Disk Drill 4 makes it easier to recover Raw image, video files from damaged drives and memory cards

08 Oct

The macOS version of disk recovery software Disk Drill has received a major 4.0 update that adds, amongst other features, a dramatically improved ability to recover RAW image formats from drives and memory cards.

Disk Drill for macOS 4.0 is now ready for the latest versions of Apple’s desktop and mobile operating systems, macOS Big Sur and iOS 14. Using ‘state-of-the-art scanning methods and updated recovery algorithms,’ Disk Drill 4 can recover more than 400 different file types from drives with FAT32, NTFS, HFS+, and APFS file systems.

CleverFiles, the team that develops Disk Drill, says it’s ‘invested a lot of resources into researching and implementing unique search and recovery algorithms aiming bring back many raw images.’ Specifically, CleverFiles says it’s dramatically improved the ability to recover Raw image and video formats, including 3FR (Hasselblad), ARW (Sony), CR2 and CR3 (Canon), DNG (multiple mobile devices and cameras), GPR (GoPRO), HEIC (Apple), RLE (QuickTime videos), CVID (Cinepak), H263 and H264, MP4V, BRAW (Blackmagic RAW), CinemaDNG, Canon CRM, multiple MOV-container-based formats and many others.

CleverFiles specifically notes the success rate of being able to reconstruct Raw photo and video files has increased to 99% and 96%, respectively, compared to the respective 68% and 51% success rates with Disk Drill 3.8.

A breakdown of the success rate for recovering Raw image and video files from disks and memory cards compared to its previous version and competing products.

Other benefits of Disk Drill includes the ability to browse recovered files in real-time as they’re reconstructed, rather than having to wait for the entire disk to be scanned, and a secure ‘data shredder’ option for ensuring no data can be recovered from drives you’re looking to get rid of.

You can download Disk Drill 4 for free to try out basic functionality and to get familiarized with all the recovery methods, but if you actually need to recover files from a drive, you can pick up the ‘Pro’ version for $ 89. A single purchase is good for activation on up to three computers. Disk Drill has a great overview of all the new features on its website.

[MODIFIED] Disk Usage Utility – Display a Directory Tree Representation of What is Taking Up Hard Drive Space

29 Apr

Find out why your hard drive is running out of space by scanning it with TreeSize Free.

TreeSize Free for Windows can help you determine what is taking all your hard drive space by displaying a directory tree. After selecting a drive or folder for scanning by running the application or selecting TreeSize Free from a folder’s right-click menu, you can change options such as displaying a folder’s size, allocated space, usage percent, or file count. File size can be reported in gigabytes, megabytes, kilobytes, or a combination (“automatic units”).

Other features include sorting files and folders by name or size, showing details of each subdirectory inside a directory tree, and performing filters so only certain paths or files are visible. A report can be printed from the results. Options include forcing the application to only use one thread (if you are performing other CPU-intensive tasks simultaneously), displaying or not displaying compressed files and folders in blue, and choosing the gradient colors used in the background of each folder to represent disk usage….

[MODIFIED] Windows XP and DOS – Unix Du (Disk Usage Command)

01 Aug

This Windows XP – Windows 7 DOS replacement for the Unix du command determines the disk space used in various directories, and can output to CSV for import into Excel.

Most Unix operating systems come with a du command for users and system administrators to help determine which directories use the most space on a hard drive or other media. This is useful if file space is getting low and one needs to determine where to start looking for files to remove and/or archive.

The Sysinternals website, part of Microsoft TechNet, offers a free alternative to the disk usage command, and runs under Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 (not tested in Windows 8). Simply download the zip file du.zip, unzip the executable inside to your main Windows directory, and you can check disk usage via the command line:…

[MODIFIED] Disk Usage Utility – Export Folder Contents to TXT or HTML for Printing, with ID3 Tag Support

28 Dec

PrintFolders generates TXT or HTML files containing lists of directory contents for later distribution or printing.

For Windows users, while there is a free way to print directory contents, output customizations may take some work. Those who need more flexibility can try out PrintFolders, which generates TXT or HTML files containing the contents of a folder and its subfolders, or of all files on a drive. This file can be printed, shared, or stored with your backups as a file collection catalog. ID3 tags are supported, allowing you to record extra data regarding your MP3 music.

The output file can be configured: choose whether or not to include subfolders and limit the subfolder depth, toggle file extensions, support and display ID3 tags, limit files to those matching a filter, and include description headers for the folders. While the HTML output does not support stylesheets, you can change the background, title background, table border, text, and link colors, and a custom title may be supplied….

Photoshop Scratch Disk Help

04 Jun

The Photoshop scratch disk is your hard drive. Photoshop uses your hard drive as temporary “swap” space, or virtual memory, when your system does not have enough RAM to perform an operation. If you only have one hard drive or partition in your computer, then the scratch disk will be the drive where your operating system is installed (the C drive on a Windows system).

Setting Up Scratch Disks
You can change the scratch disk location and add multiple scratch disks from Photoshop Preferences. Many power users like to create a dedicated hard drive partition for the Photoshop scratch disk. Although Photoshop will function with a single scratch disk on the system partition, you can improve performance by setting the scratch disk to be the fastest drive in your system. Other useful guidelines for setting scratch disks are to avoid using the same drive where your operating system is installed, avoid using a drive where the files you edit are stored, and don’t use network or removable drives for a scratch disk.

Delete Photoshop Temp Files
If Photoshop is shut down improperly or crashes in the middle of an editing session, this can leave fairly large temporary files behind on your scratch disk. Photoshop’s temp files are typically named ~PST####.tmp on Windows and Temp#### on Macintosh, where #### is a series of numbers. These are safe to delete.

Clear Disk Space
If you’re getting an error message that the scratch disk is full, it usually means you need to clear some space on whatever drive is defined as the scratch disk in Photoshop Preferences, or add additional drives for Photoshop to use as scratch space.

Defragment Your Hard Disk
It is also possible to get the “scratch disk is full” error, even if the scratch disk drive has free space. This is because Photoshop requires contiguous, unfragmented free space on the scratch disk drive. If you are getting the “scratch disk is full” error message and your scratch disk drive does show a good amount of free space, you may need to run a disk defragmentation utility.

Scratch Disk Errors When Cropping
If you are getting a “scratch disk full” error when attempting to crop an image, it’s likely that you inadvertently have size and resolution values entered in the options bar for the crop tool, or you entered values in the wrong units. For instance, entering dimensions of 1200 x 1600 when your units are set to inches instead of pixels is going to create a huge file that could trigger the scratch disk full message. The solution is to press clear in the options bar after selecting the crop tool but before dragging a crop selection.

Any suggestions, ideas? Feel free to comment on this article!
