Sony releases stunning wide-angle footage shot on its upcoming Airpeak drone

Sony first announced its official entry into the drone sector early this year at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES). Though there still aren’t solid details on a release date or pricing for its Airpeak drone, the company recently unveiled some stunning wide-angle footage captured over Okinawa, Japan’s, remote island called Irimote. Besides the scenery, the video also showcases the Airpeak drone in action carrying both Sony’s a7S III and FX3 cameras.

What’s revealed, as well, is how the drone is able to carry a payload that includes their new 14mm F1.8 GM lens. Although rather large in size for a drone, Sony claims that the Airpeak is the smallest model available that is able to carry its Alpha line of cameras. For comparison’s sake, Freefly Systems has been working on its Astro drone, which is compatible with Sony’s a7R IV camera, but hasn’t been released yet.

One issue pointed out about the Airpeak is that it is a quadcopter. For comparison’s sake, DJI’s Matrice 600 is a hexacopter. If one rotor fails on the Matrice 600, the drone will still remain airborne. That’s not the case with a quadcopter, and Sony camera’s aren’t exactly cheap. We can also see from the latest video that two batteries are needed to power the drone. This is a typical failsafe, also found in DJI’s Inspire 2, should one battery fail during flight.

Much like a drone of its class, the Airpeak also has an additional front-facing pilot’s camera as well as obstacle avoidance sensors on the front and back of the aircraft. There aren’t any sideways sensors but unlike a DJI Phantom or Mavic series drone, which is constrained by a 3-axis gimbal that only tilts up and down, the AirPeak doesn’t need those additional sensors since it only needs to fly forwards or backwards since the camera can also rotate from side to side.

It also looks as though Sony hasn’t created a gimbal for the Airpeak yet. Instead, the Gremsy T3V3 3-axis camera stabilizer is attached. It is unclear whether or not Sony will develop their own gimbal. The remote is clearly made by Sony, since the branding is there, and a tablet is attached – suggesting, for now, that a built-in screen won’t be available.

The software being used to power the drone is built on Mapbox, which also powers self-driving cars. What this means is that Airpeak users will be able to pre-plan flights.

This isn’t the first teaser video Sony has released for its Airpeak drone. Sony also introduced a VISION-S concept car at CES. The Airpeak was featured in the video, above, where you can see its landing gear extensions retract upward, after takeoff, to give a fuller field of view for the camera. Wind resistance is another pain point for drone users. Sony recently created a wind tunnel to illustrate how well the Airpeak handles gusts up to 45 mph.

As mentioned above, a definitive release date and price point has yet to be announced. Sony is still looking for professional drone videographers and photographers, its target audience, to test out the Airpeak. You must be located in the United States or Japan to participate at this time.

Incredible video showcases world’s first 8K VR drone footage of Iceland’s Mt. Fagradalsfjall volcano

Incredible new footage, captured with an 8K Insta360 Pro 2 mounted to the bottom of a DJI drone, shows the Mt. Fagradalsfjall volcano in Geldingadalur, Iceland as it continues to erupt. The immersive visuals were captured by Ragnar Th. Sigurðsson, founder of Arctic Images, and drone pilot Arnar Þór Þórsson in collaboration with Perlan Museum, ‘which hosts a state-of-the-art 8K planetarium and other exhibitions on Iceland’s geographic wonders.’

The Mt. Fagradalsfjall volcano erupted for the first time in roughly 800 years back on March 19, 2021. Since then, it’s been spewing lava from its fissures, making for incredible visuals that have brought photographers from around the world to see the geological phenomenon. We’ve already seen a number of incredible videos captured with drones flying over the active volcano, but none of which allow you to control what you’re seeing. Until now, that is.

While YouTube limits playback to 4K, the footage was recorded in 8K using an Insta360 Pro 2 attached to the bottom of a DJI Matrice 600 drone. According to Insta360’s blog post detailing the creation of this video, the drone and camera flew over lava that reached reached temperatures as high as 1240°C degrees (2264°F). Despite the intense heat, which we’ve already seen is capable of melting drones, both the Insta360 Pro 2 and DJI Matrice 600 survived the flight.

For the best viewing experience, make sure you’re using a browser that supports YouTube’s VR content and have plenty of bandwidth to stream the video at full resolution. Another option, if you have one on hand, is to use a VR headset to really immerse yourself in the footage.

New DAIN algorithm generates near-perfect slow-motion videos from ordinary footage

Researchers with Google, UC Merced and Shanghai Jiao Tong University have detailed the development of DAIN, a depth-aware video frame interpolation algorithm that can seamlessly generate slow-motion videos from existing content without introducing excessive noise and unwanted artifacts. The algorithm has been demonstrated in a number of videos, including historical footage boosted to 4K/60fps.

Rapidly advancing technologies have paved the way for high-resolution displays and videos; the result is a mass of lower-resolution content made for older display and video technologies that look increasingly poor on modern hardware. Remastering this content to a higher resolution and frame rate will improve the viewing experience, but would typically be a costly undertaking reserved only for the most popular media.

Artificial intelligence is a promising solution for updating older video content as evidenced by the growing number of fan-remastered movies and TV shows. Key to these efforts are algorithms trained to upscale and, when necessary, repair the individual frames of videos, which are recompiled into a higher-resolution ‘remaster.’

The newly detailed DAIN algorithm is different — rather than upscaling and repairing the individual frames in a video, this AI tool works by generating new frames and slotting them between the original frames, increasing the video’s FPS for smoother and, depending on how many frames are generated, slower-motion content.

This is a process called motion (video frame) interpolation, and it typically causes a drop in quality by adding unwanted noise and artifacts to the final videos. The DAIN algorithm presents a solution to this problem, offering motion interpolation to boost frames-per-second up to 480fps without introducing any readily noticeable artifacts.

The resulting content is high-quality and nearly visually identical to the source footage, but with the added smoothness that comes with increasing the frames-per-second to 60fps. In addition, DAIN has been demonstrated as capable of transforming ordinary 30/60fps footage into smooth slow-motion videos without choppiness or decreased quality.

According to the researchers, DAIN is ‘compact, efficient, and fully differentiable,’ offering results that perform ‘favorably against state-of-the-art frame interpolation methods on a wide variety of datasets.’ The technology has many potential uses, including recovering lost frames, improving content to be more visually appealing for viewers, generating slow-motion from regular footage and more.

Such technology is arguably necessary for preserving aging media in a useful way, making it possible for new generations of people to experience historical footage, old TV shows and movies, home videos and similar content using modern high-resolution displays. As well, the technology could be useful for content creators of all sorts, enabling them to salvage the footage they already have, improve the quality of old clips for use in documentaries and similar things.

The researchers explain on their project website:

Starting from the birth of photographing in the 18-th centuries, videos became important media to keep vivid memories of their age being captured. And it’s shown in varying forms including movies, animations, and vlogs. However, due to the limit of video technologies including sensor density, storage and compression, quite a lot of video contents in the past centuries remain at low quality.

Among those important metrics for video quality, the most important one is the temporal resolution measured in frame-per-second or fps for short. Higher-frame-rate videos bring about more immersive visual experience to users so that the reality of the captured content is perceived. Therefore, the demand to improve the low-frame-rate videos, particularly the 12fps old films, 5~12fps animations, pixel-arts and stop motions, 25~30 fps movies, 30fps video games, becomes more and more urgent.

YouTuber uses AI to turn historic 1911 New York trip footage into colorized 4K/60p video

In 1911, Swedish company Svenska Biografteatern captured footage of a trip to New York, resulting in more than eight minutes of video that, in its original form, is quite low resolution with a low frame rate.

Various efforts over the years have attempted to improve the resolution, frame rate, colors and other details with different results, but one of the best edits thus far comes from Denis Shiryaev, who recently shared the edited video on Reddit.

According to the video’s description, as well as a comment left by Shiryaev on Reddit, the project involved four neural networks, including DeOldify. In all, the various neural networks managed to increase the framerate to 60 fps, increase the resolution to 4K, bump up sharpness and even colorize. This is one of multiple videos Shiryaev has upscaled and improved; other examples include a video from the Apollo mission and ‘Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat’ from 1896.

Qualcomm shows off the first 8K footage captured with its Snapdragon 865 chipset

One of the defining features of Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 865 chipset, which we covered back in December, is its ability to shoot 8K video. We’re yet to see a device make the most of the 865 Snapdragon, but Qualcomm has shared a teaser video showing the 8K resolution in all its glory.

The device Qualcomm used to capture the video is a prototype smartphone with a Sony Sony IMX586 image sensor inside. It was captured back in November 2019 at various locations around Arizona, including the Grand Canyon, Horseshoe Bend and the Petroglyphs near Antelope Canyon. It’s suggested, of course, to view this in a compatible browser and on the highest-resolution screen you can find to make the most of the footage.

Video: Watch 72 high-speed cameras capture bullet time slow-mo footage

Popular YouTube account Hydraulic Press Channel has introduced a major filming setup upgrade involving 72 high-speed Chronos 1.4 cameras mounted on a large rig suspended above the hydraulic press machine. The cameras are able to capture nearly 3,000,000 frames per second, according to the channel’s host, resulting in high-resolution 360-degree bullet-time videos.

The camera rig is used to show packs of playing cards exploding outwards under the pressure of the hydraulic press. It’s unclear how often this rig will be used for hydraulic press videos, but a comment published by the account indicates the team plans to introduce a new ‘Bullet Time Show’ on the Beyond The Press channel.

The Chronos 1.4 high-speed camera is offered by Kron Technologies with color and monochrome sensor options starting at $ 2,999.

Skydio releases sample footage captured with its upcoming Skydio 2 drone

Last month, California-based drone manufacturer Skydio teased a follow up to their premier R1 model. Slated for release this Fall, the company recently updated email subscribers with more details about what they’re calling the ‘Skydio 2,’ presumably for the time being. The reel, above, demonstrates some of the new drone’s capabilities including the ability to navigate and fly through numerous obstacles, track subjects, and even perform a 360° spin.

Besides being able to fly autonomously and avoid obstacles, the ‘Skydio 2’ will also boast a breakthrough algorithm that can determine ‘where and how to fly to get the most stunning cinematic shots possible.’ Perhaps this ability was referenced in the second frame as the ‘Skydio 2’ gradually pulled away from a single beachgoer to reveal a stunning tropical island.

With the R1, Skydio positioned itself as a drone maker for consumers and enthusiasts. Using Nvidia’s onboard computer, the same technology that powers self-driving cars, the R1 can map it surroundings, avoid obstacles in every direction and track a single subject. Remote pilots can launch and fly effortlessly with this built-in technology.

Now, with the ‘Skydio 2,’ the focus has shifted to quality cinematography. A redesigned camera promises polished, professional-grade video. This, alone, makes it a huge improvement from its predecessor. If they offer it up in a compact, light-weight frame with increased battery life, they’ll have created the consumer-grade drone to beat.

Storm chaser captures incredible tornado footage with a drone

You don’t need to watch the classic 1996 film Twister to understand that storm chasing is risky, life-threatening work; but that didn’t prevent WXChasing’s Brandon Clement from honing in on a tornado located near Sulphur, Oklahoma, and capturing some epic 4k footage with a drone.

‘I’ve been working on getting that shot for about three years now,’ said Clement to the Washington Post. Clement has been chasing storms since childhood. ‘I’ve probably done a half-million miles chasing across the country by now. But this one is pretty special.’

According to reports from AccuWeather, at least 25 tornadoes were reported across southern and central United States on Tuesday including Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, and Arkansas. Clement happened to be in the path of the non-destructive occurrence in Oklahoma and expertly maneuvered the drone to capture a perspective that impressed meteorologists.

FStoppers pointed out that the last time such poignant footage was captured, it came from the perspective of a helicopter over three decades ago. KARE helicopter pilot Max Messmer, along with photographer Tom Empey, stumbled upon a forming tornado and broadcast the entire phenomenon live during the 5 o’clock news.

While tornadoes have been captured from the perspective of a drone before, this is the first time a remote pilot has created something that transcends the typical, static imagery taken from a distance.

Kandao uses AI to convert 30fps 360-degree video into super-slow-motion footage

Kandao, the makers of professional-grade 360-degree cameras and the Kandao Raw+ image stacking tool for Raw files has launched another potentially very useful software feature. AI Slow-motion is designed to convert 360-degree video footage that has been recorded at a regular 30 frames per second into 300 fps super-slow-motion clips.

The software uses artificial intelligence and machine learning methods to predict and generate intermediate frames for a smooth and detailed slow-motion output from existing 360/VR footage.

The company says that compared to optical flow or interpolation methods that are used in other applications, the AI-generated footage offers more accurate frame interpolation as well as fewer jagged edges and other artifacts. The software also requires less powerful hardware than comparable systems.

The feature will first be implemented into the Kandao QooCam Studio and Kandao Studio applications, allowing for an up to 10x slow-motion effect. For example, 360-degree video originally captured at 8k 30fps can be converted into 8K 240fps slow-motion or 4k 60fps video into 4K 480fps footage, by selecting a factor of eight during the 360 stitching workflow in the software software.

The bad news is that, although the algorithm behind the feature can work with any existing videos, in a first step the technology will only work with video from Kandao cameras. However, the company says it will make AI slow motion available for other cameras in the future, which is good news for 360-degree videographers who would like to work with super-slow-motion without splashing out on ultra-powerful hardware.

Kandao camera users can now download Qoocam Studio with AI slow motion free of charge on the Kandao website. Kandao Studio V3.0 with AI slow-motion will available on 23rd April.

Drone footage shows the extent of damage from the Notre Dame Cathedral fire

The Notre Dame Cathedral, located on a small island on the Seine River in Paris, has withstood the French Revolution, two world wars and the horrors of Nazi occupation. A devastating fire ripped through the 850-year-old landmark this past Monday, decimating its vaulting, roof and spire. The above drone footage, courtesy of Ruptly, shows the extent of the damage. A panorama from Gigarama offers up additional context.

Up to 500 firefighters battled the flames into the late evening on Monday. According to a recent article in The Guardian, the cathedral was 15 to 30 minutes away from complete destruction if efforts to prevent the fire from reaching the bell towers had not succeeded. The two towers did not incur any structural damage.

Some credit for this small triumph can be attributed to the use of DJI drones, a Mavic Pro and Matrice M210. Remote pilots were able to track the movement of the flames and inform firefighters on where they should aim the fire hoses. ‘The drones allowed us to correctly use what we had at our disposal,’ said fire brigade spokesman Gabriel Plus in comments translated from French.

French President Emanuel Macron has vowed to completely restore the structure in five years time, an ambitious goal considering that the Notre Dame Cathedral took several hundred years to build. Police say the fire was likely an accident caused in the wake of renovations, though a full investigation is currently underway.
