The Collect app brings 360-degree editing to your mobile device

13 Oct

With 360-degree video capture becoming more popular and affordable there is also an increased demand for 360-degree video editing applications. The Collect app is now a new option that aims to make editing 360-degree videos as easy as possible.

The app allows you to transform 360-degree into a more easily digestible format by transforming it into directed traditional videos and guiding the viewer’s attention through smooth cinematic camera transitions. This is done by adding points of interest and sharing the final videos to social media where they can be watched just like any normal clip.

The app can frame 360-degree footage into different aspect ratios and export clips with up to 4k resolution. The app is also capable of creating so-called “tiny planet” effects and blurring away a selfie-stick that might have been used during capture.

In addition you can combine and trim clips and and create slow/fast motion video as well as add music, filters and stickers. Specific 360-degree specific editing features include horizon-fix and point of view modification.

For more information watch the video below or visit the Collect website. A beta version of the app is now available to download free from Google Play. iPhone users can sign up on the Collect website to be included in the list of alpha users.

Insta 360 launches ONE X 360-degree 5.7K action camera

10 Oct

Insta360 today launched the ONE X, a 5.7K 360-degree action camera that’s compatible with Android and iOS mobile devices.

The new model is capable of recording spherical video at 5.7K resolution and 30 frames per second. For smooth motion in action videos or slow-motion effects you can also opt to record 4K footage at 50fps or 3K video at 100fps. In photo mode the camera captures 18MP still images.

OnePlus claims the new camera delivers “gimbal-like” stabilization without the gimbal. To achieve this the ONE X uses an upgraded version of Insta360’s FlowState stabilization algorithm which constantly analyzes movement in all directions.

Using the dedicated editing app, video can be reframed and re-edited to highlight the best elements of a scene and create cinematic clips that would be much more difficult to achieve with conventional cameras. In addition the new TimeShift feature lets users adjust the speed of different parts of a clip to put the focus on key moments, using either slow-motion or hyperlapse effects.

Insta360 says the ability to automatically remove a selfie stick from the footage in the app in combination with the company’s customized 10-foot selfie stick allows for the capture of drone-like footage without a drone. Thanks to its rugged construction the camera can even be thrown around when snapped into the Insta360 Drifter camera dart, allowing for very unusual effects.

The ONE X connects to mobile devices via WiFi, providing real-time image preview and control. The same connection can be used to transfer footage for editing but you also have the option to use a USB cable.

ISO, exposure compensation, white balance and shutter speed are user adjustable and optional accessories include a rugged case, an underwater case and a GPS Smart Remote.

The Insta360 ONE X can be pre-ordered on the Insta360 website and at retailers globally now and is priced at $ 399.95. Shipping starts on October 17. For more information and some quite impressive sample footage have a look at the video below.

Insta360 ONE X Redefines the Action Camera with 5.7K Video, Impossible Stabilization, Cinematic Slow-Mo

The future of the action camera is here. Insta360 today launched the ONE X, a 5.7K camera that uses 360° capture, groundbreaking stabilization and cinematic slow-mo to radically expand what’s possible with a camera.

Compatible with both iOS and Android, the ONE X is available to order today at Insta360.com, with shipments beginning Oct. 17.

Insta360 ONE X – The Future Of The Action Camera:

A new kind of camera.

The ONE X is more than a 360-degree shooter. It’s a new kind of camera that uses 360 to give users more freedom and more creative possibilities – both during and after capture.

Combining an unlimited field of view with gimbal-level stabilization and new high-FPS shooting modes, the ONE X unlocks the ability to control time and perspective in ways that make it feel more like a fleet of cameras than a single device.

Look sharp.

Shooting in every direction and making it all look good, requires some serious resolution.

That’s why the ONE X records at a best-in-class 5.7K (30 FPS). For dynamic scenes, new 50 FPS (4K) and 100 FPS (3K) shooting modes keep action super-smooth and let you slow the action down to highlight key moments.

18 MP photos show vivid detail, while an increased pixel size offers superior image quality and low-light performance.

Like a gimbal. Without the gimbal.

The ONE X uses the upgraded FlowState stabilization algorithm, analyzing movement in all directions to achieve a level of stabilization never before possible with a single device.

FlowState lets users capture impossibly smooth video with no accessories needed. Mount the ONE X anywhere – from a helmet to a selfie stick to a kayak – and footage comes out looking like it’s been professionally stabilized.

Shoot first, point later.

The magic of 360 is that it lets you choose the best way to frame an experience after it’s over – there’s no need to point your camera, and you’ll never miss a shot.

Using the ONE X’s simple editing app, users can easily reframe and re-edit the best parts of a scene, creating cinematic clips that would never be possible with a traditional camera.

Own the moment.

The ONE X’s new TimeShift feature lets users adjust the speed of different parts of a clip on a whim. Users can highlight key moments with cinematic slow-mo, or speed things up with a stabilized hyperlapse – the app always keeps playback smooth.

Combine TimeShift with the freedom to frame the shot in any direction, and the possibilities are endless. Users have total control over both time and perspective in their edits.

A drone without the noise.

Using the ONE X app, users can automatically remove a selfie stick from their scenes, leaving the ONE X apparently suspended in mid-air.

The result is the ability to shoot aerial angles without a drone. Pairing the ONE X with Insta360’s customized 10-foot (!) selfie stick leads to stunning possibilities.

Bullet Time. In 3K.

The Insta360 ONE introduced the unique Bullet Time shot, an orbiting perspective that puts a user at the center of an epic slow-mo shot. The ONE X takes this concept to the next level with a wider field of view and a sharper 3K resolution.

Throw them for a loop.

The ONE X is made to throw around. Seriously.

Creators can snap it into the new Insta360 Drifter camera dart, and send it soaring.

The resulting Drift Shots — airborne slow-mo shots enhanced by the full freedom of 360 — unlock impossible angles and create a mind-blowing effect.

High-speed WiFi for preview and transfer.

Users can connect to the ONE X via super-fast 5.8 GHz WiFi, letting them conveniently preview and control their shots in real time.

When they’re ready to transfer footage back to their phone for editing and sharing, they can quickly send it back over WiFi or connect directly with a transfer cable (Lightning, USB Type-C and Micro-USB cables come standard with the ONE X).

Staying power.

The ONE X has a removable 1200 mAh battery, ensuring that creators will stay powered up even when they’re far afield.

Natural lighting. In every direction.

Users can manually tweak image settings — including ISO, exposure value, white balance and shutter speed — to dial in the perfect shot.

The ONE X is also ready for HDR photos, timelapses, hyperlapses, interval shooting and timed shots.

Ready for the elements.

Two rugged case options for the ONE X mean it’s ready to go anywhere.

The Venture Case is a tough shell designed for above-water shooting, which offers splash protection and waterproofing to 5 meters.

The Dive Case is built to breach the depths. Specialized dome lenses allow for underwater 360 shooting — with a clean stitch – down to 30 meters.

Track your trek.

The optional GPS Smart Remote lets users control the ONE X, while automatically recording GPS data for video and photos.

This data can be used to easily upload video and photos to Google Maps Street View, and to add a customizable journey-tracking dashboard to video clips – overlaying speed, direction, elevation, location and route info.

Order now.

The Insta360 ONE X is priced at $ 399.95 USD and available to order now via Insta360.com and select retailers worldwide, including B&H Photo Video. Shipments begin Oct. 17.

The Insta360 Pro 2 is an 8K 3D 360-degree camera

22 Aug

Insta360 is probably best known for its smartphone 360-degree cameras, but the company is also very active in the professional space. Today it underlined its ambitions in the market for professional 360-degree imaging equipment by launching the Insta360 Pro 2, a six-lens 8K 3D professional VR camera.

The Insta360 Pro 2 uses six cameras to capture a scene, fusing the image data into two 8K photos or videos to create 3D VR image output. Available shooting modes include 8K 3D at 30 fps, 8K monoscopic at 60 fps, 6K 3D at 60 fps, and 4K 3D at 120 fps.

In-camera HDR allows for capturing highlight and shadow detail, even in difficult lighting situations, and i-Log mode offers flexibility in post-production coloring. The camera also features Insta360’s FlowState stabilization. The software-based system uses data from a gyroscope and the company says it offers gimbal-like performance, doing away with the need for bulky stabilizing gear that would possibly be visible in the footage.

For monitoring the Pro 2 comes with a 360-degree live monitoring system that, according to Insta360, offers a high-definition, low-latency video stream that is optimized for long-distance previewing. Thanks to a transmitter and receiver, the camera can be controlled and footage previewed from a distance of roughly 300 meters ground-to-ground, and 1 kilometer ground-to-air.

In addition the camera features four built-in mics for 360 audio, a pair of USB and 3.5 mm audio inputs, and six MicroSD card slots for recording at the maximum possible bit rate. A seventh SD card is reserved for recording stabilization data and low-res proxy files that can be used for editing in Adobe Premiere Pro.

The Insta360 Pro 2 can now be preordered at the Insta360 Store and other retailers for $ 4999.95 USD. The package includes the Farsight transmitter system and an additional battery. Shipping is scheduled for September. Sample footage can be viewed on the Insta360 Youtube channel.

Press Release:

Insta360 Pro 2 Launches with 8K 3D, FlowState Stabilization, Simplified VR Workflow

Insta360 today launched the Insta360 Pro 2, a groundbreaking six-lens professional VR camera. Ready to shoot 8K-per-eye 3D 360 video, the Pro 2 innovates the entire professional VR production workflow – offering effortless FlowState stabilization, long-range live monitoring, simplified post-production in partnership with Adobe, and a new technology that delivers 8K VR to viewers regardless of whether they have high-end playback devices.

Introducing the Insta360 Pro 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wjM3wS68cYo

Every Detail. From Every Angle.

The Insta360 Pro 2 uses six cameras to capture every angle of a scene at once. The resulting videos or photos are then fused into two 8K 360 images, one per eye, to create immersive, beautifully detailed 3D VR.

Available shooting modes include 8K 3D at 30 FPS, 8K monoscopic at 60 FPS, 6K 3D at 60 FPS, and 4K 3D at 120 FPS, among others. New in-camera HDR keeps lighting natural even when it varies in every direction, and i-Log mode is optimized for maximum flexibility in post-production coloring.

Make Your Move

The Pro 2 features Insta360’s proprietary FlowState stabilization, bringing a high-quality in-camera stabilization system to professional VR for the first time ever. Until now, VR creators have faced a grim choice: Make their audience sick with poorly stabilized footage, or use bulky stabilizing gear that would show up in scene and create a post-production headache.

FlowState solves this, achieving gimbal-level, pro-quality stabilization with no gear necessary. The Pro 2 uses an ultra-precise gyroscope that tracks motion on nine axes, and then – when paired with Insta360’s software innovations – allows creators to stabilize their footage down to a hair, fully automatically.

The dynamic, moving shots that filmmakers rely on to tell good stories are now possible in VR, along with a new language of dynamic 360 shots waiting to be created.

Action at a Distance

VR creators struggle with a fundamental challenge of the medium. How do you direct a shot when you can’t be on-set? The common solution – Wi-Fi monitoring – is notorious for being unreliable, short-range and prone to delay and interference.

The Pro 2 comes paired with all-new Farsight technology, a 360° live monitoring system that offers a high-definition, low-latency video stream that’s optimized for long-distance previewing.

With a transmitter and receiver, creators can effortlessly direct and control their scene from a distance of roughly 300 meters ground-to-ground, and 1 kilometer ground-to-air. Transmitting at 5.18Ghz, the Farsight uses smart channel switching to ensure it always cuts through the noise.

“No-Stitch” Editing in Adobe Premiere Pro

The Pro 2 is tailored for convenient stitching and editing using Insta360’s integrated Adobe Premiere Pro workflow. Every time the Pro 2 captures a video, it automatically saves a low-res proxy version in addition to the full-quality footage.

All a creator needs to do when they finish a shoot is directly import their footage into Adobe Premiere Pro. The proxy files will be automatically recognized and stitched instantly to let creators preview their final project.

This proxy version can be used to edit the project as usual. Then, when users are ready to export, Insta360’s algorithm will take over and stitch together exactly the footage they used in the final project, at full quality. There’s no wasted time, processing power, or effort. Creators stitch only what they use.

Ready for Anything

The Pro 2 weighs in at a handy 3.42 pounds (including a battery and antennae), making it easy to carry on remote shoots or send up on a drone, and its hot-swap battery dock ensures that it stays powered-up out in the field.

It sports four built-in mics for 360 audio, plus a pair of USB and 3.5 mm audio inputs on its top and bottom – allowing creators to add a custom audio setup or other add-ons as their shoots demand.

Six MicroSD card slots, one per each camera, allow the Pro 2 to record at the maximum possible bitrate, ensuring optimal image quality and post-production flexibility. A seventh Full SD card captures stabilization data and low-res proxy files optimized for editing in Adobe Premiere Pro.

Clear as Crystal

There’s a drawback to creating a beautiful, high-res VR project: You have to figure out how to deliver it to an audience — most of whom are going to be using either a smartphone or a popular headset like the Oculus Go or Samsung Gear VR, both of which max out at 4K.

Using Insta360’s proprietary CrystalView technology, Pro 2 content can be quickly converted into a format that’s ready to play back – at full 8K quality – on any mainstream smartphone or headset. Insta360’s free playback apps (such as Insta360 Moment) will dynamically render these files, displaying in full quality the exact segment of a scene that a user is looking at.

Live In the Moment. But Capture It.

The Insta360 supports 360 live-streaming at 4K resolution — in both 3D and monoscopic formats. The best part: Creators can save full-quality 8K footage at the same time that they broadcast in 4K, giving them the flexibility to turn their live recording into a polished edit later on.

Perfect Sense of Direction

The Insta360 Pro 2 sports a built-in GPS module, enhanced with a top-mounted antenna to improve signal strength. Creators can automatically append GPS data to their captures, allowing for easy contributions to Google Maps Street View and other precision-mapping projects.

Tools for Any Job

Insta360 Pro 2 customers will also have access to some of the premiere post-production tools in the VR industry. Included in the purchase of the Pro 2 is a 3-month license for Mistika VR Professional Edition ($ 236 USD value), offering customizable stitching controls, integrated with Insta360’s official stitching libraries. Also included is a 3-month license for Blend Media’s 360 Stories Pro software ($ 745 USD value), letting users easily create and publish virtual tours and other interactive 360 experiences.

Preorder Open

Preorders for the Insta360 Pro 2 are open now via Insta360 Store, B&H Photo Video and select retailers worldwide. It’s priced at $ 4999.95 USD, and includes the Farsight transmitter system, plus one battery. Cameras are set to ship in September.

PanoClip is a 360-degree smartphone lens

06 Jun

If you’ve been toying with the idea of trying 360-degree imaging but are reluctant to spend large amounts of money on specialist equipment, the newly announced $ 50 PanoClip might be worth a good look.

The PanoClip snaps onto a smartphone and lets you capture 360-degree photos by combining images from the device’s front and rear cameras. The latter are aligned with the PanoClip’s built-in super-wide-angle lenses and image output from both cameras is stitched in real-time in the PanoClip companion app.

The app also allows you to create a “Tiny Planet” effect and can convert 360-degree images into short video clips that showcase the scene in every direction. A number of filter effects are available as well and sharing options include Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, Facebook and other social platforms.

PanoClip looks like a clever idea. Smartphones already have front and rear cameras, so there isn’t really a need for 360-degree clip-on cameras to come with their own sensors and lens combos. Wide angle conversion lenses for the built-in cameras in the phone are enough and reduce cost. What’s the effect on image quality? We don’t know yet but we hope to get a test unit in our hands sometime soon.

PanoClip can now be ordered at PanoClip.com for $ 49.99 in two body configurations. The full version can be used with screen protectors and thin protective cases. The PanoClip Lite does not work with any any protective gear. Both are compatible with the iPhones 6/Plus, 6s/Plus, 7/Plus, 8/Plus and X. The PanoClip team is also working on a version for Android devices.

Press Release:

PanoClip Lets You Shoot 360° and ‘Tiny Planets’ from Your Phone for $ 49.99

The groundbreaking PanoClip launched today, letting anyone effortlessly take 360° photos and “Tiny Planet” shots straight from their phone. Using a cleverly designed dual-lens system, PanoClip snaps instantly onto a smartphone, and then creates a seamless 360° photo by combining images from the front and rear cameras.

Available today to iPhone users for $ 49.99 USD, PanoClip is the first device of its kind. It pairs perfectly with the cameras people use most – their phones – and makes 360° capture easier than ever before. An Android version will be available soon.

Introducing PanoClip: https://youtu.be/4hRdKWWExvA

How It Works

Traditional 360° cameras use two or more cameras to capture all angles of a scene, before stitching them together into a single image. PanoClip works on the same principle, but thanks to some ingenious tech, it achieves the same result with the two cameras that are likely already in your pocket.

Using PanoClip could not be simpler. Snapping it onto the top of a phone will align its super-wide-angle lenses with the phone’s front and rear cameras. Then, all that’s left to do is open up the companion app and start taking 360° snapshots.

PanoClip users will never miss a detail, and they’ll easily capture vibrant, dynamic scenes with action in every direction, such as music festivals or parties. When users want to focus on a particular part of the action, the screenshot feature lets them re-frame the best angles.

Sharing is effortless, with integrated publishing options for Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, Facebook and every popular social platform.

Karen Cheng introducing the PanoClip: https://youtu.be/3dPu4_pm1aM

Your Whole World… But Tinier

Along with capturing immersive 360° scenes that can be explored with a simple finger swipe, PanoClip also unlocks a world of creative possibilities for traditional “flat” pictures, such as the unique Tiny Planet effect.

Tiny Planet shots roll an entire 360° view into a traditional rectangular or square frame, allowing creators to get mind-bending effects that show the world in an all-new way.

How To Make a Tiny Planet (Karen Cheng Tutorial): https://youtu.be/fQ-Z8IC2IR4

Spin View, SkyWarp and Filter Effects

The PanoClip’s Spin View feature lets users take advantage of the benefits of 360° photos on any social media platform – even those that don’t natively support 360° content.

Spin View converts 360° snapshots into short, dynamic video clips that showcase the scene in every direction and bend it into eye-catching shapes.

Plus, users can apply the new SkyWarp effect to add a stunning twist to these video clips. For shots taken outdoors, the PanoClip app will automatically detect the horizon, and then swap out the sky with a variety of preset skyscapes that shift and flow in time with a music clip. It’s trippy, fun and will make your friends think you’ve got crazy editing skills.

The PanoClip app also offers a full range of colorful filters, and a variety of stickers to add a creative touch to any 360° scene.

PanoClip is available now at PanoClip.com. Two body configurations, a full and a Lite version, together offer compatibility for iPhone 6/Plus, 6s/Plus, 7/Plus, 8/Plus and X. An Android version is also on the way.

Facebook Messenger adds 360-degree photo and HD video support

04 Apr

Facebook just released an update that brings high-definition video and 360-degree panoramic photo support to Messenger. The update follows the high-res photo support Facebook added to Messenger in November 2017, expanding the quality and type of content that users can privately share with each other.

For 360-degree photos, users capture the panoramic content using their phone’s camera app or a third-party app, then share the panorama in Messenger like any other photo. The app automatically processes the panorama, converting it into an immersive 360-degree image that recipients can ‘explore’ by either moving their phone around or tapping and dragging the photo. Panoramic photos feature a compass icon in their upper right-hand side.

High-definition video sharing, meanwhile, supports the sharing of 720p videos from both the Camera Roll and a user’s newsfeed. To distinguish these videos from standard definition videos, Messenger now shows an HD or SD marker with the content.

360-degree photos are now available to all Messenger users on Android and iOS. HD video support is only available in the following countries:

  • Australia
  • Belgium
  • Canada
  • Denmark
  • Finland
  • France
  • Hong Kong
  • Japan
  • Netherlands
  • Norway
  • Romania
  • Singapore
  • South Korea
  • Sweden
  • Switzerland
  • Taiwan

In addition to that video spec, the Fusion uses its two lenses to shoot 18MP spherical photos, captures 360° sound, is waterproof to 16feet (5 meters) without any external case, and features ‘gimbal-like stabilization’ that is achieved using the built-in accelerometer, gyroscope, and compass. Additional features include time lapse video and photo modes, night lapse and burst modes, voice control in 10 languages, and built-in GPS, WiFi and Bluetooth.

Here are a few video breakdowns of the different features built into the camera, like that gimbal-like stabilization and something called ‘OverCapture’:

The GoPro Fusion is already up for pre-order on the GoPro website. It will cost you $ 700 and GoPro plans to ship the Fusion later this month. Click here to find out more or pre-order yours now.

Panono no more: 360-degree camera maker sold after ‘amazing but also exhausting journey’

05 Jul
Jonas Pfeil demonstrates the size and design differences between the working prototype Panono camera (right) and the design model of the final production unit (left). In a letter to backers he has confirmed that the company is to be sold, after only delivering around 400 cameras.

It’s official: Panono, maker of an innovative 360-degree camera, is to be sold after only managing to deliver around 400 cameras to its backers. The company filed for bankrupcy in May, but in a letter to backers, co-founder Jonas Pfeil has confirmed that the sale of Panono’s assets is expected to be finalized very soon.

As he explains, ‘assets’ in this context means ‘inventory, software, the rights to the hardware, almost all employee contracts, IP rights etc., […] but not the obligations towards external parties’. External parties like the Indiegogo backers that funded the Panono camera. In other words: if you backed Panono and you didn’t get your camera yet, you’re officially out of luck.

Thanking backers for their support and understanding, Pfeil called the experience ‘an amazing but also exhausting journey’. He stressed that, as shareholders, ‘the [outgoing] founders will […] not profit from this sale, as the money will be used by the insolvency administrator to pay outstanding invoices and other debt first.’

Meanwhile, there’s some good news for the 400 or so backers that did get their cameras – after some initial uncertainty, it seems that the cloud service supporting the device will continue to be maintained.
