Fujifilm shows off XF 50mm F1.0 lens, teases fastest GF lens yet

05 Feb

$ (document).ready(function() { SampleGalleryV2({“containerId”:”embeddedSampleGallery_8216158774″,”galleryId”:”8216158774″,”isEmbeddedWidget”:true,”selectedImageIndex”:0,”isMobile”:false}) });

In amongst the X100V hullabaloo in London today, Fujifilm also discussed three new lenses spread across their two interchangeable lens camera systems. Unfortunately, we have neither press releases nor full specifications for these lenses, but you can get a sense for their size and how they handle from our hands-on photos with the mockups.

The first lens is the Fujifilm XF 50mm F1.0. We’ve covered this lens before; it was originally going to be a 35mm F1.0 lens (52.5mm equivalent focal length), but Fujifilm pivoted to a 50mm F1.0 (75mm equivalent) design due to size, weight and autofocus speed considerations. As you can see, it’s still a big lens when mounted on an X-T3 and comes with a 77mm filter thread and carries a ‘WR’ label for weather resistance, but manages to weigh in under a kilo. Judging from the aperture ring, the lens is capable of a minimum aperture of F16.

Next up is the GF 30mm F3.5 for the company’s medium-format GFX system. This lens has a roughly 24mm equivalent field of view, a common moderate-wide focal length that’s handy for everything from architecture to reportage as well as video shooting. With a relatively small 58mm filter thread, we expect it to handle well on all GFX bodies thus far released, and like all GFX lenses, also comes with a ‘WR’ label for weather resistance. The 30mm F3.5 will stop down as far as F32.

Lastly we have the GF 80mm F1.7. While more substantial-looking than the 30mm, it doesn’t look out of place on the (admittedly, fairly large) GFX 100. Its F1.7 aperture makes it the fastest lens yet for the GFX system, and it offers an equivalent focal length of 63mm. It comes with a minimum aperture of F22, has a 77mm filter thread, and of course, a ‘WR’ rating for weather-resistance.

Let us know what you make of Fujifilm’s latest lenses in the comments.

Nikon Announces the Nikkor Z 58mm f/0.95 S Noct, it’s fastest lens ever!

11 Oct

The post Nikon Announces the Nikkor Z 58mm f/0.95 S Noct, it’s fastest lens ever! appeared first on Digital Photography School. It was authored by Jaymes Dempsey.

Nikkor Z 58mm f/0.95 NoctNikon has just announced its latest Z-mount lens:

The Nikkor Z 58mm S Noct lens, which includes a whopping f/0.95 maximum aperture. The lens is slated to hit the shelves on October 31st, and it will debut with considerable hype, having snagged the designation as the fastest Nikkor lens ever made.

For those of us who have been waiting for Nikon to make good on its claims that the Z-mount’s 55mm diameter allows for the production of better optics, this new lens should give us a hint of what’s to come. But while the f/0.95 maximum aperture is eye-catching, is it actually useful? And will photographers actually be interested in this lens?

Let’s take a closer look.

While lenses with ultra-wide apertures are rarely small, the Nikkor 58mm f/0.95 sits on the other extreme, with a weight of nearly 4.5 lbs (2 kg). This comes from its aperture, the 17 lens elements, and a magnesium alloy construction. Of course, there are real benefits to all these features, such as higher optical quality and increased ruggedness. But is it worth the cost? For many, a huge benefit of mirrorless setups is the decreased size and weight. Yet this lens won’t be at all convenient to carry around. Plus, all that glass takes up a lot of space, which is why it’s packed into a 6-inch (15.3 cm) body.

Note also that an f/0.95 aperture will provide a very small plane of focus. And given that this lens only focuses manually to begin with, you may struggle somewhat to lock onto your subjects with speed.

The lens is primarily designed for astrophotographers and other night shooters (hence the ‘Noct’ designation). And for astrophotographers, the shallow depth of field won’t be a problem, as they rarely need to think about depth of field anyway. But ambitious portrait photographers may find themselves frustrated by the combination of a shallow plane of focus at f/0.95 and a manual focus lens, and anyone who tries to lock on subjects other than the night sky may come away from shoots without much luck.

Now, don’t get me wrong:

The Nikon 58mm f/0.95 is most likely an incredible lens, optically speaking. Nikon is promising amazing sharpness, and I expect this will be borne out in tests. I’m also impressed by the wide aperture, which will allow for unprecedented shooting in low light and at night. Astrophotographers, in particular, will like this lens, regardless of its size.

But at the same time, it’s hard not to wonder whether many other photographers will be interested. Especially because Nikon’s MSRP for this new lens is an incredible $ 7999.95 USD.

So now I’d like to ask you:

What do you think? Would you be interested in this lens? Will anyone buy it? Is there anything you would’ve preferred Nikon scrap or modify?

Let me know in the comments!

25 Sep

$ (document).ready(function() { SampleGalleryV2({“containerId”:”embeddedSampleGallery_7667143633″,”galleryId”:”7667143633″,”isEmbeddedWidget”:true,”selectedImageIndex”:0,”isMobile”:false}) });

Hasselblad has announced three new lenses and one teleconverter for its XCD lens system. The lenses are the XCD 80mm F1.9, the XCD 65mm F2.8 and XCD 135mm F2.8, all of which are designed for the X1D digital medium format camera. In all, this brings the system to nine focal lengths covering 21-230mm (16.6-178mm full-frame equivalent).

The standout lens for most users will be the XCD 80mm F1.9, which is not only the fastest lens currently in the X System, but the fastest lens Hasselblad has ever released. Offering a field of view equivalent to 63mm and depth-of-field equivalent to F1.5 on a 35mm full-frame system, Hasselblad claims that the lens comes with ‘superior optical surface precision’ on its aspherical elements to allow for smooth bokeh and a twin motor drive for quick autofocus.

At 1045g (2.3lb), the 80mm F1.9 is currently the heaviest lens in the XCD lineup.

It has 14 elements in 9 groups and, at 1045g (2.3lb), it’s currently the heaviest lens in Hasselblad’s XCD lineup.

Hasselblad has also announced the XCD 65mm F2.8, with a 51mm equivalent field of view. With a close-focus distance of 0.5m (20in), the lens is positioned as a versatile option for street and travel photography.

Lastly, the company has announced the XCD 135mm F2.8 alongside the X Converter 1.7. On its own, the 135mm F2.8 provides roughly a 107mm field of view and a close focus distance of 1m (3.3ft). The lens and 1.7x teleconverter were designed to be paired without any loss of optical quality, and together offer a 230mm (178mm equivalent) field of view, F4.8 maximum aperture and a minimum focus distance of 1.05m (3.5ft).

As with all current XCD lenses, the 80mm, 65mm and 135mm lenses come with built-in leaf shutters to allow for full flash synchronization up to 1/2000s shutter speed.

They are all available for pre-order now, and will begin shipping in December 2018. The 80mm F1.9 will retail for $ 4845 / £3690 / €3990; the 65mm F2.8 will retail for $ 2750 / £2090 / €2290; the 135mm F2.8 will retail for $ 4050 / £3090 / €3390; bundling the 135mm F2.8 with the X Converter 1.7 brings the retail price to $ 4845 / £3690 / €3990.

Press release:

Hasselblad expands its X1D lens lineup with three new XCD lenses, including XCD 1,9/80, Hasselblad’s fastest lens ever

Increasing the capabilities of the X1D-50c mirrorless medium format camera, Hasselblad adds three new lenses to its XCD lens family, including the XCD 1,9/80, with the largest aperture of a Hasselblad lens ever, the XCD 2,8/65 and the XCD 2,8/135 telephoto lens with X Converter 1,7. The three new lenses and one dedicated teleconverter expand the XCD family to nine different focal lengths.

The XCD 1,9/80 represents a major milestone for Hasselblad with an impressive f/1,9 aperture, Hasselblad’s largest lens aperture, offering an extremely shallow depth of field and light-gathering ability. Thanks to Hasselblad’s optical design expertise and rigorous calibration standards, the XCD 80mm boasts superior optical surface precision, avoiding poor bokeh results or out of focus highlights often seen in high aperture lenses with aspherical surfaces. The lens’ distinct twin motor drive provides quick autofocus performance, while offering a precise manual focus experience. Maximizing the artistic potential of X1D image makers for a stunning shooting experience with a field of view similar to 63mm on a full frame system, it is especially suitable for portrait, nature and product photography with its ability to produce pleasing bokeh through excellent subject isolation and shallow depth of field.

The XCD 2,8/65 is the ideal standard lens in any X System photographer’s kit. With a 50mm full frame equivalency, it’s designed to achieve the ‘normal’ focal length and mimic the human field of view. Thanks to its f/2,8 maximum aperture and 0.5 m (20 in.) minimum focus distance, the XCD 65mm is the versatile option for street, travel and general photography.

Growing the telephoto range, the XCD 2,8/135 and X Converter 1,7 expand the reach of Hasselblad’s X1D-50c. Available as both a paired kit or as a stand-alone lens, the XCD 135mm and dedicated teleconverter have been designed as a cohesive unit to ensure no decrease in image quality when the teleconverter is used. Without the teleconverter, the XCD 135mm has an aperture range of 2,8-32 and a field of view similar to 105mm lenses on full frame cameras and features a minimum focus distance of 1 m. With the X Converter 1,7, the lens’ focal length grows to 230mm (178mm full frame equivalent) with a f/4,8 maximum aperture and minimum focus distance of 1.05 m. The telephoto focal length is ideal for portrait, outdoor, and landscape photographers looking to document details and subjects with stunning image quality.

Like the other XCD lenses, the XCD 80mm, XCD 65mm and XCD 135mm feature an integral central shutter, offering exposure times from 60 minutes to 1/2000s with full flash synchronization through the entire range.

The XCD 80mm, XCD 65mm and the XCD 135mm lenses are now available for pre-ordering and will begin shipping in December 2018.

The XCD 80mm lens has an MSRP of €3,990, $ 4,845, £3,690, JPY¥ 576,000 (excl. VAT) / CNY¥ 38,500 (incl. VAT).

Meyer-Optik-Goerlitz: Again in the leading position for available light photography
Already in the 1920s, Meyer brought lenses to market which were the fastest lenses of their time: the Kinoplasmat 75/f1. 5. Later the Primoplan 1.9/58 was to become the fastest standard lens for the famous Exakta camera, which was sold in the USA as “Kine night Exakta”. At this time Meyer-Optik Goerlitz was considered as the most prominent manufacturer of available light lenses, so called “giants of light” and in 2016 the company presented the Nocturnus 0.95/50 mm for the first time now available in its third version.

Now Meyer is following the legacy of creating the fastest 75mm lens in the world like it once did with the Kinoplasmat. The Nocturnus 0.95/75 mm lens is a full format lens available for Sony E, Fuji X and Leica M. The company also intends to follow with a 35mm lens later in order to complete its Nocturnus line.

Main Features

1. The Nocturnus provides unsurpassed portrait images

Like its “little brother” – the Nocturnus 50 – the Nocturnus 0.95/75 delivers outstanding performance with a ully opened aperture 0.95 for Sony E, Fuji X and Leica M photographers.

With its aperture at 0.95 and its 15 steel aperture blades with antireflection coating the Noctunrus 50 delivers an appearance and imaging which cannot be obtained by any other lens. This opens creative opportunities especially in “people photography” under difficult light conditions.

2. 75mm focal length, 15 Steel Aperture Blades: #1 and Only in the World of Available Light Photography

World premier! 75mm focal length, 15 steel aperture blades along with a maximum aperture of 0.95 is only available in the portfolio of Meyer-Optik Goerlitz. This combination allows photographers who are using Leica M, Sony E or Fuji X to make use of the outstanding creative opportunities by the conscious use of depth of field, sharpness and bokeh. The 15 blades aperture was designed by Dr. Prenzel from Goerlitz and the mechanical components of the aperture are built by Otto Niemann precision mechanics from Berlin. Otto Niemann has been one of the specialists in the production of iris diaphragms since 1945. Of course, the aperture of the Nocturnus 0.95/75 is adjustable to infinty. The mechanical quality is outstanding and as a result the Nocturnus 0.95 / 75mm is a tool, that the photographer can rely on all his life.

3. Handmade Masterpieces

The Nocturnus 0.95/75 is a handmade masterpiece. Trained expert staff and state of the art technology make each Meyer-Optik Goerlitz lens a masterpiece in itself. Meyer-Optik Goerlitz employs a selected staff who put in all their experience and pride to produce a perfect Meyer-Optik Goerlitz Nocturnus 0.95/75. The company offers guided tours in its production facilities in Hamburg, Germany, to give customers an insight into the high production standards.

4. Photography at the speed of light

The combination of 75mm and the unique aperture of f 0.95 creates images of an unmet aesthetic especially when shot wide open, generating a three dimensional appearance where the subject seems to be stepping out of the image. The Bokeh is smooth and under the appropriate condition may contain some sharp edged light circles.

Each shot is of unique sharpness, depth of field and Bokeh characteristic.

5. Technical Specification

  • Focal Length: 75mm
  • Aperture range: f0.95 – f16
  • Mounts: Fuji X, Sony E, Leica M
  • Angle of view: 32°
  • Minimum Focal Distance: 0,9m
  • Filter Thread: 72mm
  • Elements/Glasses: 5 Elements in 5 Groups

This Lamborghini is ‘the world’s fastest purpose-built camera car’

25 Apr

A post shared by Nathan Garofalos (@nathangarofalos) on

If you like fast cars and expensive camera gear, look no further. What you see above is a Lamborghini Huracan with a $ 500,000 dollar camera gimbal attached to the front—a machine its creators have dubbed “the world’s fastest purpose-built camera car.”

Created by Incline Dynamic Outlet (IDO), a California-based company that usually specializes in aerial camera rigs, the so-called Huracam was built over the course of ‘many months.’

The frame for this elaborate setup is a $ 200,000 Lamborghini Huracan. Attached to the inside of the hood of said Huracan is a half-a-million dollar camera gimbal setup created by Gyro-Stabilized Systems (GSS) and fabricated to fit the vehicle by IDO. Inside the gimbal is a RED Helium 8K camera with the option to mount multiple lenses—a fittingly expensive camera for an unbelievably expensive camera car.

If you’re wondering how IDO was able to mount the gimbal inside the hood of the Lamborghini, it’s because the Huracan is a mid-engine vehicle. This means the massive 610-horsepower V10 engine sits towards the rear of the car, centered behind the driver and passenger seats, effectively turning the hood of the car into a trunk.

Unmodified, the Lamborghini Huracan has a zero-to-60 speed of 3.2 seconds and a top speed of more than 200 miles per hour. We don’t have the specs on how well it performs with the massive camera attached to the front, but it’s safe to say there’s a slight sacrifice in speed and acceleration.

Below is a gallery of Instagram posts showing off the Huracam in all its glory:

There’s no video captured with the 8K setup yet, but the first snippets shouldn’t be too far away. The team has already partnered up with Sharp Electronics for the first project with the Huracam.

At Mobile World Congress, the company is releasing the world’s fastest UHS-I flash memory card, the 400GB1 SanDisk Extreme® UHS-I microSDXCTM card, and demonstrating the future of flash memory card technology with Peripheral Component Interconnect Express (PCIe)-enabled cards, designed to deliver the performance required for the next wave of data and content-intensive applications.

Whether it’s exploring a new world in an immersive virtual reality app, or capturing 4K footage on a smartphone or drone, consumers can count on Western Digital to deliver even more robust mobile flash memory technology that offers them a premium experience on their favorite device.

The company’s new 400GB SanDisk Extreme UHS-I microSD card is designed to help consumers move their high-quality content faster than ever. At 160MB/s*, the new card is more than 50 percent faster than current SanDisk Extreme UHS-I microSD cards. The card is able to reach this unprecedented speed by leveraging Western Digital proprietary technology. The card will also feature the A2 specification to help launch and load apps at blazing speeds.

“Consumers expect an increasingly better mobile experience, and with our 3D NAND technology, we are pushing the boundaries of innovation to enable them to create and enjoy more rich content on their devices. Our expertise in flash memory and microSD card electronics enables us to achieve unmatched performance. The breakthrough SanDisk microSD card is evidence of Western Digital’s commitment to delivering more advanced solutions that enable data to thrive,” said Jim Welsh, senior vice president and general manager, Client Solutions, Western Digital.

Western Digital is also showcasing a new platform to enable the future of flash memory cards with a demonstration of its PCIe-enabled SD card. In anticipation of the next generation of high-performance mobile computing requirements, implementing PCIe technology will deliver the ability to read data files faster than today’s platform. Through Western Digital’s broad portfolio, this technology can now be demonstrated to boost the performance of SD cards. These speeds are essential for high-resolution content applications such as super-slow-motion video, RAW continuous burst mode and 8K video capture and playback. PCIe has traditionally been reserved for use in high-performance data center systems, where the single-lane PCIe Gen 3.0 standard specifications denote capabilities of achieving speeds of up to 985MB/s.2

At Mobile World Congress, Fira Gran Via Exhibition Center in Barcelona, Spain, Hall 3, stand number 3K33, Western Digital is demonstrating the world’s fastest UHS-I microSD card and PCIe-enabled flash memory card technology, as well as its new Western Digital PC SN720 and PC SN520 SSDs designed for responsive, always-connected user experiences on converged mobility devices.

Enabling the possibilities of data, Western Digital offers the industry’s broadest portfolio of products and solutions to help people capture, preserve, access and transform their personal content. For more information, visit our websites: WD and SanDisk.

Hasselblad unveils 135mm F2.8 for X1D, promises 80mm with fastest aperture yet

04 Nov

Medium format camera and lens maker Hasselblad has released its XCD lens roadmap for 2018, revealing the nine total lenses that will be available for X1D-50c shooters by the end of next year. Mainly, the company has added two new models to the system in the shape of a 135mm F2.8 with a built-in teleconverter, and what it is describing as an 80mm with the widest aperture Hasselblad has ever produced.

In addition, Hasselblad has altered the spec of its already announced 22mm wide lens. It will now come to market as a 21mm F4 after a slight change of plan in what Hasselblad says is a response to feedback from customers.

The new XCD 135mm F2.8 is due to arrive in the first half of 2018, and will come with a built-in 1.7x converter that will transform the lens into a 230mm F4.8. With the sensor of the X1D, this lens will deliver the same sort of angle of view we’d expect from a 110mm lens on a full-frame system, while with the converter that becomes just over 180mm.

The maximum aperture of the promised 80mm hasn’t been disclosed, but if it is to be the widest aperture Hasselblad has ever produced it will need to be wider than the F2 of the 110mm Planar T*. The company has said more will be revealed closer to the launch date at the end of 2018.

Aperture details of the forthcoming XCD 35-75mm zoom and the XCD 65mm have also been released, with the zoom varying between F3.5 and F4.5, and the 50mm-equivalent focal length coming in at F2.8. Prices are also to be released at a later date.

Press Release

Hasselblad expands the XCD lens range to a total of nine lenses in 2018

Hasselblad updates the XCD lens roadmap for the award-winning X1D-50c with the XCD 135mm and the 80mm lenses, rapidly expanding the XCD lens range to a total of nine dedicated lenses. By end of 2018 X1D users will have a wide range of lens options to maximize their creative vision.

The XCD 135mm f/2.8 lens comes with a dedicated 1,7x converter that extends the tele lens to 230mm f/4.8, while the XCD 80mm is set to become the highest aperture lens that Hasselblad has ever introduced.

In addition to these two new lenses, the previously announced XCD 22mm ultra-wide-angle lens has been updated to 21mm to meet the Hasselblad users’ demand for a better wide-angle lens experience.

Like the other XCD lenses, all new XCD lenses have an integral central shutter offering a wide range of shutter speeds and full flash synchronisation up to 1/2000th second.

Hasselblad is also releasing aperture details for previously announced XCD lenses: the XCD 21 ultra-wide-angle lens will feature f/4.0, the XCD 35-75mm zoom lens will have f/3.5-4.5, and the XCD 65mm lens will have f/2.8.

All new XCD lenses, besides XCD 80mm, are expected to be available during the first half of 2018, while the XCD 80mm high aperture featuring lens is planned for the second half of 2018.

The demand for the previously announced XCD 120mm macro lens and the XH lens adapter exceeded Hasselblad’s expectations, but the production is now being ramped up and orders are being fulfilled globally.

In addition to the nine dedicated XCD lenses, the XH lens adapter allows the X1D owners to use all twelve HC/HCD lenses.

Pricing and additional technical specifications will be provided closer to the availability of each lens. Specifications are subject to change.
