www.Berger-Bros.com Learn how to fine tune your camera’s metering. The camera doe NOT behave like your eye. The camera needs YOU to tell IT what to do. Every camera has a built in default metering mode, which is the way the camera sees the available light, and adjusts to that light. Yvonne Berger, an instructor with Berger Bros Camera in Amityville and Syosset Long Island, New York explains various metering modes, such as matrix and evaluative metering, center weight meter spot metering She explains when to use each type of metering depending on what type of photograph you are taking.

If I was to shoot the lighthouse but I only had it on center weight metering and not spot, would I be able to simulate the spot metering by first focusing in the center, prefocus and shift over a little to compose the shot? I do that now and I think it works ok but maybe this would be totally wrong. I know for close objects, this could affect focus but I guess for distant objects, its less an issue?

With all due respect, you’re very pretty. I’ve been experimenting with spot metering and I’ve been training my eye to find “middle gray” on my frame so I can get the best exposure without worrying about exposure comp. The way I do it is, I compose my shot then try to make a decision what part of the scene would be closest to “middle gray” and I point the center of my viewfinder to that spot and lock my exposure then recompose my shot and take the photo. Is that the correct way of doing it?
