DJI teases new folding drone announcement for January 23rd

18 Jan

DJI is getting ready to unveil a new… something… on January 23rd. We know this because the Chinese drone maker (and camera company) just released a teaser video that hints at a live product announcement that morning. The tagline, Adventure Unfolds, implying that it might be a new folding drone, possibly a replacement for the Mavic Pro that only recently got some real competition.

The video is made up mostly of stock video footage with epic music playing in the background, but DJI does offer a few tantalizing closeups of a sleek looking new drone (we assume… at least). The photos don’t reveal anything at all, really, but here are a couple of screenshots just in case you want to get speculating:

The description of the video reads, “Your next great journey begins at 10 am EST on Jan 23, 2018,” and it looks like DJI will be streaming the announcement live at this link.

Oru Origami-Inspired Folding Kayak is Back with an Updated Design

15 Aug

[ By SA Rogers in Design & Products & Packaging. ]

City dwellers with small apartments and limited storage can now own a kayak that folds up into a suitcase-sized package perfect for toting on your bike or public transit. The Oru Kayak originally debuted on Kickstarter in 2012, and every few years since then, they’ve released an updated model, with their lineup including the casual Beach LT for day trips, the Bay ST for longer days and the Coast XT for rugged conditions in surf and wind.

Earlier this year, they returned to Kickstarter to raise funds for a limited edition design in collaboration with 1% for the Planet with a custom green tree print, and now, they’re offering another limited edition: the United by Blue style.

The Oru Beach LT Kayak: United by Blue edition has all the same features as the standard Beach LT, but with the addition of a seamless graphic print in either orange or navy blue. The collaboration is a natural fit considering that United by Blue has spent the last few years organizing volunteer ocean and river cleanups using Oru kayaks, and lots of urban kayakers donate their time on the water in a similar manner.

The origami-inspired folding design of Oru’s Beach LT folds from flat and compact into a standard-sized kayak in under five minutes, while the more complex models take 10 or 15 minutes to assemble. As anyone who’s ever owned and transported a kayak can imagine, the ability to fold such an unwieldy object is a welcome innovation, especially if you don’t have a garage or basement to store it in, or a vehicle of your own. But the design isn’t just for newbies – it was made for everyone from the weekender to the fisherman in mind, for short trips or multi-day excursions.

Get your exclusive UBB x Our Kayak Undercurrent Pack at the United By Blue website, or check out the other offerings at OruKayak.com.

Amphibious Folding Motorcycle from Russia Fits in the Trunk of a Car

12 Aug

“How long I’ve wanted this dream to come true,” wails Twisted Sister as a motorcycle zips through a mud pit that’s snatching the boots of its rider in this frankly ridiculous video of the Russian motorbike Taurus 2×2. The video shows the bike zooming through giant puddles, pulling a trailer piled with hay bales and even giving a second motorcycle a lift like it weighs next to nothing. Designed specifically for agricultural purposes and recreation in rural Russia, the bike definitely shows off what it can do, leaving no doubt that it can tackle some serious tasks.

Perhaps the most jaw-dropping moment is when the rider drops the Taurus right into a body of water and it gently bobs to the surface thanks to those bulbous tires and its mere 181-pound weight. It’s extra-light, amphibious and takes just five minutes to dismantle for transport inside another vehicle. It’s not street legal, however – riders have to stick to the back roads of Russia, but that’s really where the Taurus shines.

It may not be pretty, but it’s impressively aggressive, navigating landscapes that even the toughest dirt bikes wouldn’t dare take on. Can’t you just imagine shirtless Vladimir Putin on the back of this thing? The Taurus is currently only available in Russia, but its creators say they’re hoping to sell it internationally sometime soon.

Nesting Architecture: Folding Models of Eastern Bloc Buildings

13 Mar

architecture block nesting dolls

This series of recycled cardboard models references both the functional styles of postwar Soviet architecture as well as the Russian tradition of handcrafted nesting dolls.

In the wake of World War II, European cities were forced to rebuild in a hurry, focusing on cheap and efficient structures that could effectively be mass-produced. Blokoshka (from: Matryoshka and blocks) by Polish studio Zupagrafika borrows from the pragmatic minimalism of this architectural history.

The four units represent four types of building in four places:  the sleeping districts of Moscow, Plattenbau Constructions of East Berlin, ruin-topping estates of Warsaw of moscow, and Panelak blocks of Prague.

The prefabricated pieces are nestled in sheets of cardboard, ready to be folded into place without the need for glue, scissors or other tools. Each resulting structure tucks neatly into the next, so the sets can be deployed into districts or recombined into shelf-sitting modules.

Google awarded patent for folding handheld camera design

14 Jan

$ (document).ready(function() { SampleGalleryV2({“targetContainerClass”:”sampleGalleryImageViewerContainer”,”galleryId”:”6782824935″,”isEmbeddedWidget”:true,”selectedImageIndex”:0,”startInCommentsView”:false,”isMobile”:false}) });

Global tech giant Google could be joining the camera business if a patent it was awarded this month is anything to go by. Filed in June 2014 and just approved on the 12th January this year, the patent issued by the United States Patent and Trademark Office is for a design for a folding camera that’s hinged in the middle like a clamshell mobile phone. The design appears to allow the camera to stand upright on its own, which presents a great deal of stability and also the ability to shoot selfies. It isn’t clear from the drawings whether the camera’s screen is inside the fold or on the back outer surface, but the significant bulge of the lens housing suggests the camera has a wide ranging zoom or high class optics.

The design allows the camera to open out so that its backside outer cover/screen can be brought to face in the same direction as the lens, with the front and back of the device creating one long flush surface, other than a gutter in the fold.

The patent might, of course, come to nothing, but it isn’t inconceivable that the company that seems to be into everything should want to create a standalone camera too. We will have to wait and see, but in the meantime can enjoy a little speculation – the patent is good for 14 years.

Do you think the camera will come to life or would Google be crazy to produce it? Let us know in the comments.

In The Fold: 10 Futuristic Folding + Flexible Computer Ideas

30 Apr

flexible computer concepts

The concept of computers has changed dramatically over the past 50 years. They have gone from room-sized monstrosities to desktop beasts to laptop machines to tiny powerhouses that we can carry in our pockets. But it would be a mistake to think that computers are done evolving. The materials we use to build computers are constantly changing, and their form factors will undoubtedly change rapidly as well. These concepts show just what might be possible in the very near future of computer design.

Napkin PC Concept

napkin computer

Operating on the idea that most great ideas start as napkin sketches, designer Avery Holleman decided to design a computer system that looks just like a group of napkins. A stack of napkin-like screens and a set of “pens” are kept in a handy holder, allowing collaborators to simply grab one of each and sketch out an idea.

The holder is actually a base station and computer, allowing all of the processing to be done in the case so that the “napkins” themselves can remain small and easy to handle. A couple of napkins can roll up and be secured with a kind of napkin ring that holds two pens, letting the system go with you to impromptu meetings or anywhere great ideas might strike.

Feno Foldable Notebook

Designer Niels Van Hoof had a compelling vision for the modern laptop: why not eliminate wasted space and make the screen itself fold up to make the entire machine smaller? The screen would use OLED technology to let it fold in half without damaging the display.

The keyboard could then shrink significantly, allowing just enough room for the keys and eliminating the vast amounts of space under the keyboard that is usually dedicated to the trackpad. A pop-out mouse takes care of that, letting you navigate naturally and then store the mouse inside the laptop’s body when you’re done.
