color video mode that isolates human subjects by desaturating the colors around them in real-time. The 24MP front camera support 3D Face Unlock and can also be used for the authorization of mobile payments.

In terms of non-camera specs and features the Huawei Mate 20 Pro offers everything you would expect from a high-end smartphone in 2018. Google’s Android Pie OS is powered by a Kirin 980 chipset and 6GB of RAM. 128GB of built-in memory can be expanded via a new memory card format: Huawei’s new Nano-SD is 45% smaller than a MicroSD card.

The body offers IP86 water and dust protection and houses a 6.39-inch curved OLED display with 3120 x 1440 resolution and very thin bezels. DCI-P3 HDR is supported as well.

Huawei also launched the Mate 20 which comes with a 6.53-inch LCD display and a 12MP main camera but otherwise very similar specs to its top-end cousin. The Huawei Mate 20 Pro will be available from October 16 for approximately $ 1200 (EUR 1049). The Mate 20 is slightly more affordable at approximately $ 1040 (EUR 899).

Huawei caught trying to pass off DSLR images as smartphone photos…again

20 Aug

It appears Huawei hasn’t learned its lesson. Two years after the Chinese smartphone manufacturer was busted for trying to pass off a DSLR image as a photograph captured with its P9 smartphone, it’s under scrutiny yet again.

Huawei is now taking heat over a recent advertisement for its Nova 3 and 3i smartphones, wherein Huawei insinuates certain photos were captured with a smartphone when a behind-the-scenes photo proves that’s not the case.

The video, which is 30 seconds long, shows various scenes in which the subjects snap photos using various built-in camera features, including beauty, HDR and AI modes. Although the video never explicitly states the images were captured with a Huawei smartphone, it’s very much implied that’s the case.

A critical eye would instantly realize the images weren’t captured with the phone. But for the sake of empirical evidence, we’ll reference the above image uploaded to Instagram (and subsequently deleted) by Sarah Elshamy, the actress in the ad. In the behind-the-scenes still, pictured above, it’s clear the main actor was holding his hand out to make it appear as though he’s holding a phone, when in reality the scene was being shot with a Canon DSLR.

Again, Huawei never specifically mentions what the ad was shot with, leaving a bit of room for leniency. But it’s misleading at best, and downright false advertising at worst. We’ve reached out to Huawei for an official comment and will update this article accordingly if we hear back.

Huawei launches photography contest with an AI judge

20 Jul

Huawei has launched the world’s first photography contest with both AI and human judges. The company invites photographers to submit their best images to its ‘Spark A Renaissance’ competition, during which time both Huawei’s P20 Pro smartphone AI and Leica pro photographer Alex Lambrechts will review the images.

The contest revolves around the P20 Pro, Huawei’s smartphone co-engineered with Leica. The handset features a triple-camera system and Huawei’s Master AI, which works in real-time to determine which of 19 categories any particular scene belongs to, automatically adjusting the settings in an effort to produce the ideal image.

The contest began on July 12 and will run for 8 weeks. During this time, photographers can submit their images via a Facebook Messenger chatbot, where Huawei explains that its P20 AI will evaluate it in multiple ways:

Trained using 4,000,000 images taken by professional photographers and picture editors the AI will then give each photo a personalised AI score based on parameters such as focus, jitter, deflection, colour and composition.

Huawei’s competition will revolve around five themes total, including “Deep in Detail” and “A New Renaissance,” with the winner in each category receiving a P20 Pro smartphone. A total of 10 winners from the themed categories will be given a trip to Florence, Italy, where they’ll attend a Leica masterclass.

Both Leica photographer Alex Lambrechts and Huawei’s AI will review the images taken during the Florence trip. The final winner chosen from them will receive the Grand Prize, a tour of three European countries. As well, Huawei says the top photos from the contest “will be sold to raise money for a local charity.”

Huawei is currently accepting entries for the contest’s first theme: A New Renaissance. The next theme, After Dark, starts on July 24, followed by three more with the final theme starting on August 28. All five themes can be found here.

Photographers must submit their images to the Huawei Spark A Renaissance Facebook Messenger chatbot, which guides users through the submission process:

Deadlines, eligibility requirements, and more can be found in the contest’s Terms and Conditions. The contest is only open to legal residents in Europe.

iFixit teardown reveals OIS on all three cameras in the Huawei P20 Pro

11 Apr
Credit: iFixit

The team at iFixit has performed its usual teardown on the new Huawei P20 Pro triple-cam equipped smartphone to assess the device’s repairability. The score for the latter is 4/10—which means it’s probably advisable to leave repairs to trained service personnel—but far more interesting to us photographers is the detailed look iFixit got at the Huawei triple-camera setup.

You can see the full teardown here, but the main and most pleasant surprise is that Huawei actually built in more stabilization than their specs revealed.

In the official Huawei specifications, only the tele-lens with 80mm equivalent focal length is listed as optically stabilized, while the RGB main camera and the the monochrome secondary unit rely on the Kirin chipset’s neural processing unit for ensuring sharp images. However, according to the iFixit engineers, all three cameras come equipped with OIS hardware, which makes us wonder if there are plans to activate this hardware via a firmware update at some point in the future.

Credit: iFixit

The image above shows the triple-camera in all its glory. The primary RGB camera is placed at the center of the setup and uses a large 40MP 1/1.7 inch sensor with an F1.8 aperture and a maximum ISO setting of 102,400, on the left you can see the 20 MP monochrome camera with F/1.6 aperture, and the 8MP/F2.4 telephoto is on the right. Next to the triple-camera the engineers have placed the 24MP front unit.
