Nikon’s 70-200 F2.8 for Z-mount to ship in February

Nikon’s new Nikkor Z 70-200mm F2.8 VR S is the first full-frame tele-zoom for the company’s Z-mount. The lens has Vibration Reduction built-in – which works in tandem with the Z6 and Z7’s in-body IS system – and can reduce shake by up to 5 stops.

As with Nikon’s F-mount 70-200s, the Z-mount version has both internal focus and zoom. The company claims minimal focus breathing and also that this is a parfocal lens, keeping the subject in focus as you zoom. It has a total of 21 elements, including one SR (short wavelength refracting) to reduce longitudinal chromatic aberration, as well as 6 ED, 2 aspherical and 1 fluorite elements. It also features Nikon’s Nano Crystal and Arneo coatings to minimize both off-axis and on-axis flare, respectively. The 70-200 can focus down to 0.5m at its wide end and 1m at its telephoto end, with a maximum magnification of 0.2x. These short focus distances are achieved using two separately driven autofocus units.

The 70-200 F2.8 weighs in at 1.4kg (3.2lbs) and uses 77mm filters. A customizable control ring allows for quick adjustment of aperture or exposure compensation, and a digital display shows things like aperture and focus distance. As with other high-end Z-mount lenses, the 70-200 is weather-sealed.

The Nikkor Z 70-200 F2.8 VR S will be available in February for $ 2599.

Canon developing six new RF lenses, including ultra-compact 70-200 F2.8

Canon has announced the development of six RF lenses which are expected to be released at various points in 2019.

The most captivating has to be the RF 70-200 F2.8L IS USM. The lens is almost impossibly small, yet manages to be as fast as Canon’s EF model. The 70-200 will be stabilized, though we won’t find out how many stops of shake reduction it provides for some time, as Canon has not yet published specs for any of the upcoming lenses.

Canon will be offering two versions of its RF 85mm F1.2L USM: a ‘regular’ model and a ‘DS’ variant. DS stands for Defocus Smoothing, which Canon says ‘offers a combination of beautifully smooth defocused bokeh.’ While we don’t know exactly what that means yet, it seems likely that the DS model includes an Apodization element, of the kind we’ve seen before in ‘APD’ and ‘STF’ lenses from other manufacturers.

The dual model approach echoes Fujifilm’s decision to market two versions of its XF 56mm F1.2 – a standard model and an ‘APD’ variant optimized for bokeh.

Meanwhile, there are two fast zooms on the way: the RF 15-35mm F2.8L IS USM and the RF 24-70 F2.8L IS USM.

Lastly, there’s a versatile (but slower) travel zoom lens in the works too – the RF 24-240mm F4-6.3 IS USM.

New Lenses Under Development Cover a Range of Core Focal Lengths

MELVILLE, N.Y., February 13, 2019 – Continuing with the message of “optics at its core,” Canon U.S.A. Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced that its parent company, Canon Inc, is developing six new RF-series lenses, further displaying the company’s commitment to the EOS R full-frame mirrorless camera system. Canon’s new RF mount allows for fast, light, and high-performing optics with a large opening diameter and short back focus distance. Each new lens in development will help fulfill the needs of amateur and advanced amateurs to professional photographers and videographers, covering critical focal lengths. In 2019, Canon’s already well-established optical lens heritage will celebrate a production milestone of 140 million EF and RF lenses and the celebration starts with the development announcement of these six lenses[i].

The six new RF lenses under development include:

All six RF lenses under development are built around Canon’s new RF mount, which features a large 54mm diameter and shorter back focus distance than on current EOS DSLR cameras. In addition, the RF mount enhances communication and power transmission between the lens and camera body, which has helped Canon to achieve the world’s fastest autofocus speed for a full-frame mirrorless camera system[ii].

The details of the new Canon RF lenses under development are as follows:

The RF 85mm F1.2 L USM is a large aperture mid-telephoto prime lens. It offers excellent performance for advanced and professional portrait photographers and is a widely popular focal length and aperture speed combination for users.

The RF 85mm F1.2 L USM DS, with Defocus Smoothing lens technology, is a uniquely designed lens that offers a combination of beautifully smooth defocused bokeh. Featuring a super-fast F1.2 aperture, the lens will help produce breathtaking portraits that will surely stand out from the crowd.

The RF 24-70mm F2.8 L IS USM is a high-performance, standard zoom lens for professionals and photo enthusiasts alike – ideal for shooting portraits, landscapes, documentaries or weddings.

Panasonic launches 50mm F1.4, 70-200 F4 OIS and 24-105mm F4 Macro OIS full-frame lenses

Panasonic has launched a trio of Lumix S lenses alongside its S1 and S1R full-frame mirrorless cameras. The three new lenses are a 50mm F1.4 – Panasonic’s ‘reference lens’, a 70-200 F4 OIS and a versatile 24-105mm F4 OIS Macro, which will serve as the kit lens for both cameras.

The Lumix S Pro 50mm F1.4 features 13 elements – two aspherical and three ED – and an 11-blade aperture. Panasonic claims that one of the aspherical elements is among the largest ever created, with a diameter of over 40mm. The lens has two focus motors – linear and stepping – designed to operate with 480 fps sensor readout. Panasonic says that the lens has been designed for smooth exposure changes with minimal focus breathing for video capture.

The Lumix S Pro 70-200 F4 OIS’s stabilization works in conjunction with the S1/S1R’s in-body IS to provide up to 6.5 stops of shake reduction. It has 23 elements, including aspherical, UHR, UED and ED. It uses a linear motor with a 480 fps AF control. As with the 50mm F1.4, the 70-200 is weather-sealed, has a focus clutch and is designed to reduce focus breathing.

Finally, there’s the Lumix S 24-105mm F4 Macro OIS, which will serve as the kit lens for both the S1 and S1R. It too is stabilized, and has one ED, two aspherical ED, two aspherical and three ED elements. The 24-105 uses a linear motor, again with 480 fps AF control. The minimal focus distance on this general-purpose lens is 0.3m, with a maximum magnification of 0.5x.

All three lenses are dust and moisture-sealed, and the two ‘S Pro’ models include a focus clutch for quick switching between auto and manual focus.

The three new lenses will ship in early April. The 50mm F1.4 is priced at $ 2299, the 70-200 F4 at $ 1699 and the 24-105mm F4 at $ 1299. Buying the S1/S1R kit effectively lowers the price of the 24-105mm F4 to $ 899.

Newark, NJ (February 1, 2019) – Panasonic is proud to introduce three new interchangeable lenses based on the L-Mount system for the LUMIX S Series Full-frame Digital Single Lens Mirrorless Camera. Specially focusing on professional use, the LUMIX S Series pursues uncompromising photographic expression with its high-quality cameras and lenses.

The L-Mount is a lens mount for mirrorless cameras that was launched by Leica and is equally suitable for both the APS-C format and full-frame cameras. Leica Camera, Panasonic and Sigma are set to offer a user-friendly solution that will allow photographers to ‘mix and match’ any of the three manufacturers’ APS-C and full-frame cameras with any lens from each other’s product portfolios. The aim of the L-Mount Alliance is to provide customers with a diverse and future-proof range of products. The advantages are a large inner diameter of 51.6 mm that enables the realization of extremely fast lenses and extremely compact dimensions. LUMIX S PRO 50mm F1.4 (S-X50)

The LUMIX S PRO 50mm F1.4 is a large-aperture fixed focal length LUMIX S PRO lens that is the core of all LUMIX S Series lenses. Ensuring versatile use with its 50mm focal length and F1.4 high speed, the LUMIX S PRO 50mm F1.4 boasts stunningly high resolution and a descriptive performance from the center to the corners of the image despite its large aperture. It provides smooth defocus gradation from the focus peak to the neighboring area of the image. It also describes the point light sources in the background as impressive, beautiful bokeh. The optical performance of this LUMIX S PRO lens is outstandingly high to clear stringent LEICA standards.

Comprising 13 lenses in 11 groups, the use of 2 aspherical lenses and 3 ED (Extra-low Dispersion) lenses effectively suppresses both axial chromatic aberration and chromatic aberration of magnification. Astigmatism is also corrected with those aspherical lenses, achieving high resolving performance.

A double focus system combining a linear motor and stepping motor achieves sensor drive at a maximum speed of 480 fps. It realizes fast, high-precision AF to ensure that you will never miss a photo opportunity. Adoption of a focus clutch mechanism enables instant AF/MF switching and accurate manual focusing. The LUMIX S PRO 50mm F1.4 also excels in video recording performance with a mechanism that suppresses focus breathing, which was a fatal problem of all interchangeable lenses designed for still image photography.

The refined design of the LUMIX S Series provides high operability as a tool for professionals. The rugged dust/splash-resistant* design withstand use under harsh conditions even in 10 degrees below zero for high mobility. The filter diameter is 77mm, with an 11-blade circular aperture diaphragm.

Lensrentals: Tamron 70-200 F2.8 G2’s resolution is excellent

Roger Cicala over at LensRentals has put Tamron’s new SP 70-200mm F2.8 Di VC USD G2 lens to the test. 

Cicala notes that on its own, the Tamron is impressively sharp all the way to the edges at its wide end, and even better in the middle of its focal range. Sharpness drops a bit at full telephoto, but Cicala still says the 70-200 ‘puts in a very good performance.’

The Tamron SP 70-200 F2.8 G2 impresses at its wide end of 70mm.

The Tamron’s performance is comparable to Canon’s 70-200 F2.8L II, though a bit softer at the wide end. When put up against what Cicala calls ‘the best 70-200 zoom on the planet’ – the Nikon F2.8 FL ED VR – the Tamron struggles to keep up, though the gap narrows at 200mm.

Nikon has released the latest iteration of its workhorse 70-200mm F2.8 lens. The AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm F2.8E FL ED VR, as it is known, has a new optical design, improved Vibration Reduction as well as an electromagnetic diaphragm.

The lens has a total of 22 elements, with 6 ED, 1 fluorite and 1 high refractive index element. A Nano Crystal Coat reduces flare and ghosting while fluorine coatings on the front and rear class helps prevent smudging. Vibration Reduction has been improved, now reducing shake by 4 stops (vs 3.5). The electromagnetic diaphragm allows for responsive adjustment and the ability to adjust the aperture in live view and movie mode on all camera bodies.

You’ll be able to pick up this 1.4 kg (3 lb) beast next month for $ 2799.95.

A video review of my new lens, the Nikon 70-200 2.8 VR and Nikon’s 2x teleconverter. This lens was purchased for my portraiture work but today I took it to a country park to test it out as a setup for wildlife photography to play with the teleconverter. The lens is fantastically sharp and I try to cover all the main points about this lens that make it worth the money it costs. A very good lens for all kinds of work.
