Plugable´s new docking station offers Thunderbolt/USB-C compatibility and 100W power delivery

11 Jan

If you’re using a laptop out on the road but want the luxury of a workstation setup back at base, a docking station is the way to go.

Plugable has now launched its latest TBT3-UDZ model which works with any USB-C or Thunderbolt equipped laptop on the market. It allows for the connection of up to two additional 4K displays via either HDMI or Display Port, without using any external adapters. Plugable says its new model is the first Thunderbolt 3 docking station to offer this functionality.

Thanks to a total of 14 ports, for video, audio, SD/microSD and ethernet, you should not have any trouble connecting multiple input devices or peripherals. The TBT3-UDZ is built around the Intel Titan Ridge chipset which enables dual Thunderbolt/USB-3 compatibility and makes it an interesting option for those using multiple types of laptops.

At 100W power delivery is the highest charging wattage to be implemented in the Plugable lineup line of docking stations which, according to the company, makes the TBT3-UDZ an ideal choice for users of some of Apple’s latest laptops, such as the 16″ MacBook Pro, which come with 96W chargers. The Plugable TBT3-UDZ will be available for $ 299 in spring 2020.

DJI announces price and delivery date for Ronin-S gimbal

06 Jun

Chinese drone manufacturer DJI has announced that the Ronin-S, its first single-handed stabilizer, will be available from late this month at a cost of $ 699. The company says it is taking pre-orders now via its own store and at authorized resellers around the world.

The Ronin-S is designed to support cameras as large as the Canon EOS 5D IV and it will be able to carry up to 8lbs of camera and lens. It comes with a number of innovations including the ability to compensate for trombone zooms, a Push Mode that lets users adjust the pan, tilt and roll balances while the gimbal is still on, and a battery that DJI claims will last for up to 12 hours of shooting.

Despite early appearances, when released the Ronin-S will be fitted with a standard Manfrotto style quick release plate, and the whole rig will be controllable via the DJI Ronin app on a smartphone or with the optional Focus Command Center.
For more information see the DJI website.

Press release:

DJI Reveals Pricing And Availability Of Ronin-S

DJI’s First Single-Handed Stabilizer Offers Professional Quality At A Competitive Price

DJI, the world’s leader in creative camera technology, today revealed the pricing and availability of the Ronin-S, DJI’s first single-handed stabilizer for DSLR and mirrorless camera systems. The Ronin-S will retail for $ 699 USD with pre-orders beginning May 29 at www.dji.com, DJI flagship stores and authorized dealers worldwide, with shipments starting in late June.

About the Ronin-S
Utilizing DJI’s powerful three-axis gimbal technology, the Ronin-S delivers smooth, shake-free video and crisp photos, adding a cinematic and professional look to your work.

Powerful high-torque motors support a payload of 8 pounds to accommodate the most popular camera and lens combinations including the Canon 1D and 5D, Panasonic GH and Sony Alpha series. Its stabilization system compensates for zoom lenses with external zooming barrels and higher magnification ratios, while its advanced stabilization algorithms work with both in-camera and in-lens optical stabilization technology. When mounted to a vehicle, the maximum operation speed has been tested at 47mph with a Panasonic GH5 and 50mm lens utilizing an optional top hotshoe bracket.

Capturing stabilized video has never been easier because the Ronin-S was designed for easy setup and use. A new Push Mode lets you adjust the pan, tilt and roll axis by hand while the Ronin-S is powered on and an Auto Tune function automatically adjusts the strength of the motors to speed up gear prep so you can spend more time filming and less time setting up your gear. The Ronin-S has a comfortable, ergonomic design that helps capture smooth cinematic movements from upright to flashlight mode to underslung positions without obstructing the camera’s display. Ronin-S also features DJI’s intelligent battery system that is built into the handle and has an operating time of 12 hours.

The high-precision joystick changes the camera position to help frame your shot perfectly while a host of dedicated buttons allow operators to control various settings such as toggling between SmoothTrack profiles or to begin and stop recording.* An included Focus Wheel can be mounted to either side of the handle via the 8-pin ports on each side and a new Sport mode allows seamless transitions to fast movements with tight and quick subject following speed.

Harness intelligent shooting modes and advanced customization on the Ronin-S through the DJI Ronin mobile app such as creating complex camera moves automatically like Panorama, Motionlapse, Timelapse and Track that lets you designate specific camera positions in a scene and rotate between them on demand. Operators can also change SmoothTrack settings including the Speed, Acceleration and Deadband for each axis, save them in three profiles and toggle between them with the dedicated M button on the Ronin-S. Vital camera settings can be directly adjusted via the Ronin app and the optional Focus Command Center accessory allows for quick changes when needed.*

Ronin-S uses an industry standard Manfrotto quick release system and is compatible with a variety of DJI Pro Accessories to capture any scene and expand your creative freedom on set or on location. Supported optional accessories include a Focus Command Center consisting of a menu screen allowing for advanced gimbal, camera, and focus control without a mobile device; DJI Force Pro; DJI Master Wheels; the Ronin 2 remote controller; and an external focus motor for manual lenses that pairs with the included Focus Wheel. The Ronin-S can also be used with the DJI vehicle mount, jib mount and the dual-handle system for when an added level of comfort and stability is required.

The Ronin-S firmware that supports camera parameter control will become available in early July.

Reading Coaster: NYC Public Library Installs Tiny Book Delivery Trains

02 Oct

[ By WebUrbanist in Design & Fixtures & Interiors. ]

book-trains

A crafty conveyor system helps bring up books from a series of research stacks and storage spaces hidden beneath Bryant Park, making the volumes accessible via a system of miniature trains.

This particular branch of the New York Public Library in the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building houses millions of volumes, many of which are stored below the ground.

book-train-in-motion

This book train system looks a bit like a tiny roller coaster and is used to transfer materials seamlessly, quickly and automatically along the vertical-and-horizontal track system, carrying requested books directly to places like the Rose Main Reading Room.

vertical-book-delivery

Each cart (of which there are 24) can hold 30 pounds of reading materials and can climb 11 stories within the building to service various floors.

A pivot joint between the book-carrying basket and the main body of the cart allows the former to remain upright without spilling its contents while the latter tilts up to 90 degrees, carrying books straight up between levels.

The Brave New World of Robotic Pizza Delivery is Almost Here

19 Jul

[ By SA Rogers in Gadgets & Geekery & Technology. ]

robot food delivery

Thus far, the 21st century has been pretty disappointing for those of us who grew up expecting flying cars, teleportation devices and recreational trips to the moon by the time we were adults. While there were some things sci-fi films like Back to the Future got right – including video calls, flat-screen televisions, wearable technology and biometrics – nobody short of a billionaire villain type actually has a robotic butler that can bring them food at the push of a button. But if you live in London, you will soon be able to access the next best thing: dinner delivery via a six-wheeled droid.

food droid 2

Starship Technologies, which is run by two Skype co-founders, is partnering with London food delivery startups Just Eat and Pronto to send what essentially look like wheeled coolers through the streets, dropping off meals to customers within a 2-3 mile radius. Tests will also be carried out in Dusseldorf, Germany, and in Starship’s home city of Tallinn, Estonia. This is on top of 5,000 miles of previous testing in places like Glastonbury, where the bots have “met over 400,000 people without a single accident,” but this is the first time they’ll be delivering food to actual paying customers. Starship is expected to announce rollouts in the U.S. in the coming months.

robot food delivery 4

Is it really the next best thing to a robot butler, though? The first question that pops into many people’s heads when reading about this technology is whether somebody can just kick that self-driving droid around a little bit and steal your food for themselves. It’s a fair question. Starship says for these first test drives, the bots won’t be fully automatic – the company will monitor their progress remotely and take over if anything goes awry.

robot food delivery 3

food droid

The zero-emissions delivery bots sense obstacles in their path and navigate around pedestrians, getting out of the way as necessary, as seen in the video above. Not just anyone can access what’s inside, either. The customer who ordered the food has to use an app on their phone to open it, ensuring that the robot doesn’t just roll up to somebody else who lives in your apartment building and give them your pad thai.

Robotic Delivery: 6-Wheeled Drones Set to Roll Out in London

20 Nov

[ By WebUrbanist in Technology & Vehicles & Mods. ]

drone bots streets london

With all the focus on flying drones, grounded versions can fly under the radar, like the bot driving this latest business from the co-founders of Skype. Facilitating robotic deliveries in London, Starship Technologies aims to advance driverless automation in smaller steps, beating autonomous car companies to getting driver-free wheels on the ground in England.

drone real street delivery

The little driverless electric vehicles that will be making the rounds are six-wheeled rovers just over 20 inches tall and able to be packed with a sizable load of goods for short shipments.

drone on sidewalk

Customers simply select items online, pick from delivery windows, then track progress on an app and tap on their logged-in device to open the lid when their shipment of stuff arrives.

drone open hatch

Cruising at just four miles per hour, it remains to be seen how they will handle even sidewalk foot traffic, let alone road crossings. Its creators also presumably anticipate that a watchful public (and CCTV cameras) will help keep the little drones safe on their journeys. However, the bots can also directly relay distress signals to the police in an emergency or be remotely operated by human pilots as needed.

drone london open

They also come with an antennae that both helps with wireless connectivity but also provides visibility beyond each drone’s natural height.

drone neighborhood deliveries

“Our vision revolves around three zeroes – zero cost, zero waiting time and zero environmental impact,” say the founders. “We want to do to local deliveries what Skype did to telecommunications.”

drone bot delivery vehicle

So far the robots have only been tested indoors (interoffice experiments), but the company aims to hit the streets (or at least sidewalks) next year.

drone remote delivery street

It is in many ways an attempt to solve the ever-vexing ‘last mile’ problem: “The last few miles often amounts to the majority of the total delivery cost.”

drone robot delivery service

“Our robots are purposely designed using the technologies made affordable by mobile phones and tablets – it’s fit for purpose, and allows for the cost savings to be passed on to the customer.”

Mole Delivery: Automated Pipelines to Ship Goods Underground

30 Jun

[ By WebUrbanist in Conceptual & Futuristic & Technology. ]

mole underground delivery network

In a world obsessed with aerial drones, this new system could fly in under the radar and revolutionize shipping, delivering goods automatically via unmanned vehicles using magnetic wave propulsion through subterranean tubes. We are used to transporting liquids in bulk below ground – including water, waste and fuel – at its simplest, this system proposes doing something similar with solids, but the effects could revolutionize supply chains locally and globally.

mole cargo units intermodal

Like pneumatic tubes or underground trains of the digital age, the UK-based MOLE system is automated and secure from one end to the other, able to carry two pallets and tap into paths for existing underground transit and service infrastructure. Costs of this system are estimated to be as little as 10% of traditional above-ground shipping methods, and the pallet-based system makes the approach compatible with other intermodal systems including freight shipping containers.

mole solutions pallet offloading

The company boasts the potential of the system on green as well as efficiency fronts, including low energy usage and environmental impact as well as 24/7 unmanned operations, automatic loading and unloading. There are also subtler benefits, like reducing road congestion on the streets above.

mold test rail system

MOLE has also already run a series of tests and is aiming to first deploy in the realm of industrial shipping, helping mines and factories connect raw and finished materials with target buyers and refiners. Eventually, the goal is to create smaller business-to-business connections on a commercial scale.

mole shipping container unit

From from MOLE: “Mole Solutions is currently developing cost-effective, safe and environmentally friendly underground freight pipelines for solid cargoes. The system is designed to integrate with existing supply chains and transfer some of the high volume of products that travels by road into capsules running in pipelines laid beside or under existing and planned transport infrastructure.”
