Tamron Announces First Mirrorless All-In-One f/2.8 Zoom

The post Tamron Announces First Mirrorless All-In-One f/2.8 Zoom appeared first on Digital Photography School. It was authored by Jaymes Dempsey.

Tamron f/2.8 zoom lens announced

Earlier this week, Tamron announced its brand new 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 lens designed for Sony mirrorless cameras.

In addition to its massive range, the lens boasts a maximum aperture of f/2.8 at its widest focal length, making it officially the first all-in-one zoom lens to begin at f/2.8.

While the lens ultimately tops out at f/5.6 at the 200mm end, the wide-angle f/2.8 maximum aperture offers low-light shooters the opportunity to work with a fast, lightweight, compact zoom, one that also features significant reach on the long end.

In terms of weight and dimensions:

The Tamron 28-200mm clocks in at just 20.3 oz (575 g), while measuring 4.6 in (117 mm). This positions the lens as a comprehensive option for travel photographers, landscape photographers, and more; just slip the Tamron 28-200mm plus a Sony camera in your backpack, and you’ll be ready for anything.

Tamron 28-200mm zoom

Of course, none of this matters if the lens can’t deliver on image quality, and all-in-one zooms are known for their lackluster optics, especially at focal length extremes.

While we can’t definitively comment on sharpness, Tamron promises “liberal use of special lens elements…to greatly suppress chromatic aberrations, making it possible to achieve high image quality from edge to edge.”

Tamron also claims to have “concentrated all its all-in-one zoom technologies into achieving optical performance that sets a new standard among existing all-in-one zoom lenses.”

While we’ll have to wait a few weeks to confirm Tamron’s claims, the company’s other all-in-one zooms have been mediocre-to-great. If Tamron has taken this one a step further, then the rewards could be great.

The new lens also offers:

  • An impressive minimum focusing distance of 7.5 in (0.19 m) on the wide end and 31.5 (0.8m) on the long end, making for a close-up magnification ratio of 1:3.8
  • A fast, quiet AF motor
  • Moisture resistance
  • A reasonable price of US$ 729

Assuming the optics are good, this lens will be a steal for almost any shooter, but especially photographers looking to reduce the size of their kit for travel, outdoors, or walkaround photography.

At the time of writing, the lens will launch on June 25, though Tamron warns of potential COVID-related delays.

So if you’re interested in an all-in-one zoom for Sony with tremendous low-light capabilities, great optical potential, and much more, check out the new Tamron 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 Di III RXD.

Now over to you:

What do you think of this new lens from Tamron? Do you expect it will separate itself from other all-in-one zooms in terms of optics? And if so, will you purchase it? Share your thoughts in the comments!

In-Depth Review

Galleries

These three the are the biggest features that Instaproofs provides. Whether you are a digital delivery photographer or focus more on prints, there are endless features that you can take advantage of to get you more sales.

Instaproofs Review: An All-In-One Platform to Sell Your Photography Online

The online galleries support high-resolution images up to 50MB per image making sure that you’re able to offer your clients the best image quality available for their images. You’re also able to upload smaller resolution images if you’re looking to present the images during in-person sales. This can save you storage space the monthly plan.

Instaproofs Review: An All-In-One Platform to Sell Your Photography Online
The dashboard will let you customize the views and windows. You can see right away how much storage space you have left, how many galleries are active, and the number of images you have uploaded.

The galleries also have the option of choosing the image you want to be featured for the entire gallery as well as category featured images which can be different. You’re also able to upload the HTML code for a video slideshow if you’ve created one – all to captivate your clients right from the start.

Instaproofs Review: An All-In-One Platform to Sell Your Photography Online
The star shows the images you have chosen as featured and will show as the cover for the gallery.

When setting up your galleries, you have all the options in the same window so that you can set up the purchase minimum, slideshow music, whether you want the photos to display mostly horizontal or vertical, choose a price list for the gallery, and categories.

Currently, they’ve added the option to upload to multiple categories simultaneously for faster uploads making it easier to organize and categorize the images for your clients.

Instaproofs Review: An All-In-One Platform to Sell Your Photography Online

Adding custom links and music to the slideshows is also a great way to engage your clients during the selling process. Another great plugin: Direct uploading from Aperture, Lightroom, or FTP applications.

Instaproofs Review: An All-In-One Platform to Sell Your Photography Online

Not into selling digitals? You don’t have to. The galleries offer the photographer to have a minimum purchase amount, offer only web-sized digitals or only watermarked digital images.

You have full control over how you want to set up each individual gallery. You can give your clients permission to hide images, download all, or none, and a customized link. You can also have guests who enter the link to only be able to purchase images and not download at all. Each gallery is personalized as much or as little as you want.

Instaproofs Review: An All-In-One Platform to Sell Your Photography Online

From the galleries, you’re able to create mobile apps that hold 50 images from a particular gallery. You can also make one without a pre-existing gallery, where the client can save the mobile app onto their smartphone and have 50 images to view and share on the go! Especially useful to do sneak peeks/previews.

Shopping cart and selling

Instaproofs’ motto is “Sell more prints” and that is exactly what they aim for. More than a digital delivery service, they make it really user friendly for photographers to set up price sheets, sales, coupons, and products to the storefront for clients to purchase.

Instaproofs Review: An All-In-One Platform to Sell Your Photography Online

You can also choose to create add-ons so that you can maximize the sale. Rather than just selling a print, you can also add on the frame and offer your clients more value for their purchases.

When creating the shopping cart, you can also use lab pricing and a certain markup percentage to make it easier to set pricing. This can be really useful for beginner photographers who are getting into selling products and don’t really know how to go about pricing their prints and products.

Instaproofs Review: An All-In-One Platform to Sell Your Photography Online

From the cart, you can activate whether you’ll want to sell prints in black and white and/or sepia. This is a preference and each photographer can set up the cart as they wish.

Instaproofs Review: An All-In-One Platform to Sell Your Photography Online

There are many features to the shopping cart that gives the photographer full control of what to sell, how many, bulk pricing, options for black and white or sepia, cropping to help clients crop properly, lab fulfillment, pricing sheets, discounts, sales, coupons, promotions, and much more.

Instaproofs Review: An All-In-One Platform to Sell Your Photography Online

It’s a complete selling platform for you and user friendly for your clients. You will need a Stripe account in order to activate the storefront in order to get paid.

These are the professional lab partners that offer print fulfillment through the online gallery.

Contracts and invoicing

Instaproofs have added contracts and invoicing to their services and allows photographers to create their own contracts or use a pre-made template.

Choose templates for weddings, portraits, model releases for both adults and minors, independent contractor agreement (freelance work or similar) or you can make your own.

Instaproofs Review: An All-In-One Platform to Sell Your Photography Online

Just fill in the fields and required information, then choose to save a draft or finalize and send it to your client for signature.

Instaproofs Review: An All-In-One Platform to Sell Your Photography Online

Right from the contracts window, you are also able to create an invoice for your client by filling in the information fields for the invoice.

You can also choose an online gallery for the invoice in the event that you’ve already made a gallery.

Choose to attach the contract to the invoice, add an auto-reminder, and save your invoices as templates for future use.

Instaproofs Review: An All-In-One Platform to Sell Your Photography Online

Reports

Another great feature for photographers is to get reports of what you’re selling, products most purchased, email deliveries, and much more. This can be really great to see how your business is doing year to year.

Instaproofs Review: An All-In-One Platform to Sell Your Photography Online

Pros and cons

The biggest pro for signing up with Instaproofs is the number of features it offers photographers all from the same platform. Meaning, you don’t have to use different services to send gallery invites, emails including cart and expiration reminders.

Instaproofs Review: An All-In-One Platform to Sell Your Photography Online

The service allows photographers to ultimately customize the entire interface from adding your logo to the galleries, custom links, custom products, and print options, add-ons, and pricing sheets.

Instaproofs also has a referral program that gives existing users the opportunity to get more storage (2gb per referral) when a photographer signs up and says you sent them. It’s a great incentive if you’re a satisfied customer.

Instaproofs Review: An All-In-One Platform to Sell Your Photography Online

The con may be the price and limited galleries in the free and basic options.

There is also a commission fee for the free option and limited cloud storage.

We’ve rounded other top services so you can compare them and determine which is best for your business.

Instaproofs Review: An All-In-One Platform to Sell Your Photography Online

Instaproofs leads in cloud storage in the bottom level monthly subscriptions but doesn’t offer an unlimited version for companies with a higher volume. Which is a big con if you’re a multi-photographer studio that needs unlimited galleries and storage space for high resolution selling and viewing.

Instaproofs Review: An All-In-One Platform to Sell Your Photography Online
Sharing to social media or via email is really quick and easy for your clients.

Also, it’s important to note that Instaproofs isn’t an online archiving site and so if you’re looking for a service that backs up your digital files, you might want to look elsewhere. It’s primarily for uploading client photos and selling photo products.

Conclusion

Instaproofs has a lot of features that aren’t just bells and whistles. Many of the top photographers like Jonathan Canlas, Laura Murray, and Abby Grace use Instaproofs for their own businesses.

Instaproofs Review: An All-In-One Platform to Sell Your Photography Online
The slideshow feature allows you to set music and wow clients.

Having an all-in-one platform for both product-based photographers and digital format photographers, with customization in all of their features, gives you a great advantage in generating more sales and offering a beautiful and easy to use interface for your clients to view, enjoy, share, and buy their images.

Instaproofs Review: An All-In-One Platform to Sell Your Photography Online

With a 14 day free trial, you can try it out yourself and see if it’s the right service for you and your photography business.

The Kanton DX35 concept is an all-in-one film development machine the size of a coffee maker

13 Jul

Developing film isn’t necessarily a difficult task. But it is time-consuming and, generally speaking, it tends to require a decent bit of space and equipment to get started. Industrial designer Thomas Müller is hoping to change that, with a clever device he calls the Kanton DX35.

This tabletop device is a ‘smart home solution to develop your colour as well as black and white films in both 35mm and 120 [film] without the need of a darkroom.’ The Kanton DX35 is little more than a concept right now, but Müller hints it could become more by asking consumers to sign up for more information when ‘further progress’ is made. Whatever stage of development it’s in, it’s quite the setup.

To load film, it’s simply a matter of adjusting the reel to fit your roll of 35mm or 120 film and slipping it back into the container. Once it’s in the container, it’ll automatically unwind the film in complete darkness. Once unwound, it’s a quick cut of the film with the integrated cutter, and you’re on your way to the next step.

Development is aided by a dial and screen that automatically heats up the chemicals to the correct temperature and lets you know when you need to switch out the chemicals, pending your development method of choice. Step by step, the Kanton DX35 guides you through the process of adding the required chemicals to container and automatically agitating the film inside the container to get an even development.

Once the film is developed and chemicals are back in their places, it’s simply a matter of giving it a rinse and removing the reel from the container. Below is a visual step-by-step guide provided by Müller:

Sure, this concept doesn’t account for all of the intricacies of developing film, but for a device that doesn’t take up much more space than a coffee maker, it looks pretty impressive.

To sign up for updates from Müller on the Kanton DX35, head on over to his product page and sign up. If he ever decides to bring it to life, you’ll be the first to know.

You’ll Never Want to Leave This All-in-One Bed Full of Gadgets & Storage

07 Sep

[ By SA Rogers in Design & Furniture & Decor. ]

Blow-up dolls and boyfriend-shaped body pillows may make you feel a little less lonely, but they can’t give you a massage – unlike this multifunctional bed that performs so many functions, you half-expect it to cook you breakfast in the morning. Sold by a variety of Asian retailers for roughly $ 600 USD, including SG Shop and English TaoBao, this slightly bonkers piece of furniture incorporates virtually everything you can imagine (reasonably) wanting to be built right into your bed, from USB chargers, speakers, power outlets and a pop-out laptop table to an actual built-in massage chair with multiple settings.

Lift up the mattress to find plenty of storage underneath for extra bedding and ubiquitous pillows. There’s also hidden storage in the bench at the foot of the bed, and shelves all along both sides. Optional features include leather upholstery instead of the default fabric, which comes in a multitude of colors, and even a freaking safe to hold your valuables.

If there’s one glaringly obvious feature this bed doesn’t have to offer, it’s a mattress long enough for the average American. The small size measures just 4’11” while the large size adds a foot. So if you’re larger of stature, this bed might not be for you – at least, not to sleep in. It would still make a pretty cool living room lounger. If you were designing your own all-in-one dream bed, what would you add? A mini fridge? A built-in coffee maker?

Inner Space: 14 Modular All-in-One Living Cubes to Organize Interiors

09 Feb

kammerspiel cube 1

No shelter is too small or too basic to accommodate a comfortable lifestyle when everything you need, from your bed and kitchen to walk-in closets and mini theaters, is contained in one compact, mobile, modular ‘living unit.’ Often fitted out for plumbing and boasting their own internet and sound systems, these rooms-within-rooms can instantly make warehouses and other typically uninhabitable spaces into cozy apartments or save an astounding amount of space when square footage is severely limited.

Kammerspiel Unit by Nils Holger Moormann

kammerspiel cube 2

kammerspiel cube 3

Designed for people living in micro apartments, Nils Holger Moormann’s ‘Kammerpsiel’ contains just about everything you need in an apartment, in one compact and highly efficient package. The bed is lofted above the walk-in closet, while important functions are located along the perimeter, like the couch, storage, desk, dining are and even a place to display and store your bike.

Cubitat by Urban Capital and Luca Nichetto

Measuring 10 by 10 by 10, the Cubitat by Luca Nichetto and urban Capital is designed to be a ‘plug and play’ living space containing a built-in kitchen, living room, bed, bathroom and closets. The idea is that you could move into virtually any kind of building and instantly make it inhabitable without the need for further renovations.

Living Cube by Ken Isaacs

The first designer to come up with this concept seems to have been Ken Isaacs, whose 1974 book ‘How to Build Your Own Living Structures’ still serves as a roadmap to modular room systems today. Isaacs reportedly came up with the idea when he was a poor Chicago student needing a place to live and work. The whole book is downloadable here.

Another all-in-one apartment system, the Hub by Rotterdam-based architects Kraaijvanger, contains everything you need to make a warehouse a comfortable place to live – even plumbing. It measures just a little more than 160 square feet, hooks up to existing water mains through an access point in the floor, and has its own internet, heating and sound system.

Not all modular living systems are cubes, though. The Wooden Mountain in the Volkshotel’s Edmund Suite packs just as much function into an amorphous wooden structure, including a wardrobe, double bed, shower, toilet, full-sized soaking tub and even a cactus garden. Photos by Arend Loerts.
