Okay. So you’ve taken your landscape photos and you are back at the computer with your RAW files, ready to start editing in Lightroom. Before you do, you may want to watch this video by Mark Denney, so you can learn 5 handy tips for mastering contrast in your landscape photos.

You can achieve varying levels of contrast in a number of ways. See which sliders make the most impact and how they work to boost and drop contrast levels to different degrees. In some scenarios, you may want to enhance contrast, when light is flat, for example. At other times, such as when there are already severe contrasting light levels, where you may need to pare it back.

Street photographers often love the type of light many others seek to avoid. High contrast lighting is favored by many because of the drama it adds to the action, or lack of it, in the streets.

Making the most of high contrast lighting is a matter of being able to see it more as your camera does. It also helps to have a good knowledge of how you can manipulate your photos during post-processing.

Seeing like your camera

Your eyes can see a wider range of tone than your camera can. This is changing as camera technology advances. Soon cameras will be able to record more details in the highlights and shadows over a broader range. For now, your eyes are more capable.

What you see on your camera’s monitor when you review a photo is different than what you’ll see on your computer. On your camera, you will not see so much depth or detail. Learning to discern what your photos will look like after some post-processing will help you take better photos.

Taking photos knowing how you will process them later helps you make better decisions while you’re taking photos. The choices you make about exposure and composition can depend on what treatment you will give a RAW image on your computer.

When you look at a high contrast scene, your eyes will see more detail than your camera is able to record. Because the difference between the light value of the highlights and shadows is so vast, your camera cannot record it all. But your eyes will still be able to see it.

Understanding this when you are in high contrast light will help you make better photos.

Expose with intent

Photographing in hard light means you must make careful exposure choices. Do you want to see details in the highlights? Do you want to see details in the shadow areas? You must choose if you want to make the most of the dramatic lighting.

Exposing for the highlights and letting the shadows fall into black is one of the most popular methods. This adds drama and mystery to your street photos.

I prefer to set my exposure manually. This way I know it will not alter until I change the settings myself. I will choose a light area to make a meter reading from. Then I will underexpose it a little to make the effect a little more dramatic.

This will make the shadow areas appear even darker. It also means I am less likely to have bright areas with no detail.

Setting my exposure in this way, I know I’ll be able to push the contrast effect even further during post-production.

If you set your camera to expose for the shadows, the highlight areas will be even brighter. You will lose detail in the lightest parts of your composition. Sometimes you will want this and to keep the details in the shadows. You must make a conscious choice when you are setting your exposure. If you get this wrong, you will find you cannot manipulate your photos so much during post-processing. This is more so if you are taking .jpegs rather than RAWs.

Make use of the shadows

You can hide things in the shadows. You can conceal people or unwanted distracting elements in the darkness of a shadow.

Careful use of shadows can isolate your main subject and draw the viewer’s eye to it.

Use graphic lines of shadows created by architecture, trees or other strong forms. The shadows themselves become graphic elements in your photographs. You can combine them with the solid forms in your composition to create tension or harmony.

Look for how static and moving shadows appear in your compositions. What do the shadows of people look like on the pavements or walls as they walk by? Are there shadows created by trucks, buses or cars passing by? Can you see light reflected off windows back into the shadows?

While you’re out with your camera, think about how the shadows might look when you add more contrast during post-processing.

Find a location and choose your time

Observe how the daylight looks at the places you like to photograph. It will be different at various times of the day and during different seasons.

Look at how the shadows fall on the ground and surrounding buildings. Are people walking in the sunshine or in the shade? At which points to they emerge from the shadows? Is the light in front of them or behind?

Pick a good place to work from and stay awhile. If you can visit the same location on many different occasions, you’ll build up a more diverse set of photographs. Doing this, you’ll be able to compare the photos you take. This can help you learn your favorite time to photograph at that place. Then plan to do it again and take even better photos.

Find a place where the light is how you like it and the background is interesting. Make sure the background will support the style of photograph you are wanting to take. Is the background in full sun or in the shadows? Is the light falling on it pleasing to you?

Move around and look at the space from different angles. Where you photograph from will look different depending on where the sun is. You might prefer the sun behind you or to one side. Some scenes may look better when your subjects are backlit. These should be carefully made and not left to chance.

If you are including people or traffic in your photos, be observant of how it is moving. Anticipate where it looks best. How does the light look on a person as they walk through your composition? Does the traffic moving in one direction look more interesting than traffic moving the other way?

Once you have decided on a place to work from, stay there. Being patient is one of the most important things to do as a photographer. Wait and watch. Look for patterns of movement and also when these patterns are interrupted or broken. These can be some of the most interesting times to take street photographs.

Conclusion

Look at the sunlight and think about how you can post-process to enhance the look you want.

With street photography, you are reliant on the available light. You must look at it and figure out the best place to stand. Then you must make the right choice of exposure settings to take advantage of the high contrast.

Once you have found a good location and made a few exposures hang around. Give yourself time and space to really work a scene. Try going back to the same location at different times of the day and in different seasons. You may be surprised at how different your photographs will look.

Some iPhone X users report major display color and contrast changes in iOS 12

Apple officially released iOS 12 to the public on September 17 and reports from users are rolling in. According to a post on Reddit’s Apple subreddit, some iPhone X users are less than happy with the new operating system, after experiencing decreased display contrast levels, slightly desaturated colors, overexposed black regions, and more.

The post, made by user “shannister”, claims the display changes appeared after updating to iOS 12. “Experiencing a slightly washed out screen, colours popping less and blacks appearing more greyed out,” the post states. Several other users report similar experiences,

One poster going by the name “RandomUser9785” states, “The OLED panel on the iPhone X had such wonderful colours and contrast on iOS 11. After the iOS 12 update, the colours and the contrast have been ruined on my iPhone X.”

An ongoing thread on the MacRumors forum contains dozens of reports and complaints following the public iOS 12 release.

Some users report the Accessibility contrast feature being enabled automatically after updating, requiring them to manually disable it. This doesn’t eliminate the problem, however, according to at least one user who says toggling the setting wasn’t effective. The issue is reportedly present on both the iOS 12 interface and within apps.

This isn’t the first mention of washed out colors in iOS 12. Earlier this summer, iPhone X users reported issues with colors and contrast while using the beta version of the software. An ongoing thread on the MacRumors forum contains dozens of reports and complaints following the public iOS 12 release.

We’ve updated our iPhone X here at DPReview and while we haven’t carried out any controlled tests, we haven’t noticed any significant changes to screen experience in iOS 12. Apple has yet to comment on the issue, but if you’re experiencing washed our or subdued colors on your iPhone, let us know.

Contrast is one of the most important aspects of any photograph. It adds focus, distinction, and punch, and gives the viewer both a first impression of the image as well as a journey into its details.

At its most basic, contrast is defined as a difference. The most common types, which you’re probably quite familiar with, are tonal contrast and color contrast. In this article, I want to introduce yet another kind of contrast to your photography toolbox: conceptual contrast.

The photograph above has conceptual contrast. Can you figure out what it is? Conceptual contrast is different from tonal and color contrast; it’s more abstract and perhaps less obvious. It has to do with ideas and as the name suggests, concepts, not with physical aspects such as light levels or color.

Just like other kinds of contrast, conceptual contrast can add punch by bringing together things that you might not normally expect to see in the same image. It makes a photograph more interesting and raises questions about the contrasting parts of the image.

When it’s done well, conceptual contrast can help tell a story, function as an eye-opener, surprise the viewer, and jar them into considering their response.

Why should you use conceptual contrast?

Visual storytelling is a part of any great photograph. It’s how your photo goes beyond being just aesthetically pleasing, how you get people to stop and really look at your photograph, and how you create an emotional response in the viewer.

Conceptual contrast is not only a great way to add depth to your photographs but also an opportunity for you (the photographer) to learn to look at and become aware of your surroundings in a new way.

So how do you do it?

It takes some forethought and observation to create a photo with conceptual contrast. Coming up with an idea that works will be the hardest part; the rest is as easy or hard as taking any photograph. The steps I’ll be talking about focus on photography outside of the studio, but it can also be a very powerful tool for posed photographs.

The first and most basic stage is observation. You can find good material for conceptual contrast almost everywhere if you pay enough attention.

After finding something to capture, the second stage is developing the idea. Just because the contrast is obvious to you doesn’t mean that it will be to others.

It doesn’t have to be obvious, but think about how you want to take the photo to make it both interesting to look at and eye-opening to explore.

For the best effect, your photo should contain more than just the conceptual contrast. To bring the viewer in and give them a chance to notice and react to the less obvious aspects of the photo, you should use everything else you know about photography to make it stand out and draw them in.

The final stage is capturing your photograph. This is the technical part where your abstract idea takes physical form. After you share it with others, it will gain a life of its own as viewers enjoy your photo and interpret it from their own perspective.

How to Use Soft Light Blend Mode in Photoshop to Improve Exposure and Contrast

Do you have an overexposed sunny side and an underexposed shadow on the other side of your image? Or maybe a well-exposed photo that needs more vibrancy? There’s a tool so versatile that can help you fix any of these problems and more: the Soft Light Blend Mode.

What are Layers?

Imagine your photo as a printed one. Then you take a sheet of acetate and draw on it. Then you take another sheet and you put it on top of the others and obscure a part of it; and so on, and so forward. Each acetate sheet is a layer and you can make as many alterations as you want on top of your original this way.

To create layers in Photoshop you need to go to Menu > Layers > New. A pop-up window will appear where you can name your layer, choose the color, the blending mode and the opacity. When you click OK the new layer will appear on the Layers panel window on top of the background, which is the original image.

What is the Blend Mode?

The default setting of a new layer is normal blending mode. This covers the background or the layer underneath. However, Photoshop gives you the option of choosing a different Blend Mode, which changes the way your edit affects the pixels. You can change it in the pop-up window of the new layer.

In the case of the Soft Light blending mode it is similar to using the dodge or burn tool. In other words, every color that is lighter than 50% grey will get even lighter, like it would if you shine a soft spotlight to it. In the same way, every color darker than 50% grey will get even darker. However it will never reach pure black.

So, why not use dodge and burn instead?

First of all, when you work in layers you don’t lose any information. You can always discard the layer and start over because there is no damage to the original image.

With layers, you can change the opacity or transparency of each one, which allows you to control how evident your edit is in the final image. You will find the opacity tool on the Layers panel with a slider that goes from 0 to 100 %.

Note that there is another slider next to it called Fill. There are 8 blending modes in which these two sliders make a difference, however, Soft Light is not part of these “special 8” so the Fill opacity and Standard opacity have the same result when using this Blend Mode.

Another advantage is that you can change the blending mode of each of the layers. In this article, we are exploring the use of Soft Blend, however, each mode offers different possibilities. One blending mode can have different uses, here are three of them.

1. Add punch to your image

Increase the contrast and saturation to have more vivid colors and give a punch to your image. You can do this by duplicating the background layer: Menu > Layer > Duplicate Layer and changing the blending mode from normal to Soft Light. Finally adjust the opacity until you are happy with the result.

2. Gradient tool to balance the lighting

If you have an image that is underexposed on one side and overexposed in the other you can easily even it out with a Soft Light blend layer. First go to Menu > Layer > New Layer. Pick the Gradient tool and draw a line from the brightest side to the darkest one. The gradient will look like this:

Then change the layer blending mode to Soft Light and lower the opacity to find the best results.

3. Dodging and burning with a Soft Light layer

The past workflows altered the entire image, however, if you need to do a more precise job you can also do that using Soft Light. First, add a new layer with Soft Light blending mode like you did in the previous procedure. Only this time instead of the gradient tool, you are going to use the brush tool. When you select it you can choose the size of the brush on the top menu and the color on the bottom.

If you paint with black you will darken the image:

Painting with white will lighten certain areas, and with different shades of grey, you can also control tones of your image.

How to Take Control of Contrast Using Curves and Levels in Photoshop

Have you ever found your photos flat? The colors are muted and it just looks dull? That’s because it lacks contrast. Sometimes regardless of your best exposure skills, the conditions are not suited to get a wide range of tones. Not to worry though, it can be fixed in post-processing. I’ll show you my workflow for how you can take control of contrast in your images using Curves and Levels in Photoshop.

Of course, there are many ways to adjust the contrast on Photoshop, there’s even a tool called Brightness and Contrast, however, it doesn’t give you much control. What I like to do is to manipulate Curves and Levels. In this article, I’ll explain to you why and how I use these tools to boost contrast.

The issue of low contrast

Low contrast can happen for many different reasons; bad weather for example or photographing through glass. In any case, the resulting image doesn’t show a wide range of tones, in other words, there’s not enough difference between the lights and the darks.

I find this problem occurs especially while traveling, because you can’t go back to the location when the weather is better, or because you are seeing things through a pane of glass. For example, the image I will use for this tutorial was taken through the window while traveling on a tour bus.

How do you know it’s low contrast?

I chose an image where the contrast is clearly low so that you can easily see the effects of every step. However, in some cases, it won’t be as obvious, but you can always review the histogram to know the tonal range of your image.

A typically correct exposure should have a histogram that reaches from black (left) to white (right) evenly spread, with the highest values in the middle. Please note that this can change if you are going for a different effect like low key or high key where you purposely choose a specific range to work with, so I am just talking about the average image here.

As you can see, in this case, all the information is concentrated in the middle tones, but it doesn’t reach the black or the white side (see histogram below). This is why the image has no contrast.

Using Curves

First, we are going to manipulate the Curves tool. Remember to do it on an adjustment layer and not directly on your original (this is non-destructive editing), that way you won’t loose any information and you can always go back and start again if you don’t like the results. To do this go to the menu then: Layers > New Adjustment Layer > Curves and a new window will pop up.

Inside that, you’ll find a graph with the histogram on it. The line that crosses the graph controls the contrast; the steeper it is, the greater the contrast.

You can fix anchor points along the line that you can move up or down to adjust the contrast of the image. Add as many anchor points as you need. The higher right quadrant controls the highlights and on the lower left one, you have the dark tones.

If you want to increase contrast, as we do in this case, add one anchor point in the lower left quadrant and slowly pull it down. Watch how it affects the dark areas of the image. Move it until you’re happy with the result. Then add another anchor point in the upper right quadrant and pull it up slowly until the highlights are bright enough for your preference. By making the straight line into more of an s-curve you will add contrast to the image.

Note: if you have an image with too much contrast the opposite can work. Pull down the highlights, and push up the dark areas on the curve to get an inverted s-curve.

After fixing the curves for the overall image, this tool allows you to fine-tune by channel. The step we did before was working on RGB, however, if you click on the drop down menu you can choose each channel to work with separately.

In this case, let’s start with the Blue channel. If you pull up an anchor point from the highlights (the upper right quadrant) you are making the sky, which is the lighter part of the picture bluer. In the left lower quadrant (the shadows) pulling the anchor a little bit down allows you to remove some of the color cast.

Next is green channel so that you can get a wider tonal range out of the forest and nature of the scene. The adjustments are very subtitle because when you are working in such detail the tools become very sensitive. Move around the graph until you are happy with the result.

Remember different light sources have different colors;  a sunset has warmer colors than at noon, artificial light can be more yellow than natural light, etc. Apart from correcting any color bias, it works to add some special effects and get creative. In the next example, you can see what happens when the graph gets completely inverted in the red channel. You can also achieve this by playing with the different presets, in this case, color negative.

 

Using Levels

Next, you want to manipulate the Levels, also using an adjustment layer. You can do this by going to the menu > Layers > New Adjustment Layer > Levels (or you can find it on the Adjustments panel just to the left of Curves). Again a new window will appear with a different graph, this represents the darkest parts of the picture (0) to the lightest parts (255).

You can manipulate contrast by dragging the sliders underneath the graph, however, you will have much more control if you use the eyedroppers. This is how to work with them:

First, choose the white eyedropper (bottom one next to the graph) and click on the lightest part of the image that still has information or detail. You’ll notice how your entire image becomes lighter and brighter. Don’t worry about getting it right on the first try, you can click around on the image until you are satisfied with how it looks.

Then pick the black eyedropper and click on the darkest part of the image with detail. Same as the white one, try it until you get it right. You can always do some final adjustments with the sliders as well.

Finally use the gray (mid-tones) eyedropper to set the ambiance or mood of the scene, as it will change depending on where you click. Here some examples:

 

In Levels, you can also do the selective adjustments by channel if you need.

And there you go, when you are satisfied with your results, flatten the image by going to the menu Layers – Flatten Image. See how the histogram has a much wider range now, and the final image has more impact.

Handling reflections – example

Remember that when you are photographing through glass there might be reflections, and when you boost the contrast these reflections will be much more noticeable. So think about that before shooting, when you are composing your image.

In order to demonstrate this for you, I made a photo while enjoying a panoramic view from a skyscraper in Milan. It was a 360 degrees glass wall, so I was bound to have a reflection. In order to use it to my advantage, I decided to place my foot strategically so that its reflection would be in between two buildings and entitled the photo “Stepping into Milan”.

Dull weather – example

As I mentioned before, it’s not only shooting through glass that can give you low contrast scenes. Here I have another example that had to do with the weather. It was a very cloudy day so there were no shadows, everything looked kind of gray and the light was very flat. This too can be fixed with Curves and Levels following the previous steps.

Why does contrast work in photography?

Opposites work well together in an artistic sense, concepts like old versus new are good photographic subject matter. One of the simplest forms of contrast is black and white, which is why photographs that were taken in this style look so effective. The best black and white photos often have strong contrast which makes them stand out.

The aim of many photos is to isolate your subject, and by doing so, tell a story. The use of contrast is one way you can isolate a subject from the background, or bring out a strong repeating pattern in a texture photo. It’s also possible to have color contrast as well, but only certain color combinations work well together.

What is color contrast photography?

Getting color contrast is a bit more complex than it is with black and white photography. Color can be broadly split into two groups, cold colors, and warm colors. Color contrast happens when a cold color is paired with a warm color. You can also use complementary colors – that is when warm colors and cold colors (opposite on the color wheel) are in the same photo.

An easy way to visualize this is by looking at a color wheel, which shows colors that are opposite each other. It’s not uncommon to see color contrast occurring naturally in nature with things like fruits and flowers often displaying this concept. The classic color contrasts are yellow/purple, red/green and orange/blue. Using the color wheel can you come up with some yourself and apply them to your images?

Stark contrast: how your camera copes with dynamic range capture

Managing dynamic range is challenging. There are few things more disappointing than looking through the viewfinder of a DSLR at a colorful, vibrant scene, hitting the shutter then glancing at the rear screen only to see a JPEG image with clipped highlights, crushed blacks, or both.

Dynamic range limitations can catch you out at the most unexpected moments. In this instance, the yellow leaf is catching the light, clipping the green channel and meaning that its color is misrepresented.

There are two challenges that the camera faces: picking a tone curve that can include a wide range of the tones in the final image and choosing an exposure that captures this wide range of tones. As you might expect, all in-camera DR modes aim to address one or both of these issues.

The first challenge comes because cameras tend to use a single, fixed JPEG tone curve designed to make most images look attractively punchy when they’re viewed on the relatively low dynamic range of most monitors or prints. High contrast scenes can extend beyond the range of tones squeezed into these images, which results in the darker tones in your image crushed to black and your highlights being clipped, if you try to expose the mid tones of your image correctly.

Much of the problem is caused by the camera’s tone curve: a system that maps the brightness of tones captured in the Raw file to the brightness levels used in the final image.*1

Why don’t camera makers just use a lower-contrast tone curves? Because, although a flatter tone curve would make it easier to include the extra tones in high-contrast scenes, they’d leave the rest of your images looking drab and flat.

The second challenge comes from from the tension between choosing a short/dark exposure to retain highlight information and a long/bright exposure to capture the most light to keep noise levels low.

With time, patience and a relatively modern camera it’s possible to bracket a few shots to ensure you capture a Raw file with the highlights you want preserved, which you can then carefully process to pull the detail out of the shadows – effectively creating a tone curve customized to that specific image.

DR compression modes

But not every photographer has the time, knowledge or the inclination to do this. So most manufacturers include some sort of mode to capture and compress the wide dynamic range of high contrast scenes into attractive images.

There are two main methods of doing this. One is to use a different tone curve to brighten up dark tones in the scene, and prevent blacks clipping so readily in high contrast scenes. The other is to capture or retain more highlight information and use a tone curve that incorporates these additional highlight tones.

The best solutions do a bit of both.

Method 1: Adaptive tone curves

Adaptive tone curves are used to expand the range of tones in an image beyond the ones that a standard tone curve would include. They do this by selectively brightening up what would otherwise be the shadow and deep shadow regions of the image.

Many of these are based on the work of a company called Apical, whose algorithm increases the breadth of tones in the image (lowering overall contrast) by analysing each part of the image and brightening the shadows while working to preserve local contrast, so the overall image doesn’t look flat.

To demonstrate how this works, we’re going to use the tone flow diagrams we used in our articles about noise sources. These show the effect of changes in exposure, amplification and tone curve between the scene and the final image. Each element that changes is highlighted in red on the right-hand side of the diagram as you roll your mouse over the different states.

Because the darker tones in an image are made up from less light, their signal-to-noise ratios are worse: they look noisier. Brightening them up makes it easier to see this noise, so DR compression modes of this type generally work best on larger sensor cameras and exposures that capture enough light to keep the quality high.

Other than revealing a little more noise in the shadows, adaptive tone curves themselves only affect the JPEG, not the Raw – they are just selectively applying a different tone curve (or, better still, a localized, context-specific tone response) to incorporate or emphasize more of the tones your camera captured.

The other type of DR Compression method involves trying to capture a different set of tones, which usually means changing the exposure. Or, at least, changing which tones are captured and which are retained in the Raw file. This does change the Raw file.

The most basic of these systems change the exposure/amplification relationship of the camera. To understand what this means, it’s important to understand that final image brightness is made up of four components:

  • Illumination level of the scene
  • Exposure (Shutter speed and aperture)
  • Hardware amplification
  • Image tone curve (either in the camera or when processing the Raw file)

The ISO standard allows any combination hardware and software (tone curve) amplification, so long as the scene illumination and exposure give you the expected JPEG brightness*2. This means that there’s no fixed relationship between exposure, hardware amplification and final image brightness.

So, for instance, the camera can intentionally use a lower-than-usual level of amplification with your exposure so that highlight detail isn’t amplified beyond clipping, then use a different tone curve that retains these highlights. Such a tone curve would also pull its mid tones from deeper down the Raw file than in standard mode.*3

The dead give away that your camera is doing this is a jump in the minimum available ISO when you engage DR mode. Because the base ISO setting is already using the lowest level of amplification, you can’t have a lowered amplification/exposure relationship until you use a shorter exposure (higher ISO).

This pattern becomes more obvious if you look at the Fujifilm ‘Dynamic Range’ system, which, with its three DR settings (DR100, DR200 and DR400) offers three*4 distinct balances of exposure and amplification. This table shows a simplification of the amplification level being applied in the different DRng modes at each available ISO setting:

Using this method the DR modes do result in different Raw files. In the example above, the two files have different exposures, so the Raw data is different. In the example below, where both shots have the same exposure, the DR200 shot has been amplified less than the DR100 shot, so contains more highlight information.*5

With modern sensors that add very little read noise to their images, there’s little or no noise cost to using lower amplification levels and then using a tone curve to make up for it. The only noise differences occur if you’re shooting in bright light and you choose to switch from using DR100 mode at base ISO to DR200 mode and have to use an ISO 400 exposure. In this instance it’s the shorter exposure that’s adding the noise, not the different way of using the sensor.

Adaptive exposure and tone curve

The final method is essentially a combination of the two techniques: reduced exposure/amplification and an adaptive tone curve.

Panasonic’s iDynamic and Olympus’ Auto Gradation modes will both reduce exposure by a 1/3EV or so to capture some additional highlights, then use an adaptive tone curve to brighten the shadows and as well as adding highlights. But it’s probably Nikon’s Active D-Lighting system that does the best job of this. It combines up to a 1EV exposure reduction with an adaptive tone curve to give well balanced JPEGs even in high contrast situations.

Short of providing the tools that would allow photographers to reliably expose to the right, these DR compression modes provide a really useful means of accessing the impressive capabilities of modern sensors, whether you know how they work or not.

*1 Technically it’s actually a combination of a gamma curve that converts the Raw file’s linear brightness response into sometime more closely matching the human eye’s response, to make better use of the file’s bit depth plus the effect of the tone curve added to make the image look more punchy.

*2 Strictly speaking it no longer even guarantees this: the REI section of the standard only requires that the camera gives what the manufacturer believes to be an appropriate image brightness.

*3 To an extent, this is what many manufacturers already do in their standard JPEGs: use lower amplification and a more highlight-weighted tone curve than historically required, to capture and retain more highlight information. This creates a discrepancy between the ISO rating and the result of Raw saturation testing – as conducted by DxOMark.

*4 You could argue that Fujifilm actually offers four levels of exposure/amplification: their camera’s extended ‘ISO 100’ mode is based on the same amplification as DR100’s ISO 200 mode, but with less highlight capture. In many respects it’s a DR50 mode.

*5 Even though the DR200 and DR100 images have received different amounts of amplification, and hence have different Raw files, the use of different tone curves for each DR mode means that the JPEGs appear with the same parts of the scene rendered as middle gray. As such they’re both considered to have been shot at the same ISO.
