Ronkonkoma, NY – September 30, 2020 – The SIGMA 105mm F2.8 DG DN Macro | Art lens is the first prime macro lens designed by Sigma exclusively for full-frame mirrorless cameras, as the DG DN in the name indicates. Announced today by Sigma Corporation, this lens offers 1:1 magnification (life-sized) at a 5.5-inch working distance with internal focusing, and it is available in Sony E-Mount and L-Mount formats.

Exceptional focal plane sharpness with minimal aberration is achieved through a new optical formula featuring 17 elements in 12 groups with one SLD element. The lens design also features excellent peripheral brightness for pleasing bokeh, complemented by nine rounded aperture blades. The L-Mount version of the 105mm F2.8 DG DN Macro | Art lens is compatible with the SIGMA Teleconverter TC-1411 and TC-2011, increasing the maximum magnification to 1.4:1 and 2:1, respectively.

“In order to capture the minute details of small subjects, macro lenses must meet an extremely high standard of optical precision, and the new SIGMA 105mm F2.8 DG DN Macro | Art lens truly delivers,” says Mark Amir-Hamzeh, President of Sigma Corporation of America. “Whether you are shooting images of flowers, insects or just interesting objects around the house, the sharpness, bokeh quality and practical functionality of this lens will exceed the expectations of professionals and hobbyists alike.”

The Hypersonic Motor delivers smooth, quiet, confident autofocus in both close-up and portrait-distance settings, and the three-zone focus limiter switch allows for even swifter response when focusing exclusively in either the macro or more distant range.

The Sigma Art line has been consistently redefining both imaging excellence and satisfying handfeel, and this new lens continues that journey. The dust and splash-proof design, aluminum and TSC (Thermally Stable Composite) construction, a brass bayonet mount, plus well-damped switches and rings demonstrate the level of build quality that the Art name represents. The Aperture Ring can be clicked or de-clicked by flick of a switch, and the lens also includes an Aperture Ring Lock Switch function. Additional benefits include a programmable AFL button on the lens barrel, and compatibility with face and eye-detection autofocus.

The lens will begin shipping late October 2020. / MSRP: $ 799

digiKam 7.1.0 ‘maintenance’ bug fix update arrives with a few new features

10 Sep

Open-source photo management app digiKam is back with another update a little more than a month after launching its big version 7.0.0 release. This latest update largely revolves around ‘maintenance,’ but it does include a few relatively minor new features amid the numerous bug fixes.

With digiKam version 7.1.0, the team has expanded upon its basic Canon CR3 RAW metadata support, enabling the software to read a greater amount of Exif tags, including color profile and GPS data. The team explains that dealing with camera RAW files is a ‘big challenge’ due to, among other things, the lack of standardization.

DigiKam 7.1.0 features a metadata interface that was written based on the libraw library, expanding the CR3 read support. However, the app doesn’t feature write support for this particular RAW format. The full list of cameras support for libraw can be found on its website here.

The expanded CR3 support aside, digiKam 7.1.0 brings a new Batch Queue Manager plugin offering an automatic fix for Hot Pixels. This feature isn’t new; rather, the update improves it and enables the tool to ‘manage a collection of black frames from different camera models,’ according to the team.

The Batch Queue Manager has also received another new plugin, this one for applying textures to images. As with the Hot Pixels fix, this tool has already been available in the Image Editor, but adding it to the Batch Queue Manager makes it possible to automatically process target images.

Finally, the new digiKam update also brings expanded IPTC compatibility with UTF-8 characters encoding, according to the team, enabling users to use ‘extended characters set everywhere in legacy IPTC text containers.’

These tweaks and new features come alongside a slew of bug fixes, with the team saying they managed to close out more than 300 Bugzilla entries in the past couple of months. The full list of these bug fixes can be found here.

Work on digiKam 7.2.0 is already underway with a few features planned, including improved support for face management. The team says there are some beta releases coming up that will test new planned features. As always, digiKam is available to download for free.

Sony 12-24mm F2.8 GM arrives in August for $3000

07 Jul

$ (document).ready(function() { SampleGalleryV2({“containerId”:”embeddedSampleGallery_2784480657″,”galleryId”:”2784480657″,”isEmbeddedWidget”:true,”selectedImageIndex”:0,”isMobile”:false}) });

Sony has announced a new member of its high-end ‘G Master’ full-frame lens series: the 12-24mm F2.8. It’s currently the widest F2.8 constant zoom offered for full-frame, with a hefty price tag to match: $ 3000.

The 12-24mm is dust and moisture-sealed and weighs in close to two pounds (847g / 1.9lb to be precise). It’s a bit larger than Sigma’s 14-24mm F2.8, measuring 97.6 x 137mm. With such a large front element, the 12-24 provides a rear filter holder.

Optical construction includes three XA Extreme Aspheric elements (including the largest that Sony’s ever made), two Super ED and three ED elements, as well as one aspherical lens element. Nano AR Coating II is used, along with a fluorine coating. Four XD linear motors move two focus groups – either together or independently – and focusing is silent. The lens uses a nine-blade aperture, and minimum focus distance is 28cm / 11in throughout the zoom range.

The Sony 12-24mm F2.8 GM is slated to arrive mid-August and will sell for $ 3000.

Press release

Sony Electronics Grows Lens Line-up with Launch of 12-24mm G Master, the World’s Widest Full-frame Zoom with a Constant F2.8 Aperture

SAN DIEGO – July 7, 2020 – Sony Electronics Inc. today announced an exciting new addition to its full-frame lens line-up with the introduction of the FE 12-24mm F2.8 GM (model SEL1224GM) Large-aperture Ultra-wide Zoom lens. This compact and versatile lens is ideal for shooting landscapes, astrophotography and architecture while providing extra mobility for active sports shooters who want to capture ultra-wide perspectives. As part of Sony’s flagship G Master series lenses, users can be completely confident that it delivers outstanding image quality up to an ultra-wide 12mm angle of view with F2.8 constant aperture and beautiful bokeh effects.

The introduction of the FE 12-24mm F2.8 GM now extends the F2.8 range of Sony’s G Master series zoom lenses all the way from 12mm to 200mm[ii] and at 12mm, offers the world’s widest range of zoom at F2.8. At this focal length, it is possible to emphasize distance and create dynamic perspectives that are beyond the scope of the human eye, opening the door to new avenues of creative expression.

“We are excited to introduce the new FE 12-24mm F2.8 GM as the 57th lens in Sony’s E-mount line-up”, said Neal Manowitz, deputy president of Imaging Products and Solutions Americas, Sony Electronics. “It is important for us to continue to push boundaries in the industry to develop the best tools for our customers. By extending our range of G Master constant F2.8 zoom lenses out to 12mm, we are excited to see how these new innovations will help our customers create like never before.”

The FE 12-24mm F2.8 GM benefits from innovative construction that delivers outstanding corner-to-corner image quality throughout the entire zoom range. It features three precise XA (extreme aspherical) elements including the largest XA element ever made for an ? – Alpha brand lens. These XA elements, with an additional aspherical element, effectively suppress astigmatism, coma and field curvature right out to the image edges. Furthermore, three ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements plus two Super ED glass elements, powerfully control chromatic aberration and combine to deliver corner-to-corner clarity while minimizing color fringing.

An extremely effective floating focus mechanism divides the lens’s focus group into two independently controllable groups, ensuring both outstanding close-up performance and maximum sharpness at any distance. The two independently controlled groups help realize a constant 11” (28 cm) minimum focusing distance throughout the zoom range, and because it is an internal focus lens, its length remains constant, so its center of gravity varies very little and is always optimally balanced in the hand.

The signature bokeh effects of Sony’s G Master series lens are achieved through the fine tuning of the lens’s spherical aberration characteristics during both the design and manufacturing process. At the same time, the extremely high surface precision of the lens’s XA elements effectively suppresses spherical aberration and, in combination with a 9-blade circular aperture, further enhances its exquisite bokeh.

The FE 12-24mm F2.8 GM employs four original high-speed, high-thrust XD (extreme dynamic) Linear Motors to ensure that it is compatible with the speed performance of both current and future camera bodies. With two XD Linear Motors for each of the lens’s focus groups, autofocus is fast and precise. New control algorithms maximize the response of the system while achieving flawless synchronization between the two focus groups. Further benefits include extremely quiet operation with minimal vibration and lower power consumption.

A brand-new Nano AR Coating II that can be evenly applied to large lens elements or highly curved element surfaces has been used for the first time on the FE 12-24mm F2.8 GM. It suppresses internal reflections, minimizes flare and ghosting for clear, crisp imagery and despite the lens’s wide angle of view, Nano AR Coating II maintains high clarity and contrast throughout the entire image, even in difficult light.

Moviemaking
The constant F2.8 maximum aperture at all focal lengths ensures that exposure is stable when zooming. As a result, this means that shutter speed and ISO sensitivity can remain constant while shooting movies. The creative opportunities afforded by shooting movies at a 12mm angle of view with F2.8 constant aperture in full-frame are boundless, and when used on an APS-C or Super 35 camera, the wide end of the zoom range becomes equivalent to 18mm, providing a useful zoom range for moviemaking.

Professional Control
Weighing only 1.87 lbs (847 g), the FE 12-24mm F2.8 GM offers numerous features for full professional control of shots. These include a customizable focus-hold button, focus-mode switch, zooming ring and focusing ring that are positioned for easy operation while shooting. The Linear Response MF ensures that the focus ring responds directly to the most subtle adjustments when focusing manually so control feels immediate and precise. It is dust and moisture resistant[iii] and the front lens element features a fluorine coating that repels water, oil, and other contaminants, making it easier to wipe off any fingerprints from the lens surface. The rear filter holder accommodates standard sheet-type ND, color correction and other filters for expanded expressive capability. A cutting template for sheet filters is supplied.

Pricing and Availability
The FE 12-24mm F2.8 GM is available in in August 2020 for a suggested retail price of $ 2,999.99 USD and $ 3,999.99 CAD.

Zenit M full-frame rangefinder camera made in collaboration with Leica arrives in the US

18 Dec

The Zenit M full-frame rangefinder digital camera made in collaboration with Leica is now available to purchase in the United States. The rangefinder features a 24MP CMOS sensor and Leica M39 mount; it is being sold with a 35mm F1.0 Zenitar manual focus lens.

This rangefinder model first started shipping in Europe in late 2018, later arriving in Russia earlier this year. The Zenit M’s arrival in the US marks the latest expansion of this vintage brand camera, which was designed in Russia and produced in Wetzler, Germany.

The Zenit M is essentially a Leica M240 camera with the Zenit M logo, design changes and certain software-based differences, including support for only a few Zenit lenses. The model was first announced in 2016 by Russian factory Krasnogorsky Zavod and, after months of mystery, was finally unveiled in September 2018 as what is essentially a Leica camera.

A total of 500 Zenit M cameras are being put up for sale globally. Buyers in the US can get the camera as part of a kit that includes the 35mm F1.0 Zenitar lens, a case, a hardbound book and a collector’s card for $ 6,995. The silver version of the camera is available to purchase now; the black version will be available ‘soon.’

Capture One 20 photo editing software arrives with new and enhanced tools

05 Dec

Phase One has announced the launch of Capture One 20, the latest version of its photo editing software. Additions and enhancements brought in Capture One 20 are based on user feedback, according to Phase One, which says the latest version of its software brings a ‘highly intuitive and functional’ UI that is easier for new users to learn and use.

Capture One 20 brings both updated and new features, including a redesigned Basic Color Editor that now works on Layers, a new Crop tool that Phase One says is Capture One’s ‘most advanced’ crop tool to date, a new HDR tool that adds White and Black point sliders, a ‘re-engineered’ Noise Reduction tool, and new scrolling tools.

In addition, Capture One users can expect enhanced versions of the software’s appearance, interface, DNG support, copy and apply functions in Layers, and an entirely new ‘Select Next When’ option that makes it possible to automatically switch to the next image once a certain action has been performed (adding a color tag, etc).

Other enhancements include new toolbar text and icons, enhanced browser thumbnail resolution, improvements to the adjustments clipboard, and an enhanced White Balance Picker tool that has been re-engineered for what Phase One says is ‘much higher consistency.’ As expected, the updated software also brings new lens and camera support for models that include the Canon EOS 90D and M6 II, the Ricoh GR III, Nikon Z 50, and more.

Below is a feature overview of the newly-released Capture One 20:

Capture One 20 is available starting today with versions that limit support to camera models from Fujifilm and Sony (Capture One Pro Fujifilm 20 and Capture One Pro 20 for Sony, respectively). Customers have the choice to purchase Capture One 20 for $ 299 ($ 159 to upgrade from a previous version) or to sign up for a subscription to receive access to it for rates starting at $ 15/month. The Fujifilm and Sony versions of the software are slightly cheaper at $ 129 per license or $ 8/month.

ON1 Photo RAW 2020 public beta arrives with AI-powered tools and improved speeds

20 Sep

ON1 has taken the wraps off its upcoming ON1 Photo RAW 2020. The software arrived as a public beta today, introducing the first offering in ON1’s recently announced new line of creative products. Photo RAW 2020 is a layered editor, raw processor, and image organizer that ON1 claims offers ‘everything you need in one photography application.’

Photo RAW 2020 brings new AI-powered tools including AI Match, a feature that processes raw images to appear the way they looked ‘on the back of the camera,’ as well as AI Auto Tone, which brings a new algorithm that was trained using thousands of photos.

In addition to the new AI tools, Photo RAW 2020 brings numerous performance updates that enable the software to open raw files up to two times faster than before. The performance updates also resulted in smoother brushing, something that persists even on devices that feature integrated graphics cards.

Users can also expect improved noise reduction, new map view and timeline albums, several new filters (weather, color balance, channel mixer, and sun flare), plus a new print module, focus mask overlay, more than 100 new presets, SmugMug integration, and custom camera profiles made possible by a partnership with X-Rite.

ON1 says it will release a list of newly added camera and lens support soon. Photo RAW 2020 supports raw image files from more than 800 camera models, as well as expected formats like DNG, JPEG, TIF, PNG, PSD, and PSB.

Below is a sneak peek On1 shared earlier today:

The public beta is available to download now from ON1’s website. Photo RAW 2020 can be preordered at $ 79.99 USD for existing ON1 product owners and $ 99.99 USD for everyone else. The company is bundling a 100 pack of presets for a limited time as a preorder bonus. The product is scheduled to release for everyone by the end of October 2019.
