Nikon Z9 is in development

Earlier this month, Nikon officially announced its flagship Z-series camera, the Nikon Z9.

Designed for professionals, the Z9 will likely follow in the footsteps of the Canon EOS R5 and the Sony a1, both of which offer an unprecedented combination of high resolution, fast shooting speeds, class-leading video, and top-notch autofocus.

So while the Nikon Z9 will undoubtedly appeal as a mirrorless successor to the action-centric Nikon D6, the camera will also be suitable for event photographers, wildlife photographers, and hybrid shooters, as well as jack-of-all-trades professionals who require an all-in-one solution.

Nikon’s official announcement revealed little about the Z9 aside from its name, its release year (2021), and a few hints about shooting capabilities. The Z9 boasts 8K video and “utilizes a newly developed FX-format stacked CMOS sensor and new image-processing engine.” Nikon claims that the Z9 will serve up “the best still and video performance in Nikon history, meeting the advanced needs of professionals in a wide range of genres.”

But what else can we expect from the Nikon Z9?

Well, just prior to Nikon’s official announcement, Nikon Rumors published a series of Z9 specifications, and they are impressive. Take a look:

  • A 45, 50, or 60 MP full-frame sensor (likely 50 MP, according to Nikon Rumors)
  • A “D6 body combined with EOS R5 imaging, a9 II AF, and blackout-free EVF”
  • 20 frames-per-second continuous shooting
  • 8K/30p recording, as well as 4K/120p
  • Dual XQD/CFexpress card slots
  • “Improved noise levels and specifically significantly better dynamic range”
  • “Improved AF” and “‘stunning’ AF tracking (better than the D6)”
  • An ultra-capable electronic viewfinder, offering blackout-free performance

In other words, the Nikon Z9 will be a high-resolution, rugged, lightning-fast, and video-capable camera – the perfect all-around pick for serious professionals and very much in line with Nikon’s claim of “the best still and video performance in Nikon history.”

Regarding the release date:

Nikon Rumors suggests the fall of 2021, though you should be prepared for some delays thanks to COVID-related supply problems.

Nikon Rumors also claims the price will come in between $ 6000 and $ 7000 USD – expensive, yes, but fully compatible with Nikon’s D6-series pricing (you can currently purchase the D6, body only, for around $ 6500), and on par with the Sony a1 (which weighs in at $ 6500 USD).

Of course, for many shooters, the Nikon Z9 is unobtainable, or an excessive amount of camera, or both. But the Z9 isn’t just a new camera; it’s also a sign of Nikon’s dedication to its Z-series lineup and a look at the latest and greatest mirrorless technology (technology that may eventually trickle down into lower-priced models).

Canon purchases new supercomputer system to further its ‘no-prototype’ product development ambitions

Fujitsu Limited announced last week that Canon Inc. has ordered a new supercomputer. The purchase signals that Canon is progressing with its plans to develop products without the need for prototypes, thereby reducing development costs and increasing development efficiency.

The system Canon ordered includes a Fujitsu Supercomputer PRIMEHPC FX1000 unit. Canon has previously used Fujitsu PRIMEHPC FX10 and PRIMEHPC FX100 supercomputer systems. The new FX1000 unit includes class-leading technology from Fugaku, the world’s fastest supercomputer. Fugaku, a petascale supercomputer, was jointly developed by RIKEN and Fujitsu starting in 2014. Fugaku is scheduled to begin operation next year. When tested in June, it became the fastest supercomputer in the world. Fugaku has an expected theoretical computational performance of 648.8 teraflops.

Fujitsu Limited also announced that upon its completion, the supercomputer headed to Canon will play a critical role in Canon’s ‘no-prototype’ product development plans. The supercomputer will allow for ‘enhanced capabilities and scope of applicability of analysis in Canon’s product development process.’ Fujitsu and Canon anticipate the supercomputer to begin operations during the first half of 2021.

Canon’s ‘no-prototype’ initiative applies to the development of numerous products, including cameras. Canon is utilizing 3D CAD data in ‘analytical simulations to evaluate multiple facets of proposed products, including functionality, as well as ease of manufacturing.’ The PRIMEHPC FX1000 system, which includes 192 nodes, will allow Canon to produce larger scale analyses and simulations, including simulations with over 100 million total elements. The new system will also Canon to produce analyses of simulated airflow and electromagnetic waves.

In its coverage of this announcement, PetaPixel speculates that Canon is working hard to catch up to the fast and furious development cycle of Sony and its mirrorless cameras and that a new supercomputer can speed up Canon’s development cycles.

It stands to reason that if Canon can quickly simulate many iterations of a product it is developing rather than need to construct real-world prototypes, the revision process will be quicker. Further, leveraging a class-leading supercomputer may allow for deep analyses of products that may have otherwise taken Canon far too long or been outright impossible.

Ultimately, how the FX1000 supercomputer system will impact Canon’s product development cycles remains to be seen. The system should be operational in the first half of 2021, but of course, the development cycle of something like a new camera is quite lengthy.

Video: Caffenol film development from a coffee connoisseur’s point of view

There’s no shortage of videos on YouTube showing how to develop film using Caffenol, a broad name used to describe a homemade film development chemical that uses coffee, vitamin C, sodium carbonate and other ingredients to process film. Usually, it’s film photographers or analog aficionados making and sharing these videos, but in his latest video, coffee genius and 2007 World Barista Champion James Hoffmann shares his take on Caffenol development, sharing the experience from a coffee expert’s point of view.

As you might expect from someone so knowledgeable about coffee and its attributes, Hoffmann doesn’t settle for the instant coffee Caffenol. No, he goes all out with fresh-roasted beans and an elaborate recipe that requires him to pull nine double-shots of espresso that’s then filtered multiple times to replicate the instant coffee recipes you often find online.

After going through the recipe and development process, Hoffmann shares behind-the-scenes video of him capturing the photos on Ilford HP5 120 film in a Mamiya RB67 Pro S at a local roastery with the developed and scanned images overlaid on the footage.

Although the scans he shares aren’t high-resolution, they look about how you’d expect from Caffenol development of Ilford HP5 120 film. Overall, the 13-minute video is a wonderful watch with a unique look at the process we don’t often see in the photo world. If you’re a coffee fan yourself, do yourself a favor and subscribe to Hoffmann’s YouTube channel. He’s a wealth of knowledge and his calm-but-insightful videos have an almost meditative flow to them.

CineStill’s new developer kits make it easier than ever to creatively control slide film development

CineStill has introduced a new 3-bath processing system for slide film users that allows photographers a choice of three color and contrast profiles for the same type of film. Users can opt for a straight development to bring out the default characteristics of the film, or choose a tungsten balanced look or one with a warm tone and lower contrast. The Cs6 Creative Slide 3-Bath processing system allows photographers to get three quite different looks from the same emulsion by using a different developing solution.

The developers are part of a new 3-bath system that comprises a first developer that determines the color and contrast profile of the end result, followed by a combined the second developer and reversal process, and then a third bath that contains the bleach and the fix. CineStill claims the chemicals are easy to use and that temperature control is not as critical as in normal E6 processes, so successful home processing is much more achievable.

The three choices for the first developer are D6 DaylightChrome, D9 DynamicChrome and T6 TungstenChrome. The DaylightChrome developer is said to produce a neutral result with slightly enhanced color saturation and a usable dynamic range of 6 stops.

DynamicChrome produces a warm tone with enhanced contrast and color saturation but at the same time preserves highlight and shadow detail to offer a useable DR of 9 stops and extended exposure latitude. The TungstenChrome developer shifts the film’s color to correct for the use of warm tungsten lights saving the bother and light-lose of using a color-correction filter over the lens.

The one-liter kits contain enough chemistry to process 16 rolls or 100ft of film and are priced from $ 39 including all three baths, while the individual developers are available from $ 12.99. * ”Usable dynamic-range” is the amount of full stops of exposure value that renders acceptable detail and color. “Total dynamic-range” however, is the maximum range containing tonal separation rendering any detail, and is often twice the usable-dynamic range. The usable dynamic-range of conventional slide film is between 6-8 stops (total 14-16 stops). Color negative is between 9-13 stops (total 16-21 stops). Digital sensors are mostly between 7-10 stops (total 12-15 stops).

** Maintaining temperature is not essential beyond pouring in a 1st developer. When a temperature control bath is not available, simply preheat the 1st Developer +2ºF warmer, and the other baths will automatically process-to-completion as they cool down. Only the 1st developer is time and temperature critical because it controls contrast and color.

Canon announces development of EOS R5 with ‘8K’ video and 20fps shooting

Canon has announced the development of the R5 – a flagship RF-mount mirrorless camera capable of 8K video and 20fps stills shooting. Details are scant, but the new camera is expected to be released at some point this year.

Rumors have been swirling about an upcoming R-series camera for a while, and although we were skeptical about the ‘8K video’ claim at first, it seems that the R5 will, indeed, offer some kind of 8K video capture option.

Canon’s press release is rather non-specific when it comes to details, referring to the ability of photographers ‘to extract high-resolution still images from video footage as well as process 8K video into higher-quality 4K video’. As such, it’s possible that for practical purposes, the R5’s main selling point will be 2X oversampled 4K, but we’ll find out soon enough.

To natively sample 8K video (usually defined as 7680 x 4320 pixels) would require a 7680 x 5120 pixel sensor. This being the case, we can make a pretty good guess that effective resolution of the R5 will be ~40MP.

Alongside the R5, Canon is also teasing ‘9 RF lenses’ coming later this year, including a new telezoom – the RF100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM. Samples of the R5, the 100-500mm, and two new RF Extenders (1.3X and 2X) are expected to be shown at the CP+ show in Yokohama, Japan, later this month.

Canon announces development of the EOS R5 next-generation full-frame mirrorless camera and new RF series lenses

TOKYO, February 13, 2020 — Canon Inc. announced today that the company is currently developing the EOS R5 full-frame mirrorless camera—containing CMOS sensor, image processing, optical and other state-of-the-art technologies the company has cultivated through its long history of camera development. What’s more, during 2020, Canon plans to release a total of 9 RF lenses currently in development. Through the addition of competitive cameras and lenses to its lineup, Canon will continue to strengthen the EOS R System.

The EOS R System enables greater freedom in lens design thanks to a wider lens mount diameter, short back focus and high-speed system for transmitting data between the camera and lens, resulting in an imaging system that delivers higher image quality and greater ease-of-use.

The new full-frame mirrorless camera currently under development will fully leverage the advantages of the EOS R System to realize high-speed continuous shooting and 8K video recording and expanding the boundaries of visual expression. In addition, it can contribute to more efficient workflows thanks to improved transmission functionality, operability and reliability. These enhancements and more will help the new camera elevate the EOS Series concept of “Speed, Comfort and High-image-quality” to a higher level.

Canon’s EOS R5, the first of the next-generation full-frame mirrorless cameras in the company’s EOS R System, will include a newly developed CMOS sensor that makes possible such advanced features as high-speed continuous shooting—up to approximately 20 frames per second (FPS) using an electronic shutter and up to approximately 12 FPS using a mechanical shutter—to facilitate shooting of athletes at sporting events and other fast-moving subjects. In addition, the camera’s 8K video capture capability will enable users to extract high-resolution still images from video footage as well as process 8K video into higher-quality 4K video, opening up new possibilities for visual expression. What’s more, the EOS R5 will be the first Canon camera equipped with a high-performance coordinated image stabilization (IS) system that integrates the camera’s in-body IS with IS systems on attached RF lenses. The camera will also feature dual media card slots and will support automatic transfer of image files from the device to the image.canon cloud platform (to be available from early April 2020).

Alongside the EOS R5, Canon is also developing a total of 9 RF lenses scheduled for release during 2020, including the RF 100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM, Extender RF 1.4x and Extender RF 2x.

Sony releases Software Development Kit (SDK) for remote camera access

Sony has released a new software development kit (SDK) that allows third-party developers to control some selected Sony cameras. The SDK will offer remote access to key camera controls and still image data, including adjustment of shooting parameters, shutter release and a live view image.

The company says the decision to offer an SDK was made after ‘extensive interest in their camera lineup from commercial customers.’ Sony also believes this kind of camera control capabilities should appeal to companies from a variety of sectors, including security and entertainment.

‘The customer’s voice is absolutely critical to all aspects of our business,” said Neal Manowitz, Deputy President of Sony Imaging Products and Solutions Americas. “After receiving many requests, we’re excited to finally be able to open our platform in this manner. Companies will now be able to custom develop applications to control our cameras remotely, allowing them to take full advantage of the many innovations in Sony’s lineup including industry-leading autofocus, shooting speeds and much more. Ultimately, this gives professional clients the ability to create new and different imaging experiences unlike anything that’s been done before.’

Telemetrics Inc. is a company that specializes in robotics and camera control systems and one of the first to use the new SDK. One of its products is a weather-resistant camera housing unit on a remotely controlled pan/tilt head that is compatible with some of Sony’s full-frame mirrorless cameras. Customers include users in broadcast, production, sports and education companies.

To start with the SDK supports Sony’s Alpha 7R iV and Alpha 9 II high-end camera bodies but the company says it is planning to expand support in the future. Users of the current Camera Remote API will have to switch to the new SDK or look for other alternatives as Sony will close it down.

Sony Electronics Announces New Camera Software Development Kit (SDK) for Third Party Developers and Integrators

New SDK Enables Remote Control of Sony Cameras for a Variety of Professional and Commercial Application

SAN DIEGO – Feb 11, 2020 – Sony today has announced the release of a new software development kit (SDK) that enables third party developers and integrators to access control of Sony cameras.

Sony, the industry leader in both full-frame and mirrorless cameras, is releasing the SDK based on extensive interest in their camera lineup from commercial customers.

“The customer’s voice is absolutely critical to all aspects of our business,” said Neal Manowitz, Deputy President of Sony Imaging Products and Solutions Americas. “After receiving many requests, we’re excited to finally be able to open our platform in this manner. Companies will now be able to custom develop applications to control our cameras remotely, allowing them to take full advantage of the many innovations in Sony’s lineup including industry-leading autofocus, shooting speeds and much more. Ultimately, this gives professional clients the ability to create new and different imaging experiences unlike anything that’s been done before.”

With the new SDK, key camera controls and still image data captured will be available for remote access, including adjustment of camera settings, shutter release and live view monitoring. These control capabilities are appealing to the workflow of a wide variety of industries including security, entertainment and many others.

One of the companies that have a high expectation of Sony’s SDK is Telemetrics Inc., a company that specializes in robotics and camera control systems, selling complete packages including a weather resistant housing unit on a remotely controlled pan/tilt head compatible with select Sony full-frame mirrorless cameras. Telemetrics, Inc. sells to a wide variety of clients including broadcast, production, sports and education companies.

“Combining our expertise in robotics and camera control with the impressive capabilities of Sony’s Alpha camera technology will allow us to create some especially unique solutions for capturing live sports entertainment, which include the newly introduced PT-CP-S5 Compact Pan/Tilt Head and the WP-HOU-A9 Camera Housing unit,” said Michael Cuomo, Vice President of Telemetrics, Inc. “We’ve been thrilled with the results and are extremely excited at the potential for future integration with our systems.”

Initially, the Camera Remote SDK will support Alpha 7R IV and Alpha 9 II bodies, with plans to gradually expand the lineup of supported cameras hereafter[i]. The current Camera Remote API’s provision will be closed following this new release of the new Camera Remote SDK and its support will be terminated[ii].

Fujifilm teases development of X-Pro3 with titanium body, mini rear LCD, hidden display and more

At its Fujifilm X Summit in Tokyo, Japan today, Fujifilm announced the development of its forthcoming X-Pro3 and teased several new and intriguing features the rangefinder-like mirrorless camera will have.

The first detail Fujifilm noted in its presentation is that the X-Pro3 will be built with a titanium body, which will come in three colors: Black, DURA Black and DURA Silver. The standard ‘Black’ version appears to be painted, while the ‘DURA’ versions are coated in some manner. Titanium is a challenging metal to work with, but more durable and lighter than other metal alloys traditionally used in camera bodies.

Fujifilm also talked about the improved hybrid viewfinder in the X-Pro3. Inside the viewfinder is a new electronic viewfinder (EVF) that will offer higher resolution, higher contrast, wider-gamut color space, improved brightness and a higher refresh rate. Fujifilm also says it’s managed to decrease distortion and improve the angle of view inside the viewfinder.

Note the ‘Provia’ film stock icon shown on the compact LCD on the rear of the camera. This film stock icon will stay there and is dynamic in that the ISO rating in the icon changes as you change it on the camera.

Further switching things up, Fujifilm announced that it will be repositioning the standard rear LCD in favor of a compact LCD that is comparable to the top LCD on the GFX cameras, except on the back of the camera. In a neat little trick that nostalgia-seeking photographers will love, this compact LCD can also be used to show the film simulation in use, a nod to the days where you’d rip off part of the film package and place it in the mount on film cameras.

You’ll note we said reposition because, as Fujifilm demonstrated, the display is still there, it’s just hidden. Now, the main rear display sits on the back of a hinged panel, meaning you have to flip it down to navigate the menu or review images/video. Fujifilm says the repositioning of the LCD was done to ‘keep photographers looking through the viewfinder’ rather than ‘chimping’ at the back of the camera.

It’s an unusual approach and, while we can see it appealing to waist-level street shooters, we’ll have to wait to see what it’s like for other types of photography. There have been a lot of calls for an articulated screen on the X-Pro and X-100 series cameras, but we’re not sure this solution will satisfy everyone, either. It will, at least, create a more obvious distinction between the X-Pro and X-T series: with the rangefinder-shaped model being the one you shoot through the viewfinder.

‘Classic Negative’ will be the 10th film simulation Fujifilm has released.

Lastly, as has been rumored, Fujifilm its 10th film simulation called ‘Classic Negative’ that will resemble the look of Fujicolor Superia.

Despite being billed as a ‘development’ presentation, Fujifilm spilled quite a few details about its upcoming X-Pro3 camera system. The camera will officially be announced on October 23rd. Sigma launches its ‘Classic’ Art cine lens line, announces development of PL to L mount adapter

Sigma has announced a new line of cinema lenses, a new collection of Art Prime PL mount lenses with Cooke Optics’ /I Technology communication protocol and the development of a Sigma-made PL mount to L mount converter.

As it previewed back in July 2019, Sigma has launched its new line of ‘Classic’ Art prime lenses for cinematography. These new lenses are identical in design to its standard Cine prime lens collection, but feature different lens coatings to help re-create the aesthetic of lenses from the 1950s and 70s. The video example below, provided by Sigma, helps to show off the more ‘classic’ look:

Despite the identical optical design to the standard Cine primes, these new lenses feature slightly slow T-stops due to the different coatings. These new lenses also feature Cooke Optics’ /i Technology, which allows the lens metadata to be directly recorded to the camera with every frame, even as it changes mid-scene.

For better or worse, these lenses aren’t sold individually and are instead sold as a single ten-lens kit. So unless you’re a rental company or a happen to have six figures sitting around burning a hole in your pocket, these are probably out of reach for most film sets. The lenses will be available with the PL mount and ship by the end of 2019.

Speaking of Cooke Optics’ /i technology, Sigma’s existing Cine prime lens collection has been updated to include the additional metadata. The lenses will be sold separately from the previous version of Sigma’s Cine lenses, but not all hope is lost for those with the original version of the lenses. Sigma says:

‘For SIGMA customers who have already purchased a SIGMA PL mount lens, a new service to turn their lenses into /i technology compatible ones is under consideration.’

Lastly, Sigma has announced that it’s working on the MC-31, a PL mount to L mount adapter that can be used to mount PL cine lenses on Sigma’s own fp camera system and other L mount camera systems. Sigma doesn’t specify any information regarding pricing or availability for the MC-31 adapter.

Nikon shares D6 development teasers on social media before taking them down

Earlier today, Nikon Europe published a number of posts to social media teasing the development of its D6 camera, the not-yet-official next generation flagship DSLR from Nikon.

The posts, which were shared on Nikon Europe’s official Twitter and a Facebook account called ‘NikonLifeEU’, all teased the arrival of the D6 in text and included an attached video as well. As seen in the screenshots, shared with permission from Nikon Rumors, the two Twitter posts read:

The Facebook post also shared a video, but read:

The newly announced #D6 development will reinforce Nikon’s DSLR’s advantage in sports photo journalism. Top Pro and #D5 user Joel Maryland talks about how Nikon’s cutting edge technology has helped him stay ahead of the game. Stay tuned for more from #Nikon!

As noted by Nikon Rumors reader br0xibear, the video posted alongside the text wasn’t new footage, but a video of Nikon Europe ambassador Joel Marklund talking about shooting with the Nikon D5 at the Olympics. So, while there was no explicit mention of the D6 in the video, the text is very clear a Nikon D6 DSLR is on the way.

We have contacted Nikon to confirm whether or not the ‘NikonLifeEU’ Facebook page is its official account, but considering it too removed the development teasers and the rest of its post history mirrors the official Nikon Europe Twitter account, it seems likely to be the case.
