Google demos technology that scrubs objects from photographs

19 May

During its I/O 2017 conference yesterday, Google demonstrated a new algorithm-based technology that can remove unwanted objects from existing photographs. The demonstration showed the technology removing a chainlink fence from the foreground of an image, with the final result offering no discernible indications that the fence had ever existed (around 10:45 in the video below).

The technology was demonstrated on stage by Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai during a conversation about the company’s expanding visual technology. ‘Coming very soon,’ Pichai explained, ‘if you take a picture of your daughter at a baseball game and there’s something obstructing it, we can do the hard work and remove that structure and have the picture of what matters to you in front of you.’

It looks to be an evolution of the research Google and MIT have been collaborating on for some time – in fact, their demonstration from 2015 includes a very similar chain-link fence demo. This method takes advantage of the parallax effect to identify and remove obstructions from photos.

Unfortunately, Pichai didn’t elaborate on when this technology will be made available aside from ‘very soon,’ nor did he specify where the technology will be available. Given the company’s Google Photos announcements, however, it seems likely the technology will be implemented within that product.

Waterbird demos world’s first bendable Multi-Slider

17 May

Photo Gear News has a hands-on video of Waterbird systems’ Multi-Slider, which the company touts as a world’s first. The slider can easily go from linear to curved, and users can make fine adjustments to the curve using an allen wrench. Each segment of the track has a tripod mount in order to keep things stable.

An included motor moves the camera smoothly along the track, while a controller lets the photographer define the positions, speed and acceleration for camera movement. The controller can also be controlled remotely from a mobile device.

The Multi-Slider comes in three sizes: 80cm, 120cm and 150cm, and Waterbird can produce custom sizes, as well.

Pricing has yet to be announced.

Sigma demos WR Ceramic lens filter strength with impact test

26 Jan

In a newly released video, Sigma tests the strength of its protective ceramic lens filters in an impact test. Putting claims of toughness to the test, the video shows a 49g / 1.7oz metal ball dropped from a height of about 1.3m / 4ft onto the WR Ceramic Protector as well as three competing lens filters. While the ceramic protector survives unscathed, the competition isn’t so lucky.

In addition to its WR Ceramic Protector, the video features a ‘conventional protector,’ ‘Brand A Chemically Strengthened Glass Protector,’ and a ‘Brand B Chemically Strengthened Glass UV Filter.’ According to Sigma, the WR Ceramic Protector is 1000% stronger than a conventional protector and 300% stronger than a chemically strengthened glass filter. The ceramic filters are also scratch-resistant with a water-repellant coating.

Sigma has a half dozen new WR Ceramic Protectors available now:

  • 67mm for $ 93 USD
  • 72mm for $ 108 USD
  • 77mm for $ 118 USD
  • 86mm for $ 202 USD
  • 95mm for $ 247 USD
  • 105mm for $ 315 USD

How Does a Blind Person Use Instagram? This Blind Instagrammer Demos

03 Jan

What if your camera could talk to you? That’s exactly what Tommy Edison’s can do.

Tommy has been blind since birth, but he uses Instagram on the regular. In fact, he has over a thousand followers!

It’s all thanks to the Accessibility setting on his iPhone, a setting that dictates to him what’s on his screen. With it, he can shoot, pick filters, add a caption, and read comments.

You might be wondering why a blind person would use Instagram if they’re not able to see their photos. It’s pretty much the same reason those of us with vision do!

Through it, Tommy’s able to document and share his daily life with friends and fans. In a way, he even gets to “see” his photos through the feedback he gets.

Pretty amazing, right?
